Boy, Doyle and Phyllis started young.  He's 86 and she's 85.  Must've gotten married in high school.  More power to a teen-age romance lasting this long.

I think that Jean Ivey, “Class of 60” and Gary Culley, “Class of 59” got married while Jean was still going to high school.

Thank you for the update and correction Joann. I went back into my Freshman year book and found Ina. She had written in my year book. I have many fond memories of the Culleys.

Gary and Larry once made a fort in a big clump of poison oak bushes...Larry's head swelled up the size of a bucket and almost died.

Honored were, from left, John and Patty Gerald, Matt Van Peursem, Carol Conley, Marcelina Sandoval and representing the Schools Foundation Tim Simmons, Julie Mast and Leila Stone.

Woodland honors those who’ve made a difference

Those nominated were selected based on their “significant contributions to the community” such as community leadership, “demonstrated, selfless service to the community,” “dependability in completing assignments/projects,” and an “interest in varied activities.” Only volunteers are recognized at the ceremony. Not considered are others who promote the community as part of their business or jobs.

Carol Knight “Conley,” according to Gary Traynham, “embodies the spirit of community and volunteerism.” Traynham said Conley has spent 20 years helping youth at Juvenile Hall, where she provides comfort if needed along with counseling. She also volunteers at the Woodland Opera House, Woodland Memorial Hospital and Hospital Auxiliary, along with the cold-weather homeless shelter operated by the city.

Finally, Conley is a licensed daycare provider, a docent for the Yolo County History Museum and heads up Sunday School at the United Methodist Church and is also a representative on the Sacramento United Methodist Church Council. She has organized a number of Easter Egg Hunts for the church.

Thank you Robert for posting the article about the Volunteers Honored.  This was so great to read, all those hard workers giving to others.  What an honor to see the picture and read about their works.

Vern,  Just received word from Jean Ivey's brother, Lee, who's in my class, that Jean first got married in 1962 to Bob Gibson.  She has been married 4 times but is currently single.

Thank you for the update Don. I love the way we are able to keep track of former friends and classmates through the use of this wonderful site.

Did you know that the Cullys moved into the home out by Laugenour that Phil Rosasco used to live in before his family moved into their home in Woodland over by you?

Don Murdoch (1962)

The Rosascos and my parents moved into those homes in 1950 just prior to the 1st grade.   And as you know, I lived next door to your sister-in-law for many, many years.

I was fortunate enough to be on Coach Pinkston's first Varsity team in 1964. The team didn't fair too well that year but was the start of an uprise in the basketball program at Woodland High.  The next year we had the first winning team in I don't know how many years.  It may have been even better if John Didion (RIP) could have played as we had good outside play with the likes of Steve Waldeck (RIP), Gary Eagleton, Dale Metcalf, and myself.  Unfortunately John came down with Mono and missed the entire season-he would have really helped inside on the boards. As is the case with a lot of coaches-you don't really appreciate them as much as you should until later.  Coach Pinkston's knowledge of the game was great-he gave me a chance to play whereas under the previous coaches I doubt that would have happened.  I thank you Coach Pinkston and happy anniversary!

Pinkie was also a great umpire.  He umpired my games in Babe Ruth League and slo-pitch softball.  Probably the second best umpire behind the late great Dick McGriff.  Who were some of the good umpires of that era?  Who was the worst umpire of the 60s and 70s?  My answer to follow.

06/03/19 10:52 PM #5385

Doyle Phillips (1961)

Don, speaking of umpires do you remember the umpire that umpired our Pony and Babe Ruth Tournaments in the late 50's who was in the Giants organization who was also a postal worker in Sacramento. I am thinking his name was Lou. He umpired a few of the games and I remember either Max or Buddy Baer umpired one of our tournaments. I was a little 5' 4" catcher and he was a giant.

Don Murdoch (1962)

Doyle,  You're thinking of Lou Brinson. He was a postal worker in Woodland and managed the Little League Giants in 1953-54. He lived on 4th St. just south of Pendegast St. He also managed Marash's Giants in the Sacramento City Baseball League.. Our uniforms were old SF Giant uniforms. I played for him one year. After he retired from the postoffice, he went to work for the SF Giants as a clubhouse attendant and asst. equipment manager.  He was tragicallty killed by a motorist while  crossing the street.  I don't recall the year.  He was a great guy who loved baseball and the Giants.

To all you WHS, Class of 1965, tomorrow, June 11th, 2019 is the 54th year anniversary of our graduation  Unfortunately, my parents pulled me out of WHS the last 1/4 of my junior year, and we moved to Placerville, CA.  More unfortunately, my graduation was also June 11th  I didn't get to see my long-time friends graduate, but my friend, Sandi Wasemiller Vasquez, purchased an extra year book, and had all my friends sign it.

As misfortune would have it ALL the reunions up until last year, were on the same night; just like graduation night.

I kept in touch with some friends.  Then, in 2005, I returned to Woodland, anf married my high school sweetheart, Jerry Hartwig.  We married, and remained together til his death in November, 2016.

I have remained here, living in the Hartwig family home.  I stay in touch with friends, on F/B.

Linda Faris Walfridson      RIP

Thank you Joan for keeping us informed of our dear classmate Linda. Our sincere condolences go out to Gus and other family members.

This is Linda's 1960 WHS class photo. At the bottom of her class photo, the words that were written describe her so perfectly.

There was no mention of Bob Faris in Joan's message regarding Linda's obituary.  Anyone know his status?

Sad news; Ruth and Bob Moeller, parents of Bob Jr, class of '69, were in a terrible auto accident June 19th, a day shy of their 70th wedding anniversary.  Ruth did not survive, and Bob is in intensive care at UC Medical Center with major injuries.  Please keep the family in your thoughts and prayers.
