Thank you Robert C.for printing Dode's(our nickname for Dorothy) obit. I believe Dode taught 3

generations of children in Woodland. During her break during the day she would walk

up to the Elms Gift Shop and work a few hours for her good friend Terry Terhune.

On another note, does anyone remember Herb's Lake in Knights Landing?

Lovely picture of Dorothy Demaria, plus the lovley write up on her life.  She was a very classy lady and College Street will always hold her name.  I can still see her walking down the street.  She was a good friend of Sylvia Terhune and her husband, of whom I babysat for their children while I was in High School.   Thank you Robert for putting this on the forum.

Concert Craig!  Hands down, The Dead with Bob Dylan at Autzen Stadium early 90's.  Why?  The only concert I have ever left where the music still continued after 6 hours. But, it was time to go home!  Got my monies worth on that one.  The Dead came to Eugene often because of the Ken Kesey connection and the famous Oregon Countey Fair.

Tom, not much for rock but some good ones I attended were James Brown and The Famous Flames, Thelonious Monk, Joe Tex, Otis Redding, Johnnie Mathis, Fats Domino, Percy Sledge, Big Moma Thornton, Johnnie Cash and others.  Many good entertainers in the 60's.

Best concerts i have seen were Boz Scaggs, Pink Floyd, Bocelli, Pavoratti, Kenny Rogers, Willie Nelson, Dione Warwick, Peter Paul and Mary, Many Winterland concerts, but the best and most fun i ever had was carting ZZTop around in my car from the Frog Pond to Dennys, in the bay area. They had not become real famous yet, but they were sure alot of fun.  They were really cool. Huey Lewis used to be at the Paladium all the time in the city. Gordon Lightfoot, and many more as i said. Transiberian Orchrestra excellent.

I remember everyone drag racing out at the end of West Street. Out by the orchard which is now houses. I remember all of us going to the Vacaville drag races too. Then there was the race track over in Sacramento.

Manuel Arteche did work for many of the guys with their show cars down in the bay area also. I know of one Chevy he did for my husband and his friend. He was well know through out the circut. Some of the classic car owners down here our age also knew of Manuels work.

Tuni, just went to see Boz Scaggs 2 weeks ago here in Eugene.  We had lots of snow down and about 1/3 of the seats were empty because people didn't want to venture out with the ice & poor road conditions.  Good concert.  He played some old songs like "Lend me a Dime" but much of the set was from his new album Memphis.  More electric. He still has it after all these years!  I think it is best when artists extend themselves and don't just repeat the same old material.  We have seen Willie many times here in Eugene.  The best was at Mac Court the old Uni of Oregon basketball venue.  He just about brought down the place.  It was 1980 and they did something that would never happen today.  At the end of the concert a huge flag was dropped behind the stage.  Stars & Bars!

JoAnn,talking about back to back my daughter and I saw the Rolling Stones at Pac Bell  and

Paul McCartney at Arco within two days of each other.  It was nice to share that weekend

together as she had not seen either of them live before. I say Elvis in '74 at Tahoe.

 Elvis.....one of my favorites.

Craig, I went to the Filmore with Bob Gordon, Larry Fernandez, my sister and her

husband Doug Mengali. We went to see Procol Harem and Pink Floyd. I got sick

One last blast, way to much communication for me.. when it comes to music my favorites

are jazz and the big band sound. When you hear a 15 piece big band orchestra it is

heaven.  bye.

I have to throw in my groups that I had the privelage of seeing live.  All were at the Memorial Auditorium in Sacto.  The first one was the Stones on their first American tour-before their big hits.  I went with Jim Keihn, Noel Williams, and Bob Cushing if my memory serves me correct.  We were 4 rows from the stage and I can still see Mick twirling his jacket as he went back and forth across the stage while singing "Walkin' The Dog".  We then went to their 2nd show where Keith electrocuted himself on the mike and it stopped the show.  Our seats were quite a bit farther away that time as they had knocked out several of their hits by then.  I also got to see The Animals.  They shone a lone red light on Eric Burden as he sang "House of the Rising Sun".  It was awesome!  Got to see the 4 Seasons too-they were great.  Last but not least-I saw The Beach Boys 4 times including their Christmas Show featuring "Little Saint Nick".  Thanks you guys and gals for bringing the concerts up.  It brought back some great memories!

Remember all the concerts at Memorial Auditorium. The Stones were great. Quite a few at Winterland. One of the best concerts-Bob Dylan and the Band in Oakland. We had a table for 25 at the seafood restaurant University and I80 afterward. A question for Wally, who was the fiddle player who lived in Woodland that played for Asleep at Wheel?

Dave, Dan & I saw Sha Na Na at Chico in about '74.  Held the concert in the main gym.  Were you there?  Very crazy performers.

What did the Dead call themselves in the early days?  Saw them in North Beach when they were a bar band.  1968 or 69.

