Don, thank you for my mistake in my note on the Gable Mansion. Here is the Gibson Mansion.   So many good mansions to recall in Woodland.  I do not know much about the Gibson Mansion, but know it has some great  history also.

Thank you Craig for the historical view of Gibson Ranch.  Maybe that is why there were deer statues around Woodland's historical buildings and homes. The pieces of history becoming more clear.

Great picture of the Gibson Mansion up close.  Thanks Craig.

I remember Gibson Road when it was just a two lane country road, and that home was very rundown.  I also was in the first grade at Dingle, when everyone who would be attending Gibson School walked from Dingle School to Gibson School.  I had wonderful teachers at Gibson School:  Mrs. Fitz, Mrs. Haines, Mrs. Allen, Mrs. Stringfellow, and Mrs. Corbin.  My music lessons at Dingle were with Mr. Friday and I had to put my instrument in my bicycle basket and ride back to Dingle for them.  Because Gibson School only went to fifth grade at that time, we returned to Dingle for sixth grade and then onto Lee for junior high.

I grew up on Gibson Road when it was two lanes. There were fields across the street and the crops rotated
I enjoyed watching the hay baler and playing in the wheat field. In late August the tomatoes after the harvest that were left on the vines were really stinky. I also remember the mosquito abatement spraying the irrigation ditches, and the crop dusters. Winder what chemicals we were exposed to in those days.

When Gibson School was built, the kindergarten room was not finished, we went to school in the basement of the old girls gym at the high school. Lots of memories.

I am so glad to see someone else mention going to kindergarten in the basement of the girls gym.  I also have memories of going there but really couldn't believe it was true, and why.  I moved to Gibson Rd in about 1950. I remember the fields across the street and riding my bike out to the irrigation ditch to catch little frogs ("fig tree falls".  I remember tomato harvesters traveling on Gibson Rd.  I went to all grades at Dingle and rode my bike there, even in the rain!

My Mother, Gwendolyn Eve, taught kindergarten at the newly built kindergarten section of Gibson School.  I remember the parking lot had not been finished. Gibson Street was only two lanes, fields all around.  I would walk from the High School to get a ride home with Mother at the kindergarten classroom.  The olden days for sure. Mother also taught a 4th grade class at Gibson.

Thank you Craig, she was a hard worker, even worked at nights at the school,  1964 was when I graduated, so I was going to Sacramento City College at this time.  But remember on school breaks going to her classroom or picking her up when I was home.

Marilyn. I remember you and your brother, down the street from me. I think Richieds and Robinsons were next door to you. I remember one Halloween I, along with some other neighborhood friends, went trick or treat. Your mom and dad did a great job of making a spooky house that year. Scared me good!

My kindergarten teacher was Miss McAmis (sp?). Theresa, I had your mom for 4th grade as well. Who was the gentleman who also taught there? My memory banks are not cooperating. We were so fortunate to have such good teachers.

Hey Janice!I also have great memories of Gibson Rd. and also the tomato trucks and mosquito abatement spray and playing in the fields across the street. Last time I was in Woodland, I knocked on the door of our old house and was invited in for a tour...nostalgic but also sad to see how it was changed, especially the back yard.

The last time I was in Woodpile, I too, went by the house where I grew up. I knocked on the door and asked if I could come in and look around. They slammed the door in my face.  After all these years, my parents still won't let me in the house

Hi, Paul. Yes, we had great times growing up. I think of you and the rest of the family with fond memories.

In regards to the gentleman teacher at Gibson. I think it was John Davis? Anyone else remember? And I think I was mistaken, Theresa. I think I had your mom in 5th grade, and Mr. Davis in 4th? I still have all my report cards and and class pictures, so I probably dig them out for a walk down memory lane.

Nice to know who Mother taught.  I know she had an assignment of the Roman Empire and brought the note books home to grade.  I so enjoyed seeing all the collections of that assignment, learning the columns.  It was Mr. Davis as the other teacher.  Good memories.  I think she also had Hidie Handsome. Easy days.

Janice - yes you are right about the Robinsons and Richeids living next door. (I can even remember when that was a vacant lot we played in before their house was built.) Next door to them was the Willis's and then the Masons. Remember Frances, Nancy and Brenda?  Down the street was the Chiulis house (spelling?).  And on the other side of us was  Dr. O'hara and daughter Liz.

Marilyn, I do remember the Willis and Mason families. The girls were a bit older than me and I thought they were the coolest! Bea Willis remarried ( her last name was Pemberthy) and she and my mom became close in the 1980s. They were on the Senior bowling league.

This is directed towards the 3 classmates who, at last month's reunion, ask me why I don't post a more recent photo of myself.  This photo is from 1998. Why would I post a recent photo which would show me 25 years later?  25 years ago, I looked 25 years younger than I really am. Kinda like celebrities having plastic surgery to keep their youthful looks.  Fun reunion.  Best of health to all.

Craig, you're right. I had a problem with the system. My apologies. I don't post often, so not familiar with all the ins and outs. Don, did not know about the edit option. Thank you. Do you know how to use that option?

The Stroll Through History 2023 was just the best.  The weather was wonderful.  The Gable Mansion was beyond words with each completely decorated room historically correct.  Amazing walk through.  Each of the other homes were also a historical experience.  My sister JoAnne and my cousin Lori enjoyed the day.  MoJoe's was a refreshing spot for lunch.  Also passed a few Woodland High School classmates.  Saw Marilee Damsen which offered a great friendship exchange.  Classic Cars were so wonderful to see.  Thanks for the event presented by all.

In Loving Memory of Ronald J. Harrison

Ron J. Harrison, a lifelong resident of the Woodland community, passed away unexpectedly on October 17, 2023, in Sacramento. Ron was born in 1944 to Richard and Eleta Harrison of Woodland. He was a 1963 graduate of the Woodland High School. In 1964 he joined the United States Army, becoming a very proud member of the 101st Screaming Eagles paratrooper division based out of Fort Campbell, Kentucky. In 1968 Ron married the love of his life, Janet Lewey. They were married for 34 years. Ron loved the great outdoors. He loved to fish, hunt, crab, and clam. He spent many happy hours at Dillon Beach, or up in the mountains camping, enjoying the open blue sky and fresh air. Ron loved to cook and could be quite the gourmet. Ron was beloved not just by family, but by lifelong friends, and neighbors too. His youthful happy spirit, funny jokes, witty sense of humor, and passionate "political debates" will be deeply missed. Ron is survived by his two adult children Barbra and Jason (Woodland), favorite son-in-law Ramon Sosa, brother Richard Harrison (Woodland), sister Janet Stanley (Woodland), brother-in-law Doug Lewey and wife Chris (Zamora), sister-in-law Patty Towse Harrison (Capay), granddaughter Samantha Caraballo (Colorado), two great-grandchildren, best friend and beloved "partner in crime" Frank Lucchesi, as well as nieces, nephews, and cousins. His companion of many years, Sharon Zinsli, also survives him. Ron was preceded in death by his wife Janet Lewey Harrison, brother David Harrison, sister-in-law Lucy Harrison, and brother-in-law Dayton Stanley. Our Dad was a very passionate supporter of the United States Military. Donations in Ron's memory can be made to the following: American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Home for Our Troops, or any other military branch. A memorial service will be scheduled at a later time. Internment will be private.

For those that knew Mike Blank (1966) but didn't catch the 'In Memory' posting, he passed away Oct 14th.  He had a distinguished career, devoted to helping others initially through VISTA, then the Peace Corps, then the California Rural Legal Assistance office in San Luis Obispo.  I always had great respect for Mike and felt lucky to call him my friend.

May he rest in peace.
