Janice Bell (Killian) (1966)

I had PE during 1st period, then had a hard time staying awake during 2nd period, just wanted to take a nap. And, yes, those gym bloomers looked like something from the 1920s. I really like the teachers and the after school activities, especially the aquaquade one year. We got to perform our routines for friends and parents. My group performed with music, can't remember the name of the song, just The Percolator song. Great memories.

I loved all those PE classes and was active in all GAA after school activities as well. Earned enough points to get my letter as a junior. Didn't mind the gym clothes but hated the shower situation.

P.E. was the most negative experience during my four years of high school.  All of the teachers, with the exception of Mrs. Ling in my freshman year, contributed to a feeling of failure at every level.  Grades were not given for efforts or improvement.  I agree with Teresa that the semester tests were impossible.  The worse however was the "dance" unit.  The "test" was a process of trying to stay in the dance without making a single mistake.  I had been folk dancing for years before high school and could never make it past the "C" group.  At the end perhaps 4-6 girls were left and that became the "A" group.  And then there was Miss Branderberg and the shower checks...

I hated PE.   The one C we were allowed to still make the honor roll was my C in physical education.  I don't recall being taught much of anything -- either you could do whatever, or you couldn't.  Those of us who wore glasses had to wear "glasses guards" so we couldn't see either way.   That made ping pong/table tennis  especially hazardous, not to mention trying to hit or catch a baseball.  Theresa Eve's sister Mary and I were the worst in ping pong, so we played each other - and she beat me.  My sister was hit in the eye with a racket and could never wear contacts.   And the shower situation was degrading.

I agree with many of the assessments re gym class at Woodland High.  The uniforms were so ugly...remember how we had to embroider our names on socks and gym suits?  I was so glad my last name was only 4 letters.  The shower part was most unpleasant, and I was never an athletic person, so generally my endeavors did not please the instructors.  I still remember Miss Brandenburg glaring at me for my not-good attempts at doing the perfect push up.  And 1st period swimming---that was not fun.  Wet and cold afterwards on some days and then the walk back over to the high school.  I remember Miss Strand.

I noticed in checking the 1964 "Ilex" year book we ladies had 4 Phys Ed teachers.  Miss Brandenburg was the department head and 3 assistances, Virgina Manker, Beverly Olson and Sandra Strand and none were married at the time.

Aileen, the PE teachees were all licenced.  Mrs. Ling was at WHS for the '61-'62 school year when I was a 9th grader.  She did not come back in "62.  Don't know if she was there prior to me starting high school.  The only assistants were students and I was one for my senior year.  There were three grades each period.  And you are right none appeared to be married.

I don't remember Miss Manker but I had PE 7th period and loved it. Remember the thing we wore over our gym clothes and they were called pennys when we played tennis or whatever sport we needed them for.

To all the Cacheville (Yolo Tech) group:  Sorry to post this but Mr. Jess Camacho passed away.  One of the best!  Will be remembered with fond memories of our little country school.

Thank you  Marilee for the information regarding the passing of Mr. Jess Camacho.  I  remember when Dad, Arthur N. Eve, hired the young Mr. Camacho at Cachevill School. (1963) Mr. Camocho was very active in teaching sports, as well teaching in the classroom.  His history shows he was successful for many years as a teacher.  A job well done.

Remembering my First Fourth of July at Fort Sill, OK,  The Fiield Artillery School.   The Fireworks show that they  put  on was spectular.    I learned a lot about Artillery that Summer of 1968 as a young Second LT.

Cannon cockers have alot to learn, but the basic principal is what goes up, comes down.   :)

Hey Mike!
 velocityislandpark.com

this is the site to check out the water park.  We've not been there but it's a pretty big deal.  They hold "big deal" competitions.   Check it out!

Jim I was at Fort Sill from Oct. 1967 to March of 1969. Played baseball for the Post team in 1968 & 1969. We traveled all over Oklahoma playing semi- pro teams, College freshman teams, and other Military baseball teams.  Military life was good after spending a year in Vietnam.  Oct. 1966 to Oct. 1967.

How many remember going out to the Sunset Drive-in on the night of the 3rd of July to watch fireworks? Pete Garret who owned the Drive-in provided a good fireworks show the night before the 4th, so we could also take in the show at the fairgrounds on the 4th. I'm not sure how long this tradition continued??

Larry Polete    It is good to hear from you after all these years.   I was surprised to hear that you were at Fort Sill, OK,  The same time that I was.   I kept trying to avoid Vietnam as long as I could but I finally gave up and with my UC Davis ROTC Commission as a Young 2nd LT,  I decided that it was time to go and make the best of it.    I did ok in adjusting Artillery fire and learned a lot about Fire Direction Centers.  I had the most fun firing the 105 howersiter.    Too bad it did not know that you were there then.   Later in Sep of 68 I went down to Fort Wolters, TX where I learned to fly Helicopters and then on to Fort Rucker, AL where I finished up and Graduated.  I went to Vietnam in June of 1969 and stayed with my Unit, the 128th Aaviation Company for one year,  365 Days til June of 1970 when I came Home.  My Brother Tom who ran Track with you was in Vietnam two years Later and he just passed away two years ago.   All my best to yu and hope to see you some time soon.     LTC Retired James Barger.
