Here's something different for you. During intermission at the State Theater, one song was played consistently, and it was Charmaine. For a trip back in time, go to YouTube and type in Montovani and His Orchestra - Charmaine (1958), now close your eyes and smell the popcorn. - I know we were grooving to Elvis and Buddy Holly, but don't be afraid, listening to Montovani won't hurt you.

Joel: My favorite cheap treat at the State Theater were Milk Duds. Saturday afternoon kids out of the house. I am still a big fan of Elvis Presely. Saw him in person at Lake Tahoe in the 1970s. So, so handsome, and a gentleman. Great show where he wore his white and blue jumpsuit, as he started his fashionable designs. Outstanding suit with the American Eagle in jewels. .

Saturday at the State Theater as a kid was magical. Double feature + cartoons + plus keep your ticket, you might win a bike. What was the name of the guy who got up on stage to announce the winners. Was he Uncle something?
Best seats were front row. Stretch out you legs. Yes Milk Duds, Juju Beans, Abba Dabas, Black Crows. And the best buttered popcorn on the planet. The empty boxes made great frizzbies. Also remember making goggles out of the empty boxes. An entire theater filled with happy, healthy screaming kids. The best years of our lives.

Saturday matinees were the best. I remember going to the Yolo Theater one Saturday. Won one of those rockets that you fill with water and then pump air into it. Couldn't wait. Went into the bathroom and filled it with water. Went back to the theater and pumped it with air. Released the rocket and ran like he**!!! Didn't go back to Yolo Theater for a while!!

I remember going to the movies at the Yolo theatre that also included a magic show. I won a rabbit. I don't think my parents expected me to come home from the movies with a white rabbit in a box.

Mike - If we didn't break a tooth on the juju bees, the abba dabba would pull out our fillings. I prefered those nutritious Necco Wafers. And don't forget those nice sodas that we dribbled on the floor so the next crowd had something sticky to walk on.

I got my haircut today. While I was sitting there I was drawn back to the good ol' days in Woodland. I thought about two things:

One was the A&W, specifically the Papa Burger, best burger on the planet for the time. Of course there was also that burger you could smell from a mile away that was prepared by, who was it the Elks club or Kiwanis at the entrance to the carnival at YOLO County Fair. That was a very comforting aroma. And then on to the Carny. Barkers, scary rides, 50 cents horses that only cost you 20 bucks, the rodeo, Myron Cohen playing the accordion and my mom going nuts. And so much more. My dad owned Hoover Tractor and we would drive the columbines and plows down East Street and set up to greet the farmers as they strolled toward the midway. We gave out free yard sticks and hats with Allies Chalmers logos on them. Crap I miss those days.

The second thing I thought about was getting my haircut as a little tyke. What was the name of the Barber Shop on main. Was it Cliff's? Need some help here guys. Haircuts for what, a quarter or 50 cents? My dad used to get a cut every couple of weeks. I got them quite often until the dreaded 60's! Oh what great memories come rushing back as we age. What a wonderful time and town we lived in.

Speaking of tractors, another favorite attraction upon entering the fairgrounds was the old tractors putt putt putting their old engines in an area behind the Kiwanis hamburger stand. I always preferred a greasy corn dog and cotton candy. When I was a little kid I wanted to head straight for the midway and it wasn't until high school that I began to appreciate the local displays of art, photography, crafts and the homemade jams and pies, etc. all with their award ribbons attached. And, of course, the animals. Those things were what a county fair is really about.

Wanted to tell all the contributers and especally Teresa Eve, you have given me years of enjoyment and pleasure reading all the memories and news about Woodland. I am now living in Fitchburg, WI near my son, David W. Nelson and his family. I just arrived here almost 3 weeks ago and am still getting settled. We did have a unique and wonderful upbringing in Woodland, during the 50's and 60's. Thanks for the memories.

