Tom Stewart - thank you for your post and comment about Craig Mayfield.  Very well said.  My observation about Mr. Mayfield's posts is he's craving attention.....

Loved the articles about the Pet Parade.  What I remember is a carnival held in City Park in the summer sponosored by the Kiwanis Club?  Anyone remember this?  I can remember winning gold fish.

Joel,

The 3-Jay Market was on the east side of 4th St, between Court and North.  Al (Pee Wee) Medina bought it from Ted and Nellie Jacques and renamed it Lo-Cut Market.  Bob Wademan and Larry Highfill had their first barber shop next door, taking over from Pete Doane and Sid Whitaker.

The barber shop across from the Brackets pool hall was Joe Montoya, who had just left Top Hat Barbers with Rick Gonzales, Ted Ramirez and Vince Guerrero. Top Hat was later owned by my classmate, Paul Giusti, until he retired 1 1/2 years ago. Joe later moved across the street next to the Pasttime Club and called it Pasttime Barber Shop. Joe was my barber until he retired.  Brackett later moved to the north side of Main St, between 2nd and 3rd. Played a lot of Snooker there with the great Dave Saucedo.

Dale Weishahn once told me that if you wanted information on the happenings in Woodland, you went to Paul Giusti.   If you wanted a haircut, you went to a barber,  He, of course, said that tongue in cheek.

Dan,

Pee Wee was the asst. mgr at Raleys under Wally Sheffields father Carl in the 60s  His wife had expensive tastes and he got caught stealing from Raleys.  He went to prison and bought 3 Jay Market after his release. He was a good man with a very greedy wife.  Knew him well. Bobby Matta never worked at Raleys.  He was always in construction and quit HS after his junior year to go to work. I believe Rich Mata worked there though. Different spelling.

I spent half my income at 3J market since I lived by Fourth and Grafton Street.  I got my hair cut next door by Sid and Karl.  Wow, the good ole' days.  What was the name of the hamburger place next to Pioneer Market on West Main street?

All the high school kids went to the "Brownie" or the hamburger stand near Bush and First Street.

I remember it was close to the Parish Hall.  We spent a lot of time around the hall and the Flying A station and Chicago Cafe.   Which end of Beamer you refering to?  By Matroni Lumber or Clark Field?

Dan, now I am curious. The next time I see Bobby I will find out.  The place you describe in more like where Louie, Rudy, Pete, Richard and Ernie Lucero lived on Emerald and Cleveland, next to an alley. They were right up from where John Didion, Jim Moody, Nusz's, etc lived.  I cannot remember there being an alley around Clark Field area.

Don, I knew he lived in Yolano Village. Next time you see him ask him who lived around Parish Hall area.  Off of Dead Cat Alley. I am curious now. Maybe it was one of his relatives. We played a lot of ball at the "labor camp" as they called it, behind the Village. A lot of our classmates lived there.

Don...before Camerena Park...there was a rows of small housing.........they tore down and built the Little League Field.....Correct?

08/26/17 01:31 PM #3923

Doyle Phillips (1961)

Dan, I cannot remember him living there. I remember him living at the Yolano Village, or Labor Camp as they called it. We played a lot of ball there.  The scales were there behind Tafoya's market.  If was a good location to get seasonal work.    I do not remember a barber on First Street.  My first hair cuts were on Main between Elm and College. Until around 10 or 11 my dad always gave me a bowl cut or flat top and I would try to grow it long.

Were you a member of Law Enforcement in Woodland?

08/26/17 01:37 PM #3924

Dan Ree (Ree) (1964)

Doyle...that right about Bob...then he moved to Beamer and Walnut....Yes ...I was a memeber of Law Enforcement....1968 to 1982..Retired on a Medical

Burke Fong, A lot was mentioned about you connection to the Cafes in Woodland. Were you related to Henry Fong at the United Market, just up from the Chicago Cafe next to Tracy Ford?

Don Murdoch (1962)

Dan,   Camarena Field opened in 1956 when I was 11.  Bobby lived across the strreet at that time. Bob, Marv Klinkhammer, John Rademaker and others had a team of Beamer Bums and challenged us Dingle Berries, Paul Giusti, Bing Crowley, Ron Carston and others to a game just before the Little League season started.  We had played two innings and the police ran us off.

Doyle.  The only relatives of Bobby that I recall was Manuel Rubio, a cousin.  Manuel was quite an athlete as was Bobby.  There were no relatives named Matta as Bobby came from Texas when he was 6 years old.

My first barber was Cliff's Barber Shop next to the State Theater.  Four barbers, no waiting. Larry Highfill's uncle was one of them, 4th chair as I recall. Then I started going to Joe Montoya at Top Hat. There was more cigarette smoke in Cliff's than there was at any bar.  Couldn't breathe
