As long as you got me remembering Woodhaven Lanes and the Corkwood.  This was the "Nice Restaurant" in Woodland, if you could not afford to go to Sac for fancy dinners, this is where we went. So yes, for Junior Prom, this is where I went with JoLinda Cooper. and there is one more VERY MEMORABLE TIME  Sep 6 1967

Terry, you just brought back some sweet memories for me.  Mom actually helped with the Junior Bowling League at the new bowling lanes.  The Gieses lived straight down the street from us, but on Gum Ave.  I believe your mom and Gladys were sisters.  My cousin, Joan Gates, lived down the street from your home on Elliot St.  I remember going to a dance at your home when I was in sixth grade, and she was in eighth.  I think she danced every dance, and I was the flower-on-the-wall.  Your younger brother, John, asked me to dance and I said "no."  I was so bashful and quiet then; the total opposite of my cousin.  When we all learned the twist, I was good to go.  LOL  I also remember my mom singing in the kitchen when she did dishes.  I don't know how many know this, but when Mom was a teenager, she sang once a month with the bands that played up the valley at dances.  She also was an excellent piano player.  After just three lessons she was able to play any music placed in front of her.  Dad bought her a beautiful accordian and she could even play that without lessons.

Wow Greg! Woodhaven Lanes did play a memorable role in your life in the '60's. Once you got to the induction center, did you have to keep on going, or did they bring you back to Woodland?

Richard Wyrsh's parents were friends with my parents during the 1940's.  They went to Las Vegas with them when they got married.  I remember "Babe" bowling one year at the "Old" lanes and Richard sometimes went with her.  I think he also was in the class of 1965.

Hi Janet

At Oakland, it was "1A" and I ended up going to Ft Lewis for Basic. That was what happened to everyone on that bus, including the guy from Yolo that had lost half his fingers to a Hay Mower. The Dr told him, "You still have your trigger finger". I posted that mostly to see how many other Yolo County draftees left from the Woodhaven Lane Parking Lot

Hi Greg,

I had no idea they were picking up draftees at the bowling alley. What sad times those were. You'd think they would pick up at the bus depot instead of a recreation establishment, knowing the grimm destination.

I was already in the Air Force in '67, in Korea actually, not a great assignment but at least was'nt Viet Nam.

Cheers Greg,  I left for the induction  center then on to Fort Ord from the bus depot on East St. on Oct. 6, 1965, 2 days before my 21st birthday. The other 2 were Eddie McKee and James Scott.  Never a good thing to get a letter from Marion Bailey.  See ya in August.

After doing a little more research, it appears that Woodhaven Lanes opened in Late 1960 or early 1961. Seems there was a tournament at Woodland Bowling on East St. in 1960 then leagues started at Woodhaven in 1961. Anaybody correct me if I'm wrong.

I remember my Dad helping  demolish the inside of the bowling alley on East St. He used the old bowling pins, set up in his wood lathe, to drive a long sanding belt that he used to polish rifle and shotgun barrels before, bluing them. Many of the good looking bowling pins were turned into lamps for his friends. Seveal pieces of the old maple lanes were turned into cutting boards and coffee tables.

Melanie McKinzie-Petersen (Rued) (1967)

Hey Monte, I always have an opinion, however, I know better than to think everyone should agree, and furthermore,  try to bad mouth them in to agreeing with me. My ego does not require that.                                         How are you and yours?

Well said Melanie.  Many should take your advice.

Haven't checked in for a while but I see nothing has changed, free speech and free exchange of ideas still not popular with some. Small thinking led the country to the steps of an authoritarian govt. We dodged that bullet but barely and aren't out of the woods yet. Continue to ignore the facts and all Freedoms will be lost.

SMH 🤦‍♂️

Please no politics. We all have multitudes of sources to get information from and to dialog with concerning the political scene. I do not susbribe to this site for political opinions, but for what it is intended for in the first place.

Thank you

Politics and religion.  While it has pretty much been an accepted though unwritten rule, 'politics and religion' haven't been explicitly prohibited topics in the Forum Rules.  They invariably cause discord, and recognizing that, the forum members pretty much self-policed themselves and implored others to follow suit.  Unfortunately, that doesn't work with everyone.  Accordingly, I have added 'politics and religion' to the taboos on the Message Forum.  Please read and heed.

Thanks Gary and Joan. This has been (and still is) a great site for Woodland nostalgia and memories of our childhood. Much of the stuff, from older school mates ('60-'65) especially, is stuff I never knew or barely remember. For instance I barely remember the old quonset hut bowling alley on East Main. I was too young to bowl but I do remember running around in there while my parents were bowling. Thanks for jogging my memory. And especially thanks to those who post old school photos and other photos. Thanks to all who contribute and keep up the good work.

Was there not a quonset hut just south of the old main building?  I had an art class with Mr. Brown in my senior year and I think class was held in that hut.  The main building was being demolished and the wrecking ball was very distracting during class.  When Joel mentioned the old bowling alley I got to thinking about it.  Correct me if I'm wrong.

Above: Old, old bowling alley (?), looking from the south...   Still there

Below, in the top middle of the lower left quadrant...

The image date is 6/3/2021.  Currently it looks like the front is getting a face lift; not sure what lies in store for the building but something is going on.

JoAnn, yes the "hut" was art!  My Freshman yr I had Mrs Sally Corson and was in the building facing College.  Soph, Jr and Sr was in the Hut with Mr Bob Gordon.  Loved them both.

Joan Richter (Lucchesi) (1960)

Gary, I don't believe this was the old Quonset hut on East Mail (at the time called the River Road). The background just isn't right. Our ranch was behind it and to the right and it seems there are too many buildings behind it. It was pretty much all farmland. I could be wrong but I don't remember it a double Quonset either.

Tell me about where the Quonset at the high school was. It was nine years after I left and I was living in Hawaii but I sure can't place one at WHS.

Joan, This photo  is only a year old. It doesn't depict how it was in the late 50s.  Facetiously, it's called progress over the last 60 years.
