The former Giant Orange north of Redding (Oasis or Pine St. I-5 offramps) is still alive as Joe's Giant Orange Mexican restaurant, and it is REALLY GOOD! And they do fresh squeeze orange juice. I find it interesting that many of us had the same experience when it came to getting to go to a restaurant "way back when" our folks had very little cash. Can't remember the name, but the place I got to go to ONCE-I was maybe 6 or 7- was on the SE corner of Beamer and East St. Went there after church one Sunday a.m. That was a big deal. Lots of  dressed-up folks; this country kids' eyes were popping. The building is still there; it's now Zitio's Sports Bar.

When I was 16.5 years old, I was a carhop at the Woodland A&W and worked for Norm Joerger.  At that age you can lift anything no matter what the weight.

My girlfriend at the time, Pat Phipps, worked as a car hop in 1962 at the A&W.  Her mother, Rena, was the daytime burger flipper/cook.  Can't believe she supported 2 teenaged daughters on what she made working for Norm.  Played a lot of golf and poker with Norm.  He was a better poker player than golfer.  Great guy.

Jill:  Thank you.  Maybe our family was not poor in some respects, as the memories were golden.   Mother and Dad did their best to give and tell us to be open to others.  A annual fish dinner in San Francisco, remains a total gift in Christmas Memories.

Ditto to your posts, Theresa and Danny!  My dad worked for PG&E, and my mom worked at Yolo General Hospital in Medical Records.  Mr. Whitaker was her first boss, and Karen Dettling was, until we moved to Placerville in 1964.  My memory of having "fast food", wwas #1:  Rich's Drive-in on the corner of Bush and Second Street (?)!  Of course, that was a REAL treat; not just whenever mom didn't want to cook!  Neverr happened!    There was no McDonald's back then.  For an extra special treat, we got Chinese food at Fong's or The Chicago.  My dad carried a lunch pail, every day to work.  Mom made our lunches every day, except once in a great while, we got to eat in the cafeteria!  Dingle, Beamer, and Harriet Lee.  My fvorite was either Spanish Rice, or Chile!  Yum!!!!    The best part was the price!  $.25.  The State Theatre, also $.25; unless you sat up in the "Loges" (sp)!  That was $.75.  My mom gave me $.30.  The movie, and a nickel for Neccos!   If I could sqqueeze another $.10, I got popcorn!  Ah!  Sweet Memories!  Happy New Year Everyone!

Rosemary and Dan:  Those were the days!  I remember eating lunch at Woodland High, if I did not pack my lunch, which was often with the rush in the morning; I had the choice of tomato soup for $.25 from the Cafeteria or the Lunch Shack outside, $.25 for a small hamburger.  Glad I had some babysitting jobs to have the extra cash.  It was always - pack your lunch at my house.  Those prices were amazing.

Rosemary:  I remember you.  Didn't know you moved to Placerville though.  One little correction--Rich's Drive-in was located on First Street.  Bush Street dead-ended into Rich's parking lot.  Of course my memories are rather cloudy.  Haven't lived in Woodland for 25 years and the trips I've taken to return seem to always follow the same path.

You are right, Aileen. My sister, Mona, worked at Riches for years. Happy New Year, everyone!

It seems to me Rich's was on W. Main next to Pioneer Mkt. and the burger place at the intersection of Bush and 1st street was Kent's and later Al's.

Tim, you are so right! How the memory fades! But my sister did work at both of them! Rich's first, then Kents.

We only knew it as "The Frostie" It was across from the Yolo Grocery. The best thing was the swirlie ice cream cone dipped in chocolate. A wonderful treat on a 90+ degree Woodland summer day on the walk back from the Municiple Swimming Pool.

   Herschell Coleman Johnson

Herschell Coleman Johnson, 93, passed away on Dec. 9, 2017, at his home in Roseville. He was born in Dothan, AL to Arthur and Essie Lee (Kirkland) Johnson. After graduating from Dothan High School, he entered the US Army when WWII began and served proudly in the 8th Armored Division which helped liberate Belgium. While in basic training, Herschell met Gloria Rappa, his commanding officer's daughter. They wed in 1945, moved to Gloria's home in San Francisco, and raised three wonderful sons.

A natural born salesman and shrewd independent businessman, Herschell held numerous sales positions and repped fabric companies that sold to US government agencies in the US and abroad. Later he bought an almond ranch in Capay, CA on which he and Gloria lived until her death in 1989. In 1990, Herschell married Glenna Schuyler whom he met playing bridge in Woodland. During their happy life together, they lived in Davis and Lake Berryessa for eight years before moving to Roseville's Sun City community where Herschell enjoyed the RV Club, Elks Club, bocce, golf, hosting card parties, and overseeing his rental properties in California and Alabama. Herschell was a charismatic Southern gentleman who made friends with just about everyone he met. His love for family and friends plus his enthusiasm for whatever he did kept him going and going until his generous heart gave out.

We will miss him. He is survived by his wife, Glenna; sons, Don Johnson, Ralph (Kris) Johnson, and Rick (Luanne) Johnson; step-daughters, Dana Schuyler and Belinda (WHS 1969) (Jim) Wetmore; step-son, Tom Schuyler; sisters, Betty (Jesse) Sanchez and Mathilda (Ray) Dempster.

Gary Wegener (Wegener) (1966)

In line with our apparent theme of death and dying,

Joanie went down to renew her driver's license.  Part of the paperwork you fill out address the organ donor program.

There was a box to check if you wanted to donate your organs upon death...

Below that (I am reading over her shoulder), it says: "Check this box if you would like to make a voluntary donation now..."

After I quit laughing, I read the rest of the line and it was talking about a $2 monetary donation to the organ donor program that you could include with your license renewal fee of $35.
