I found this postcard on eBay. . Holy Rosary Academy, Woodland California. For elementary, I went to this school. It burned down when I was in the 3rd grade, 1953. This picture was taken of the Northwest corner, behind the main building, that burned, you can just barely see the "annex" that did not burn, we continued to have classes there until the six grade

What was built on that site after it burned down.

In 1953, I was 6.  I don't remember seeing the school before it burned but I do remember driving down Main St. and seeing the buildings that remained.  The fire pretty much destroyed the front building entirely.  It seemed so far away from Main.  But your picture looks like it was sitting up close to Main St. It's funny how large things look when you're a child and then when you look at the same thing when you're an adult it shrinks compared to what you remember.  The property was sold to a mall developer.  I think a Safeway market was built on the south side of the property and a JC Penney was in the front portion of the property with several other small businesses in between.  Boy that was a long time ago.

After the Holy Rosary burned down a shopping center was built.  At the time it housed

JC Penneys and many other outlets.  It is across the street from the Nugget Market. I

too was at Holy Rosary when it burned. Rather  a frightening day.

Aileen.....Safeway was I believe further down west Main st. and Stop-N-Shop was the grocery store in the Shopping Center near Lincoln Ave.     After High School I worked there as a Box Boy then Journeyman Clerk....Ernie Chiulos was the Manager....I Do remember the school riding my bike on Main St.....Vagely ...There was a Thrify Store...Donut Shop....and a Dry Cleaner next to Stop-N-Shop........

My memory, is that we continued class in the part that did not burn for 2 or 3 years (I know the fire was when I was in the third grade and I can remember 6th grade still at the old school). It took time to build the new school on California Street. I can remember picking up pieces of broken stain glass windows from the building that burned - can you imagine in today's "safe world", letting little kids play around a burned down building :-)

Yes, it was a JC Penny that was the magnet store in that shopping center, that building is still there, not sure if it is vacant or ?

The old school was close to Main Street and the house that was on the corner, just to the East of the school was that gorgeous Victorian with the pretty iron fence and the Cast Iron Deer in the yard, remember that :-)

Between the house and the school was the Chevrolet dealer. I think they called it Midland Chevrolet. Greg you might remember ?

Greg, the house on the corner of Cleveland, next to the school, was the Richie house. (now Bank of the West)The fence around it is now in front of the Gibson Museum and those animals on the front lawn were taken by students at UCD. They did find some of them.  The school was a large building. It had three stories, I believe. My cousin lived in Grimes and was one of the many young women who boarded there.

Danny, like that you have James Dean looking over your shoulder.  Must be nice to have your own man cave.

My dad helped build the JC Penneys Shopping Center.  I remember it also having a jewelry store, a little dress shop and, of course, the Woolworth's.  Stopped there to have a banana split with friends one day after school.  It melted faster than I could eat it.  Quite messy. :-D  We often walked through there on our way home from Harriet Lee Senior Elementary School.  I always thought that was such a long name for a school and who ever heard of a Senior Elementary School.

Greg:  Thanks for the historical picture of the Holy Rosary School.  I remember it just as you presented.  I do remember the iron fence and the wonderful deer out in front.  The shopping center came with Stop n Shop, Woolworth's, Thrifty's, and JC Penny's.  Not always the best of places.  Things changed so quickly.  Stop n Shop had the green stamps for a lot of interesting items upstairs.  Woolworth's had sundaes for .25 cents, a pet shop, and a lot of household items, and hair supplies.  Wonder what caused the fire at Holy Rosary, or if any one knows?

Hi Theresa & Elvis

I can't remember if anyone ever knew how the fire started - I know we had other pix of the school, this is the first time the pic was taken from this perspective that showed the annex (I think :-) )

I can't remember the Chevy dealer you talked about. I'll see if I can find an address for them. Speaking of cool old buildings, do you have any pix of Cranstons from the inside, or the basement.

The Holy Rosary fire started in the cupola or the dome on top of the main buildling.
As I remember it was an electrical malfunction that started it.  But that was a long time ago.

Barbara, think you are right about Holy Rosary burning because of an electrical problem.  Remember my parents saying that.  Thank you for the recall.  I do remember Midland Chev being around that area before moving down passed Orick Oil and the Woodland Vet on Main Street.