If I posted this pic before, sorry for the repeat, but the talk of the Yolo county Fair, brought back memories. 1948 was the first year the Yolo Fair returned ( during WWII, the fairgrounds housed activities for the War effort and there was no fair) I can still actually remember that I got to sit on this Ford Tractor, with sister Sue under the watchful eye of my Grandmother. 35mm color slides that my dad took and I digitzed so they can be shared

Like Sue, Iv"e enjoyed over the years, all the photos and comments posted on the message forum. Today Kreg, your fair photo sparked a memorry of your grandparents, whose property backed up to Sunset Ave.,where my grand parents home was located next to the Air Plane house. As a little boy playing at my grandparents house the large gathering barbecue's your grandparents used to have, all the smoke and smells were fantastic. Then they put up a supper high wooden fence one year breaking my heart. All the smoke and wonderful smells were gone. Nellie and Lowell Archer were my grandparents and the lived across from Beamer School. My sister Sheryl and I attended Beamer School and had the option of eating our bagged lunch at school or at our grandparents house. I chose their house for all the goodies she baked. I loved visiting and staying at their house. Beamer Park was my hang out with all the local kids. Bob Eveland, who lived across the streer from the park was my best friend ever since the 2nd grade. We stayed close best friends until his passing. Growing up in Woodland and Yolo County during our generation was truley a Happy Days time. My grandsons love to hear about my life growing up in my hometown.

When family members see you are really interested in family history, you can become a recipient of cherished family heirlooms. My dad's cousin gave me a Hickerson Family Bible. The first entry was John Hickerson b. in the year 1800. He is one of my direct ancestors and the Bible has a suede binding...CHOICE! One of my mom's mother's step-sister's gave me a beautiful spinning wheel and a yarn counter from the 1830's. They were purchased and used by a direct ancestor of mine also and brought to CA from PA in a covered wagon. I have been so blessed.

Greg: You and Sue are so cute. Your grandmother was watching closely. Those Yolo County Fair Trackors on display were always so fun to see. The flower displays and Exhibited patio gardens were great. Something I always enjoyed. The Yolo County Fair was a family affair, a very clean summer adventure.

David Swigert - What a coincidence. My grandparents also lived across the street from Beamer School where I attended 2-6 grades. They lived at 23 N. College. The house looks very different now, nicely upgraded, and there is still a cottage in the back, which was where my grandfathers two teenaged step-sons lived. Beamer School looks surprisingly the same with the brick classroom buildings predominating and the large adjacent playground with baseball diamonds. Happy memories from when I wore an octopus costume, that my mother made from scratch, for Halloween. I won 1st or 2nd prize (?) and got my picture in the Daily Democrat.

Since Beamer School and Sunset Avenue were mentioned, I feel as though it is time for me to weigh in. We first moved to 505 Sunset Avenue, a duplex at the corner of Sunset and N College, when I was 2, then we moved to the middle of the block to a newly-built house at 515 Sunset in 1958 (my son and his family live there now). Terry (1961), Don (1966), and Debbie (1969) Jones lived at 507 Sunset, and Jeanne Vaughn (1964) lived at 511 Sunset (before they moved to Vaughnlanda Gardens west of Woodland). We walked across the street to play on the jungle gym (my brother Dave (1962) broke his arm falling off), tag football, basketball, baseball, and to run through the fog of mosquito spray in the summer. The Jones kids knew when to head home when their father, Roy, did his recognizable whistle. Beamer School was built in 1830, before California became a state (1850), and before Woodland was settled (1853). My father, Harold Douglass, was principal from 1944-1958, then transitioned to principal of the newly created Lee Senior Elementary School. I was in the first 7th grade class at Lee. Beamer School now has portable buildings along Sunset Avenue, and the entire playground is fenced.

Mike Miller, you asked about the Yolo County Fair. I have not been in a few years, but this is what I have learned: this year, for the first time, the fair will cover two weekends, the dates being August 7-9 and 12-16 (closed August 10 and 11). Admission is still free, parking is $10. Theme is "Hog August Nights", and there are carnival rides, pig races, corgi races, chihuahua races, demolition derby, country music concerts, other live entertainment on multiple stages, exhibits, demonstrations, Mr and Mrs Yolo County Bodybuilding competition, livestock shows, and all of your favorite fair food items, including Holy Rosay tacos. You should check their website for more detailed information on times and locations.

Hi Ann,

I was wondering what was the school you mentioned beeing established in 1830? The only history of Beamer school that I could find is as follows:

Beamer School—now Beamer Park Elementary at 525 Beamer Street—began as a neighborhood K–8 school in 1930. Its history is closely tied to the Beamer Park neighborhood, developed on the former Richard and Rebecca Beamer homestead.

1930: Original Beamer Park School opened with eight classrooms for grades 3–6, along Beamer Street where today’s playground is.
1940: A wing for grades 7–8 was added.
1950–51: A primary-school annex, then a gymnasium/cafeteria, were built.
1956: The school served kindergarten through eighth grade, with about 725 students.
Later decades: The junior-high grades moved to Lee Junior High; the original building was eventually demolished. The school office and library were built in 1975.
