You're absolutely right "shop lifting days". Dad had a rack of ties and a table of old shoes right out in front and he said "If anybody wants to steal any of this, let them."  The closer to the door you got the better eye we kept on things, but everything was despensible.

That cherry tree was a pain in late spring and summer when I had to mow the lawn. Cherry pits and over ripe cherries every where

RE:  The house on the SW corner of College and Oak.   I spoke wth Joe Montoya today about this house.  He lived in the house to the rear in 61-63 when he was first married.   He talked with the lady numerous times who owned the house but never did see her.  Her husband was a 'drunk' who spent most of his time at the Pastime Club on First St.  She moved out of the house prior to Joe's residence in the rear house.  She owned a resort at the base of Mount Shasta.  The house was unoccupied from the time she moved out, about 1959-60 until it was leveled in the late 60s. The house was full of expensive 'things' but most were stolen over the years by burglars.  He was never in the house but looked in the windows several times when he was doing the yardwork and said that the interior was immaculate.   The front door was always unlocked but he was afraid to enter.  Sorry, no more info concerning the 'haunted house'.

RE: Sidewalk Days.  I recall one year during these days, Charlie Goggans had the band of Bob Alves, Steve Fisher and John Isgreen set up in front on the sidewalk for three days.  Main Street was packed those three days listening to them play surf music.  John hated to play Wipeout as he had to do the drum solo at the beginning.  Where is John now?

Don, I think John is still living up at Lake Tahoe and has for many many years. He was in carpentry the last I heard. Also, I believe the woman that lived in the " Haunted house" was named Sim Hietala, that's if the address was 608 College St., which I think it was.

Jim, I remember the Holy R fire.  I was in town with my mom and watched the fire from what is now the Nugget.  There was a lot of concern that everyone got out safely with the second story.  Several months ago there was some posts on the forum about this subject.  Guess one of the Boren twins ('63) got so scared she went home without telling anyone, and was unaccounted for.  You might look back and see what people were saying pre reunion on the subject.

I remember as a kid, walking by the Stag. I remember the stale beer/cigarette smell wafting through the front door. A few years back when I was in Woodland, I met an old friend (John Davis -65') for a drink there. The perfect dive bar. What a trip. Is The Stag still there?

I remember the old bowling alley. They used human pin setters.

Also, anybody remember the Yolo County Fair? We would go there the week before when the Carny's would set up the rides and booths. What a strange lot. But nothing like the smell of the Fair. My Dad owned Hoover Tractor and would set up his Allis Chalmers tractors for display. They would hand out bright orange hats and yard sticks. Remember the rodeo at the fair? I recall Myron Floren (lawrence welk show) performing at the fair one year. My mom and her friends were all so excited.

JoAnn

I remember the fire at the school as the summertime(or I don't think I would have seen it). My dad was a volunteer fireman at the time and I think he gave a ride or I wouldn't have seen it.

My dad worked for PG&E and they donated labor for the lights at Camerena and Clark Fields for night baseball.

Wow...Myron Floren....that must have been "wunnerful".  They had some great musicians on that show.

Craig R. Don, and Tim:  Yes, I remember playing for Sidewalk Days with Bob Alves, Steve Fisher and Bruce Dumars, Gene Boyd and Keith Meng.  That must have been after Johnny Isgreen played with the band.  We were then known as "The Dynamics". The north side of the street, facing south, was pretty hot.  Charlie would pay us by giving us maybe $5.00 and then having us pick matching outfits.  I seem to remember yellow short sleeve shirts with white trim.  We wore them again later at the opening of Value Giant.

Jim, see post #154.  I do believe Holy R. school burned while classes were in session.  Jo Ann

I, too, remember when the old H.R. School burned, only I think we called it the Academy.  The lane behind the old Stop and Shop is stilled called Academy Lane.

Was there a Woolworths on the north side of Main Street about 1st or 2nd Streets?  I seem to remember going to a 5 and dime store there with my grandfather; he would buy reading glasses and let me choose something as well.

Yes, the Stag is still there.  I remember going into the Stag with my father when I was young.  He would sit me on the counter.  There was one elderly gentleman who would give me a cigar band for  a "ring".  They also had the best milkshakes in town.  Mom and I would wait in the car while Dad would go in and get them.  Later in life, Dad would go there in the mornings for coffee and a sweet roll.

Regarding the drills in the '50s.  I remember we had to hide under our desks.  Seems so useless, in light of what we now know about radiation.

Wally,   What year was this photo taken?

Thank you Sherry....much appreciated!!

Don, I'm almost 100% positive that the photo was taken in 1965.  Attached you'll find two posters to support that.

Listen Cheryl, we've had this talk...stop laughing!!!

Wally, I would be willing to bet, no one was arrested that night, I'm pretty sure I was there. How times have changed !

Janice, I remember hiding under our desks too but I think that was for earthquake drills.  Could have been for both.  I wonder if they still practice that for earthquakes.

Wally,  I think it was the summer of 64 that I recall John playing drums at Sidewalk Days.  It was just the three of them, Alves, Fisher and John.   John kept his drums in the garage at the rear of the house and was rebuilding a motorcycle.  Danny Parrish spent a lot of time at John's and we would prod John to play the drums.

Wally  What the heck is a costume change by the band & who would care?

Walter J. "Wally" Summ (1967)

I couldn't tell you JoAnn...too far back.  I do remember a "Beatles" group called RAIN that came to the Woodland Opera House.  They did costume changes to show how the Fab Four transformed over the years.  They were great!

Wally, just wanted to say what an exceptional job you are doing with the memories, pictures, music trivia.....particularly fine job since you are on the missing classmates list. You really are good but then we all knew that.   Cindy