Been going to concerts since the Beach Boys at Memorial in about '63 and continue to this day. My favorite was James Brown at Memorial... still love the funk and soul..first time this white boy saw the whole auditorium up and dancing! Jo Ann..I went to U of O and was at the Dead/Dylan concert you mentioned (with our baby girl in our arms) Our favorite venue these days is Sierra Nevada Brewey here in Chico. Favorite acts coming up are Paul Thorn and Tommy Castro. also will see Winton Marsalis at th CSUC soon. Let the good times keep rolling...Music for the soul!

One night at the Peppermint Lounge in New York saw Lionel Hampton and his Band downstairs and upstairs saw Joey Dee and the Starliters, with Jimi Hendrix playing guitar.  Late the same night went to the village and saw Bob Dylan and also the Clancy Brothers.  The Clancy Brothers were kin to one of my ship mates and we saw them a lot. They were very popular in the Irish community.  When no one was on stage a guy would read.  A few years later I found out it was Wavy Gravy. When Bob Dylan was not on stage he would be out on the side walk and in the street in his shades playing his guitar.  A few nights later we saw the same ones and then a few blocks over at the something Spot saw Thelonious Monk.

In the late 60s I did see Elvis Presley in person at the Lake.  What a beautiful performer he was, good looking way beyond his pictures and very mannerly to his audience.  That was a show I will never forget.  His customs were full full of jewels.  I also saw Johnny Cash, great music also.

Tom, did you see the Clancy Brothers in Ireland?  How about The Makem & Spain Brothers or the Clancy Legacy?

JoAnn-Yes I was there to see Sha Na Na.  I was lucky enough to have a buddy who had a key to every door at Chico State.  Myself and a few buddies sat in the Sports Pressbox to watch them-great veiw.  Maybe you remember Flumeburger?  Jim Davis was the owner and he was my friend who had the keys.

Paul-I went to see Booker T and the MG's at Sierra Nevada on New Years Eve several years ago.  They had lost a little of their talent-but it was still fun.

Paul L., So the year after the Dead/Dylan concert at Autzen Bob Dylan was back to play a show at the Bell Memorial on campus a small venue for Dylan  Tickets were impossible to get & I didn't get to go.  Heard the next day that after his concert he wandered downtown and ended up playing in a bar until closing.  That would have been a trip to experience.  No way of knowing that would happen but I have always felt like I missed out!  Enjoyed seeing Maryann in Sept.  Are you still in Eugene?

Like all of you I've seen the Stones, Dylan, Santana, Hendix etc. etc. But I think you can't beat the Eagles and Billy Joel live in concert. Randy Hansen is a Jimi Hendrix Tribute band, seen him In Sacto. around 1974 at the Crabshaw Corners night club. (21st and J st.) He was awesome back then. He's still doing it today. He lives in Seattle. Last year in Tucson we saw Cheech and Chong with War and Tower of Power. Too cool.

To Jim Kiehn,

The Asleep At The Wheel fiddle players name was Bill Mabry.  He lived in Woodland for many years and I believe was a checker at the Safeway market when it was located on the corner of California and Main.  He lived on the corner of Mariposa and Beamer but taught fiddle at his mother in laws house on Jimeno Lane (between the Tuckers and Charlie Goggans).  Bill was inducted into the California's Country Music Hall of Fame.  He won a grammy and had three other nominations.  When Bill left town to tour with Asleep At The Wheel, he gave me all of his students.  He also played with the group...the Ace In The Hole Band.

He died in Austin, Texas on March 17, 1997 at the age of 65....geez!!!  They had a service for him there on March 21.  They then transported him to Woodland for another service on March 23.  He was buried in the Capay Cemetery.   RIP my friend.

PS:  Bill also had a part in the 1972 movie "Oklahoma Crude" starring Faye Dunaway and George C. Scott.  He played a broke farmer who could fiddle. Bill was paid about $54.00 for every three days of "extra" work. Sounds like he could go broke doing that!!

Gotta chime in.  Saw Janis Joplin twice.  First time at Memorial Auditorium.  Her opening act was Chicago.  The second time was at Cal Expo.  Sat on cement floor.  Could get high just breathing the smoke-filled air.  Sat about 50 feet from where Joplin was standing.  Bottle of Southern Comfort nearby.  Also saw Ferranti and Teischer (spelling?) at Memorial Auditorium.  Different kind of music.  Went to school with Bobby McFerrin ("Don't Worry, Be Happy").  Fun person to be around.  His father, Robert McFerrin, Sr., was a world-renown opera singer and I had him one year for my voice coach.  Music of all kinds feeds the soul.  Looking forward to going to New York with the Woodland Chamber Singers to sing in Carnegie Hall in a couple of weeks.  A  youthful fantasy come true!

To Tom Stewart,

Regarding the "hair length" controversy....this picture appeared in the Daily Demo on March 24th, 1966.  Sophomores Steve Canevari, Keith Meng and Ron Black refused to cut their "long" hair.  They claimed that their band would suffer if they  gave up their "long hair gimmick". They were members of the popular band, "The Partesians."
