Elvis Kelley (1962)

I don't remember any other way to get to Camp Harvey West other than the boat ride across the 2 lakes and through the small channel between them. I can't imagine how many boat trips it would take to get all that lumber in there. I remember going to church service and sitting on wood benches that I believe came from local trees. It was a great time.

Sometime around 1980, my brother David (WHS Class of '62) and I took a canoe up to the lake and paddled across the lake through the narrow channel as Elvis described. We camped on the shore where there was an outhouse, but I don't recall any other facilities. We may not have even been at the original site. But it was a nostalgia trip for Dave who was a boy scout with Doc Camp as scoutmaster. I went to a lot of scout gatherings in that very cool Boy Scout Cabin in Woodland even though I never got past cub scouts. Great memories though.

I got to go to Camp Harvey West one summer. lots of crafts, couldn't stand swimming in that cold cold lake. Especially remember the long hike to desolation valley folowing a trail marked with 3 rocks stacked on top of each other and blaze marks on trees. We got lost at least once. Kind of scarry back then picking distant land marks and then walking in larger and larger circles until we found the trail again.

Ron Blickle, yes, the scout cabin in still used by the boy scouts AND also rented (I believe) by the Lions Club for their fundraisers. If you drive by on Saturdays there are usually a group of scouts packing up to go somewhere.

My Dad, Arthur Eve, along with Jesse Comacho were  Eagle Scout Troop leaders for Troop No. 299.  Here is a great picture of the Scouts in action.  Every summer they would go to Camp Harvey West.  As a family we were allowed to stay in the family area.  Great fun.  Yes, the boat ride across the lakes to get to Camp Harvey West was great, especially through the very narrow streams between two islands.

Those of us in the class of 63 are celebrating our 60th Anniversary of graduation from the old WHS on College Street.  If you remember, they had a hard time destroying that old building, which had been condemned because it was deemed a earthquake hazard.  What a waste!

Also celebrating an anniversary is the movie, American Grafitti, which is only 50 years old.  That came as close to any movie about the lives of us that went to High School in the 1960's.  Partially filmed in Modesto (George Lucas hometown) and Petaluma, there were many actors that went on to become famous from that low budget classic film.  It would have been great to show that movie before or after our coming reunion.

How is the attendance coming for this next reunion?  Any numbers yet?

Ron,

Keeper of the Senior Calss Movie of 1963 made by Gary Dodson and Bruce Baccehi.  I would like to show it as I have at other Past 1963 Reunions and also American Graffiti  But I would need a dark room of Moderate size in order to show them.  Yolo Fairgrounds is too open and too much llight and noise in order to show them Off.

Breaking news, and boy, you don't want to miss this one.

David Jorz, WHS class of '65, completed a bicycle ride across America at the age of 76 about 2 weeks ago. He rode 4,100 miles with about 144,000 feet of climbing in 78 days. Here is a  Aug 9th Daily Democrat article about it, and it was the subject of an interview by Channel 31 and 13.  Google Dave Jorz and you might find TV coverage showing this weekend.  Dave things the ride likely sets a new Guinness World Record for the oldest person, male or female, to bicycle across America.  If you want an autograph, he plans to be at the reunion.   (Does WHS have a 'hall of fame'?)

Woodland High School Classmates who have passed, is very sad to read the names.  I can recall their faces.  In honor to remember their lives spent with us in our high school days.

Thank you for posting this list of classmates who have passed in the last year.  I was saddened to see the name of Peter Garrett on the list.  I was at Holy Rosary with Peter before WHS and he was a very kind and thoughtful person.  I googled both the Woodland Daily Democrat and the Sacramento Bee but found no obituary on Peter.  Does anybody know of an obituary for Peter?  Larry Michalak (Class of 1960)

Larry: I did not find an obit either but found out from his sister, Susie. He had been in the Califorian and had Dementia.

I just checked the "Stroll thru History" Woodland site to see when the stroll for this year will be, early Oct and one of the house Open this stroll will be the Gable Mansion. This was the Giant Haunted House when we were kids :-) and it alone is worth the price of the stroll this year.I got a chance to see the insides on one of the Chrismas strolls. Don't miss your chance to see this beauty!! I attach a photo I took in 1971 of the mansion before restoration .

The elderly lady was Mrs Hayes Gable. I used to deliver the Sacramento Bee to her house and went to her door each month to collect. She would invite me into her home while she wrote the check. She was obviously quite lonely and just wanted someone to talk with. She mostly lived on the ground floor. Their family owned a hops ranch over on the old river road leading to Bryte. Nice family.

Marilyn Millsap (Thompson) (1961)

The elderly lady who lived in the Gable Mansion was Miss Gertrude Gable.  My grandmother lived across the street for many years and was a friend of hers. She lived with her unmarried sister, Myrtle, and for a while Harriet Lee also lived there.  Yes, they lived mostly on the ground floor. Gertrude was a legal secretary to a local lawyer (maybe Elmer Armfield?) and would walk to work up First Street wearing her white gloves.  Their niece, Mary Porter, lived two blocks south on First St. next door to my parents.

Question. What does the monument at Monument Hill Park (cemetery by Fliers Club) commemorate? I always thought it was the geographical center of something. Perhaps the Universe. I'm suspecting that if anyone knows it will be Mayfield.
