Greg, with the older picture of the Woodland Court House, you solved the question on where the Park Book picture with the lady was actually taken.  Enjoy the old history.  Thank you.

Hi All,

There where two bird bath looking fountains. One in Freeman park and one at the court house. I'm pretty sure there where other fountains in parks and in front of buildings around town.. The fountain at the court house had a fountain in the middle that actually had water shooting up at one time. The one at freeman park had no such structure in the middle.  Anyone else remember details?

Bernard, you may be correct, the columns could be different.  Such a mystery?

I think we have more work to do on identifying where the picture of the fountain was taken.  The fountain is four steps off the ground and any of the pictures I have seen of the court house is ground level.  I also don't see the light posts in the court house picture.

"Lady at the Fountain." I do believe that was at Woodland's forgotten park, Freeman Park. It had few attractions for kids and by far the favored park in the northeast part of town was Beamer Park. Being just down Main Street a few blocks from the train station, it become a hobo hang out. I'm only guessing, but the fountain may have been removed because it was being used and misused by transients, what we now call "the homeless."

About 40 years ago my brother David and I spent three weeks traveling around Argentina. Buenos Aires has many nice parks but the homeless took over most of them. So the government spent millions on high-rise apartments to house the homeless. After 6 months the hallway carpets were soiled, rooms were trashed, and metal plumbing, cooling and electrical equipment were stolen. And many of the tenants returned to the parks or otherwise disappeared That was 40 years ago. They still struggle with the homeless problem just like we do here. Obviously there is no easy solution.

Joel, that is a good thought for the possibility of the Lady by the Fountain. .Freeman Park was once very pretty, but it kept going down and the City of Woodland remodeled.  I never liked to walk by it with all the different characters there.

Spent many years of my childhood summers at Freeman park attending the Woodland summer recreation program. Gimp weaving, basket weaving, Plaster of paris pouring and painting, glass painting, and all around being the bane of the councilors. We went there in the morning with a sack lunch and stayed all day.

Great observations Michele! I totally missed them.

Come to think of it, Bernie, we did have T-ball practice at Freeman Park. I did all my crafts at Beamer. I didn't know Freeman had summer crafts. I stand corrected.

Orval, thanks for the notice about 11:00 am tee times, but I'll be visiting my sister in Sacramento who just had major surgery. I'm looking forward to seeing you, Harrison, Rick and all our other classmates from '64 at our reunion Saturday evening.

Ugh, Theresa, after being reminded of that photo, I don't know whether I should change my plans for Saturday? I was equally embarrassed when Jane Podgasky put it in the Ilex.

Theresa Eve (1964)

Howard, you should smile for this was our youth. Mrs. Podgasky was right about putting your picture in the Ilex, smart lady.   Glad you are coming Saturday.  Be kind to yourself.  It will be a good time for all.

I'm looking forward to it, Theresa.

Actually Howard it wasn't Mrs. P that chose that pic of you for the Ilex.  It would have been selected by one of the staff.  Could have been me but I don't remember.  Mrs. P would have only vetoed pics that were offensive.  Yours was not.  Jo Ann ( Ilex team member (1963-64)

Congratulations to the class of '64 reunion committee - you did a great job!!  I would say that the event was a huge success!!!

I agree with Dee: a great 60th reunion! And JoAnn, thanks for clarifying; I've blamed Jane for far too long.

Marilee, so great to see you again, (also a Sugar Queen Contestant from 1965).  The 1964 Class Reunion was so very nice, seeing everyone again was most delightful.  Thanks to Smokey Rico and all his hard working Committee.  Rick Gonzales worked extra hard locating all the class members, quite a list which he and Anne Douglas Loud created.  Greg, thank you for posting the 1964 Sugar Queen Contestants.  Those ladies still remains as beautiful today.     .
