Greg:  Thanks for the historical picture of the Holy Rosary School.  I remember it just as you presented.  I do remember the iron fence and the wonderful deer out in front.  The shopping center came with Stop n Shop, Woolworth's, Thrifty's, and JC Penny's.  Not always the best of places.  Things changed so quickly.  Stop n Shop had the green stamps for a lot of interesting items upstairs.  Woolworth's had sundaes for .25 cents, a pet shop, and a lot of household items, and hair supplies.  Wonder what caused the fire at Holy Rosary, or if any one knows?

Hi Theresa & Elvis

I can't remember if anyone ever knew how the fire started - I know we had other pix of the school, this is the first time the pic was taken from this perspective that showed the annex (I think :-) )

I can't remember the Chevy dealer you talked about. I'll see if I can find an address for them. Speaking of cool old buildings, do you have any pix of Cranstons from the inside, or the basement.

The Holy Rosary fire started in the cupola or the dome on top of the main buildling.
As I remember it was an electrical malfunction that started it.  But that was a long time ago.

Barbara, think you are right about Holy Rosary burning because of an electrical problem.  Remember my parents saying that.  Thank you for the recall.  I do remember Midland Chev being around that area before moving down passed Orick Oil and the Woodland Vet on Main Street.

Greg I wish I had some pics of the old Cranstons. I departed in 1988 all the old pics were still on the wall, including the ones of the original store where the Hong Kong was when we were in school. I think all or some were donated to the historical society. To bad we didn't all have cameras in our pockets like today. I remember taking a customer to the basement and he looked at the rafters and told me almost the year it was built. I asked how he knew that, because I knew he was from out of town. He told me that there hasn't been beams that big that were clear of knot holes scene that time.

Theresa I  remember people talking and wondering why Midland Chevy moved so far out of town. Boy look at us now. I'm probably not the only one that would like to go back there. (Only for a short time)

From left, Phil Chess, Muddy Waters, Little Walter and Bo Diddley. Chess Records, the independent label Mr. Chess co-founded, was known for recruiting black singers who had migrated from the South.

Robert - I'm voting the Conservative Platform. Supreme Court Justices must be appointed who will uphold the Constitution; we cannot risk the safety of Americans by allowing more 'unknown' immigrants into our country (the FBI Director admitted that the US cannot properly vet these refugees), as well as the added burden to our national debt.  We must first care for our homeless and vets, and employ fellow Americans.  I'm pro-life and cannot stomach how babies are being torn apart in a mother's womb up to and through the 9th month.  (Why aren't C-Sections performed for those in later trimesters for the 1% with health risks to the mother?) I could go on and on....but I won't. Suffice it to say that our freedom of religion and speech must be preserved.  If Hillary Clinton is elected, America ()and our freedoms as we know it will be gone.  If you're undecided, why not choose the conservative platform?  If you're not happy in four years, you have the opportunity to vote change....

Elvis:  Dad had a 1950 Chevy Belair, so sweet.  I loved that car.  We went to Midland Chevy oftain and they had a lovely big showroom.  It is not as grand at the new location at all.  I know when Dad had to sell his 1950 Belair he was just totally depressed.  That was his dream car for sure!!!

Theresa Eve (1964)

Dan:  You are so right!  My grandfather came out from Indiana (a carpenter) and my uncle (Glenn Fessel a carpenter also) and Father all together built the three homes there on North McKinley.  Great foundations you will never see today, those houses will stand forever.  They are right next to Clark's Field.  ( I remember when there were just fields around and West Street had big walnut trees down the road.) Those homes were great in the times, but new owners are not giving them the daily attention as my family did.  Very sad to drive down that street now, which I have done and leave very depressed.  Mother had lovely roses out front with crepe myrtles and a yard which was kept up each week, and lace curtains in the front window; I have to stop, way too sad.

