Yes, there were  some schools I had never heard of before I saw them listed.   Grafton Elementary School was in Knights Landing.

There was a Gibson School wasn't there?

I attended Grafton for 8 years (we didn't have a kindergarten back then).  It was a huge change for me when I started at WHS - I had never gone to different rooms and teachers for different subjects before.  I do remember going to Cacheville for the dancing one year.  We had learned the dances during several sessions prior to going to Cacheville.

Steve, we all practiced those folk dances first.  For the event, the girls wore green full skirts and white blouses; the boys wore white shirts.  Joel, Gibson school was in Woodland on Gibson road, kindergarten to 8th grade.  My mother taught kingergarden and then 4th grade at Gisbons school.

Ah yes. I guess that was within the Woodland city limits. When I was in 6th grade at Beamer, I played percussion in the Beamer band and piano in the orchestra at Dingle School. Other than WHS, I thought Dingle and Beamer were the only schools in Woodland. I didn't discover Holy Rosary until 7th grade. Mary and you have a strong resemblance to your mother.

Joel:  Thank you, about Mother's resemblance, she is missed.  You and all brothers and sister were very talented in music and smart in all subjects.  Many years since the 1960s being around the Childers family:( David, Brian, Joel and Liz). Here is a picture taken in the 1980s of all the Eve ladies at a family reunion in Arizona.  Pretty much the same smile. Theresa, JoAnne, Mary, and Gwendolyn Eve.  That was a fun trip to JoAnne's home.

Thanks to everyone that came in with the names of the different Schools, some of which I knew about and some that I did not! Does anyone have pix of those schools? I can remember how Beamer, with the gorgeous brick work looked, but I was never inside the buildings. The only pic I have of Holy Rosary is how it was pictured on Post Cards. The front of the building burned when I was in Third grade and we continued in the unburned part until mid sixth grade when we moved to the new building on California Street of which I have no pic

Greg: It is sad that the Woodland School District does not have a historical album of all schools with dates. They list the schools currently, but not the history as we remember.   For Beamer Elementary School this is the only picture I found.

Maxwell Primary Elementary School early 1950s. My sister Mary attended while it was a school.  175 Walnut Street Woodland.  Primary School was started by Rhoda Maxwell in 1918.  Later in 1968 it closed as a school and became the District Office for the Woodland Unified Schools.  Architectural syle is Mission  Revival  by William H. Weeks.  He was also the architect for the Woodland High School, Woodland Library, and the Woodland Court House to name a few.  (Later, I found this information in the book, Crafting a Valley Jewel page 77. fig. 61)  I always liked the bell towers.

Thanks Theresa. Nice photo, really nice looking building, a part of town I rarely went into, so no memories of that buillding. Next time in Woodland, I'll go by it!

Frances Handley (Jones) (1964)

Thanks again Theresa! About Rhoda Maxwell school (aka The Primary School) . The class of 1964 was in Kindergarten in 1951. There was a morning & an afternoon kindergarten class. We also went to First grade there , teacher Miss Croco & Second grade, teacher Miss Gregory. Third grade we continued at Maxwell but only went half of the day, teacher Mrs. Darrow .They were building the new Freeman school & in January we transferred to it .I lived on the corner of Walnut & Beamer and had to ride my bike to Freeman ( & as I remember that darn North wind blew every day! ) Most everyone else lived in the new houses westi of West St. so my mother got me transferred to Beamer for Fourth grade . They must have  closed Maxwell st the end of the next year as my sister only went to kindergarten there & then to Beamer .That  was 1955. It became the Superintendents & school board offices.

Greg l also have a memory of the Holy Rosary fire. At that time we lived at 509 North st . When the school burned, the neighbor lady had a car & we all got in her car &went down Main St , parking next to Nugget and watched the fire trucks putting out the fire. I remember that wet, smokey wood smell very well.

This is kind of a "Duh" on my part. Last night I remembered the "1957 Woodland Book" I have copied & thought: "It shoud say something about Woodland Schools"! Sure enough, it had pictures of 6 schools!

Greg Kareofelas (1962)

Yes Frances, all these many years later, I can still remember that smell of wet smoky wood. My other memory is when the flames burned the tower and we all saw the cross fall.

Thanks for everyone's memories of the different schools. I'll try and find photos of the different "rural schools" now that you all have reminded me of the various names

Greg:  Good collection of school pictures.  Too bad they are not in color with established dates.  Seems we have to piece the history together from other sources. The loss of fine buildings like our original Woodland High School on College Street, was a disaster to our Woodland history.

Joan Richter (Lucchesi) (1960)

I went to kindergarten and first grade at the Primary School in 1947 & 1948. I transferred to Dingle in the second grade because we moved to the ranch. My father attended Dingle, and my grandmother taught there. Thanks for posting the pictures, Greg. I loved seeing  the pictures and miss having Dingle and WHS schools. They were beautiful.

Greg when you attended Holy Rosary in 52 when the fire happened did you have to go to Sacramento school for a short time? I remember when the fire happened. There was like an alley way next to the school and we would ride through there from Dingle and the High School fields when playing pee wee and minors baseball.

I went to Kindergarten in 48 at Maxwell. Had my first encounter with law enforcement. When the bell rang I headed to College Street and made it to across Beamer going home  and the Police picked me up and took me to the station. Actually got an ice cream. After that I had to stay until the LAST bell rang.

Jean Duncan (Miller) (1968)

Lee was an elementary school before it was turned into the junior high school. I attended kindergarten, first and second grades there (1955-1959) until I transferred to Dingle the year it opened as a junior high.

Hi Doyle  The Alley next to Holy Rosary was called "Academy Alley, or maybe Academy Lane". It ran from Lincoln to Main street. I remember that there were some palm trees growing close to it. Bobby Casias and I would hide little bags of Fritos in the trees (I have no idea why we did this smiley ) and eat them later in the afternoon.

No, I nver went to Sacramento for school after the fire. I remember that classes were held in the "Annex", a part of the big building that did not burn. The back wall to our class room was sheets of ply wood!

Here is a photo of Grafton Elementary, 1960-1961.  The view is from Hwy. 113, which ran through Knights Landing.

Thanks Steve for the pic of Grafton in Knights Landing. My dad and aunts went to that school in the 1930's, The two Pine Trees you can see in the school yard - the one on the left was planted by my dad and the one on the right was planted by my aunt Penny on an Arbor Day

Steve, great picture of Grafton School which I never knew about.  Boy, some Woodland Club could make some money putting together a calendar of these memorial  old schools with the archetect, which unfortunately have been torn down.  The history and dates built is so interesting.  They may have to reference our forum for those great pictures. Thank you Greg.
