I started piano lessons with Mrs. Hiatt on Court St. when I was 6. I think I was 14 when I quit. But I didn't practice much. I could play a 4 part hymn and managed to pass proficiency in college. I still have a small keyboard. In later years I sang with the Woodland Chamber Singers, which was an amazing experience. The choir was invited to be a signature choir at the Choral Festival at Carnegie Hall in NYC in 2014. The choir recently did concerts in the UK. I highly recommend their concerts in Woodland.

I started clarinet lessons in 4th grade at Dingle and, at age 81, am still playing with the Sacramento Symphonic Winds  - a lifetime of enjoyment (and mental health!). Put a musical instrument in the hands of every child instead of a gun. (no more politics, I promise)

Marilyn:  Good for you to keep up with your music, it is all the good stuff.  Wonderful to use the brain for improved mental health.  Amazingly wonderful for all ages. You know writing and getting thoughts on paper is another good exercise to keep.

Hi, Gary. Is it normal to have to log in every time we want to post on the forum?

I think many of us learned to play an instrument in school and not had an opportunity otherwise. I feel so fortunate to have grown up in a community that invested so much to our generation.

For the last couple of months I have not been receiving email notifications that there has been a new posting on the Message Forum.  Is anyonelse experiencing this issue?

08/30/25 08:27 AM #8519

Frances Handley (Jones) (1964)

Yes Kathy me neither. I had it set to both my emails & my main one  Outlook was not notifying me either . It was coming to my Gmail address which I don't usr that much.  Outlook has never come back even though both addresses are in there. I thought it was Outlook but I guess not. I tried deleting address & re-entering but still didn't work.

Janice Bell Killian,   Are you clicking on the "keep me logged in" box when you sign in? If clicked it should keep you logged in.

Thank you, Doyle. I thought I had long ago. It's just recently I started having trouble. Just clicked on it, so problem solved.

Interesting thoughts Bruce. There has to be stories behind those thoughts. Tell us the stories please.

rocksvolt, as childers called you, pretty funny . no disrespect intended. spooky 1-3  had to do with fear of the unknown as a boy. as far as spear fishing for tuna goes, i never did that , but i greatly respect those who have. that takes some cajones. i have spear fished and ab dove.little did i realize that white sharks were in the area. the movie jaws really screwed my perspective, as it did for many others.i was always a little appherensive in the ocean afterwards. i guess a little fear spices things up abit. i remember reading that an amours grouper was after you.

A postcard from the late 1940's, early 1950"s showing the corner of Main and College. It shows the Bank Building before the earthquake modification removed the heavy stone work from the roof. Before it was the Irish Bar, it was Wells Fargo, but before that it was AMERICAN TRUST CO & BANK. On Sep 27, 1951, I made a deposit and started a savings account in that bank. Mom saved the little deposit book so I could show it here :-)

greg... what was that tower in the back ground? i seem to have a vague memory of it.

Joan Richter (Lucchesi) (1960)

The tower is the original Catholic church on the corner of Main and Walnut Streets.

the other , closer one ?

09/05/25 07:07 AM #8532

Bernard Rocksvold (1965)

Bruce, Rocksvolt never had a negative connotation for me however when Larry Rosa gave me the nickname "Barnyard" for Bernard, that was pretty demeaning. As for the grouper love afair, The grouper was just pissed off because I shot it with a giant 3 rubber spear gun and it tried to take me to it's deep water home. Sharks never concerned me because one of us usually carried a "bang stick" powered by a 12 gauge shotgun shell. Made short work of a pesky shark and a quick meal for other sharks.

Yep, the tower in the background was the Catholic Church built on the corner of Walnut and Main. The properrty was sold in 1946 to L Knaggs and became a car lot. I'll try and find a pic of the church, it developed structural porblems and ahd to be torn down before it fell down.

And Bruce, I do not know what the closer tower is. One of the questions I wish I could ask my Dad, or Aunt Georgia, they would have been able to answer.