Dan you are right about the neighbors.  Kay Gunter was right behind us to the left side and did have the pool.  Kay was runner up along with Kara Danielson (both lovely blonds) in the 1962 Sugar Queen Contest, and Mary was crowned Queen.  Kay was always so sweet and attractive.  But, here is the major story about that pool.  It was a hot afternoon, I believe on a Saturday.  We were in the backyard and Dad was fixing the Barbecue.  A terrible scream came from the pool, I believe it was Kays' Mother or Aunt.  Crying, "She is in the pool I cannot get her!"  It was a little girl about 2 years old in the pool, face down.  Dad, who was a Scout Leader and aways very athletic, jumped that 5 foot fence in one leap!  He jumped into the pool and got that baby out and started CPR!  He saved that little girl's life.  When Dr. Morrison came to the sight, he said, if Dad had not gotten in to that sweet baby, she would have died.  I just remember Dad jumping that fence when he heard that scream.  I could not believe my eyes he was like the fastest superman alive.  That October the family brought the little girl to our door for trick or treat, and said to Dad, "This is the baby girl you saved! We cannot thank you enough."  Now that is a story to remember.   It proved to me that I had one strong Dad who could do almost anything!  Days on 6 North MckInley, Woodland, California.

Thersa...I do remember that ...That was Kay's Brother daughter...They were down from Kansas...that where Kay and her brother Scott live before coming to California.....the scream...ambulance...I believe the Morrison lived on N. Mckinley....I delivered the Daily Democrat to them....Do you remember the Fishers who originally bought that home?????   I still remember Doctors made house calls........

Dan:  I kind of remember the Fisher Construction, but we bought from Mr. Read; who originall started the homes and lived in the Beamer home before moving and I think Fisher took over.  I still remember that pool story like yesterday.  So it was Kay's brother's daughter who was saved, nice to know.  It was a very immediate event with a lot of action on that day!!!  Yes, doctor Morrison lived down on the end of North McKinley in a pink and gray home.  I don't think we ate much that night, so upset.  Sweetest little girl ever!!!  Sometimes if there is only one moment you recall that makes your Dad a hero, you just hold it forever!  So I do.   How many people would ever know that story, only a very few, thank you.  I remember Kay and spoke with her on one 1962 Class Reunion.  She passed the following year.  I always said, so glad I made it a point to speak with her, if only for a moment, lovely person and alway a beauty.

Theresa.....It is funny how memories bounce back after 52 years graduating and I left Woodland in 1982.after retiring from a Medical retirement from the Police Dept....I noticed a lot of changes while on the Police Dept....not to my liking......Change around the 80's from City Council and the way the Police Dept. was to be ran...but those days when I was 10 or 13 on Frost Drive still returns.....since moving to Bakersfield,,I only have been to Woodland 3 times after I left for my dad's funeral and occassionally to Hot Rod Runs there.......I got lost last year...people not that friendly....many think they built Woodland...when they came 15 -20 years ago as investors thinking they did this...yes they did ...change the image ....I mention how we had it...they laugh...the group I came with are mostly retired Police officers and know how we had  it back then....some of the Police Officer we met were cool, about it .....but others...College Boys we call them...knew it all and we were Dinosaurs .........But memories keep me going...music the same with me...of course...Bakersfield has many that went to High School in the 50's 60's stayed here...two high schools....the Bakersfield High and East High...Bakersfield High the oldest 1900 like the old WHS...they retro fittied it to standards...they have some of the original classrooms  in use with the Oak class room doors and smell...aaaaw that brought back memories...they were smart in Bakersfield...kept the High school...did not tear it down like the Woodland Investors (Alleged)...Many of the kids Transfer to BHS...waiting list every year...The likes.... Frank Gifford went there 1937...Pro Football Player...New York Giants and others...BHS has tons of Championship Games...I have talk to many 50's 60's Grads at the football games ...they have the same language as we had...talk.....and it is nice to know so many stayed in the town they graduated from.......aaaaaaw Memories!
