Kathy Northup (Schick) (1965)

Hello Friends, Especially Janet,

I have studied oaks, especially Quercus lobata, our Valley Oak, for more than three decades because they are hosts to my tiny stingless wasps.  Many oak trees get mistletoe, a PARTIAL parasite, and I have never observed (nor found any academic observations of) them killing the host oak tree.  They do deprive the oak of some water and minerals, which might further stress a tree, already stressed by drought, Armillaria spp. Infection, and/or other major stresses.  So while mistletoe-laden oaks might die, the death should not be attributed directly to the mistletoe.

Please don't destroy these beautiful native trees.

Thank you.

Cheers,

Katherine Schick, PhD. Entomology

I would like to thank everyone for their input about mistletoe.  Sorry Tim but I liked Monty's comment better about the corny toe.

This is very sad news to learn that our friend Vern Larson has passed.  I got to know him so personally through this Woodland Forum, and enjoyed him so very much.  My condolences to Eldon Larson and all his family.  Life is so very short, enjoy each minute with a smile and praise.  Blessings to Vern, and Family.

Your right Elvis, Vern was larger than life with a heart the same size. He loved this site, W.H.S,  and our class reunions. God and his family were his priority, he was such a kind man. His sister called me last night and told me he died doing what he loved.  Riding his bicycle on the bike paths in San Diego, where he lived. He had a heart attack. When I think of Vern I will always think of his huge smile, always a welcome to everyone. Rest in peace, dear friend, you will truly be missed.

One of the highlights of our last reunion was getting to talk with Vern in person. I got to "know him" thru this site, so it is always nice to put a :real person" to the virual person. You will be missed Vern, and it was fun to getting to know you and your adventures. Condolences to your family, R.I.P. friend, Sadly,2020 continues to be the year that just keeps giving

I'm going to "Repost" this pic, for Vern. The is the old Cache Creek Grocery, along SR113 just north of Woodland. Vern;s family ran the grocery in the old days and the family  lived in the rooms at the rear,

I knew Vern from probably 7th grade on.  Got in touch again maybe 6 months ago.  He greatly encouraged me to sign up for this WHS website, and so I did.  He had a great personality and was such a positive person.  I am so sorry to hear of his passing, but he had written me that his whole life he liked to be physically active--through his jobs and so on--and so I am thinking he got to leave us while doing what he loved.  Not such a bad thing.  RIP Vern.

The Larson family was shocked by the sudden passing away of Vern A, Larson (class of 1960 WHS) on October 19, 2020.  Very little is known at this time,  but I will give you what I can.  Vern is a mountain bike enthusiasts and living in San Diego by canyons was in hog heaven.  He left Monday 6am and hit the trails and is usually back in 3 hours.  He hadn't got back and Anna couldn't reach him by phone.  The family uses a tracking program app called 360 on your phone and it gives you a history of where you've been. Anna called a biking friend of Vern's and he followed the map and found him along the trail.  The history shows Vern slowing down and stopping.  Vern had a pacemaker installed about four years ago but hasn't had any problems.  He might of had a heart attack or a stroke, we just don't know.  What I do know, Vern and Anna were happy, Vern was doing what made him happy and he went out with a smile.  One thing for certain in life, we don't always have an opportunity to know when we are called back to be in our Father's presence in Heaven. One more thought, since we don't know when our time is up on earth, we should make every effort to be kind to our family members, never leave angry and look to the good of others.  That being said, I want to tell Vern I'm sorry for wearing his clothes in school, but to my defense he had all the good stuff.

Thank you for sharing with us what you know.  I'm sorry for the loss of your brother, but I need to tell you your comment over the clothes "borrowing" made me smile.

Eldon thank you for sharing, and I'm very sorry for the loss. It is devastating. Greg nice picture of the store. But if anyone has a picture of "the tree" this would be a good time to post it. I have a great picture of "the tree" in my mind but haven't figured out how to upload it. Be  safe everyone it's 2020.

I was so sad to hear that Vern passed away. My prayers go out to his family. Vern set a very good example of caring about people. He had such a good heart for others. Him and my sister Jo class of 1960  (who passed away 3 yrs.ago) became very good friends years ago. He will be missed.

I never knew Vern personally, but like many of us, was drawn to his warm, compelling way of conveying thoughts and memories. Condolences to his family. And another big "LIKE" emoji to Greg K. for the pic of the Cache Creek store, although I've gotta say, it would be more realistic if there were a lot of pick-ups parked out front of it.

Eldon and Shelly ~ I'm so sorry to read about Vern, your beloved brother and brother-in-law.  I enjoyed his contribution to this site.  He even responded to me personally about remembering me riding my horse to your parent's grocery store in the country.  He'll be missed.
