Dan: as to 'whoever I am': I was in your brother Don's class; grew up in Zamora. Don's wife Shirley and I are long-time acquaintances. I'm a Buck Owens fan from my time at Fresno State, and like the WoolGrowers Restaurant in B'sfield. Guess we all get to know each other better.

Looks like these posts have veered in a little bit different direction -- WHEW! Though Vern should get a prize for best summation. Thanks, Craig, for the kind words about our 35th (I think) reunion at my barn. There's a perfect example of our different opinions, tho: after that event, our classmate Dean Pearson  (R.I.P.) was ringing up my groceries at the Nugget, and I asked him how he liked the party. He could NOT stop bashing it: terrible location, band, etc. and wished we'd go back to the Elks Club. All I could say was "you need to get on the committee for the next one". Sadly, he died before that.  SO: does anyone remember a field trip they took 'back in the day?' I'll start. Mr. (Ad) Hefner took the Latin, and maybe Spanish, classes to the Orpheum in S.F. for the scandal-clouded "Cleopatra" when I was a freshman. What a treat!

Vern, cute comic strip!  Actually, Dan, golf can involve water....it's nice to look at, but you don't want to get to close to it!  lol

Dan and Janet, I'm also familiar with country music and Buck Owens. My dad played steel guitar in a western band and played with the likes of Hank Williams. He still loved to play up to the time of his death a couple of years ago.  Although I never liked country music, I like it better now. As a side note, my given name is Sharon Raye (Bailey), which sounds pretty country, aye?  I hated the name growing up, especially being called by both names together and have always gone by Sherry, even today.  However, maybe when I'm in the 80's I'll start using it. :) (Nothing personal to those with the name, for me its more the sound of both names used together).

I used to live in the high desert in CA before moving to MN. I took a lot of shopping trips over to Bakersfield.  And, as a member of Toastmasters International, I attended various training sessions there.  :)

Speaking of bald eagles, my husband and I toured Alaska for two weeks this past summer, by land, sea, helicopter and train.  We had a wonderful time enjoying the beauty and pristine landscape of that great state.  Of course, we saw a multitude of bald eagles.  You're right, Don, they are quite a sight to behold!

In 2006 I was fortunate to be able to fly the photo/video plane out of Nome, AK, for the once-every-decade walrus population survey by the US govt. On bad weather days we'd roam around Nome with our cameras, and I have some pretty nice images on my computer of wildlife there. Of birds, I guess the McKay's Bunting is a good one to get, and those birds would congregate just outside of the Forest Service building where we stayed. Also got nice shots of musk oxen, Arctic foxes, and from my plane walruses, seals, beluga whales, and bowhead whales. It was a very interesting time, but also a sad one as my friends in the other airplane with infrared sensors ended up in Cook's Inlet outside of Anchorage and still haven't been found, 11 years later.

Yeah. Skagit River Valley in Western Washington, and Lake Coeur d'Alene, Idaho just down the road from Spokane are two bald eagle hot spots. While working Coast Guard contracts out of Seattle, I spent many days in Kodiak, Valdez, and Cordova Alaska and I can tell you the bald eagles are everywhere up there, like crows in a corn field. If you are ever inclined to take a cruise to Alaska, don't miss Sitka...prettiest little town you'll ever see. And when the king salmon are running, it is simply jaw dropping. They come in by the hundreds, big 30-40 lb. beauties leaping and splashing. Don't bother with a rod and real, just bring a big net.

Vern :

Incase you missed it  I  hit the like button on your post. Now all I have to do is learn how to play golf  ? ?

Janet:

Speaking of dances and good times. I remember the Cornball. Absolutely the best dance I've been to. Does anyone else remember that ? Is the barn still there  ? Is it time for another Cornball  !

Robert (Bob) Haskins Gray    April 30, 1930 - Jan. 10, 2017

Robert (Bob) Haskins Gray of Woodland passed away peacefully at the age of 86, after a three year battle with Parkinson's and dementia, at St. John's Memory Unit, with his daughter by his side.

Robert is survived by his daughter, Shelly (Terry) and grandson, Allen; he leaves behind his brother, Don ( Joyce).

He is preceded in death by parents, Dr. Earl and Marjorie Gray; his wife, Barbara Gray and sister, Deborah Gray.

Robert met the love of his life, Barbara Fortna, in Woodland at a New Year's Eve Party. After a two year courtship they married on June 4, 1955. Robert lived in Woodland all his life except for while going to school at Colorado State and a brief stint when he served in the US Army where he was stationed at Fort Huachuca near Tucson. Upon his return to Woodland, Robert became a science teacher for the Woodland Unified School District, where he taught 7th grade science at Lee Junior High for 31 years, 1959 - 1960, "Lee Memories".

Robert was an avid hunter of quail, dove, pheasant, duck, and geese. Robert and Barbara loved to fly fish and spent most, if not all, their summers doing just that in West Yellowstone, MT. When their grandson was old enough he joined them on these summer adventures. Their love for fly fishing even took them to New Zealand for six weeks. Since he was into fly fishing Robert became proficient at fly tying.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Yolo Hospice, National Park Foundation, Yolo Basin Foundation, or to in his name.

Sorry Craig. Dust in the wind...all we are is dust in the wind. Ants, cockroaches, fish, cattle, humans...all just a figment of some robots imagination. Only robots are allowed to merge with the ultimate. Imaginary beings such as us are just dust in the wind. YOU'RE FIRED! Now, go outside and play. - Grasshopper.

JUST A NOTE ABOUT CHURCH...

I once was the candle lighter at the Methodist Church over by the Court House.  High bell tower over the church was a stereo turntable where we played the sound of "bells" on Sunday mornings.  Being the devoted, righteous, and serious kid I was, I snuck up to the bell tower one Saturday and put a Beatles Album on the turntable for ALL of Woodland to enjoy.  Funny thing was, no one ever said anything about it!  I guess people didn't know from where the music was coming, or just didn't care. I wanna hold your hand, I wanna be your man, and it's really, really been a hard day's night!

I was part of a part of the Methodist Church, but never truly knew Jesus, that came during my "hippie" drug days much later.

Sad to see that the original Woodland Hiddleson Pool will vanish into a park.  Boy, what memories of good summer fun, swimming lessons, all the swim team boys (so cute), and bike rides to the pool and A&W for a treat after a swim.  And of course, Mr. Gordon always there. .

02/02/17 10:11 AM #3354

Dan Ree (Ree) (1964)

Eve...wasn't that called the Municple Pool?     If so...it was where we went every summer...I think it was 10 cent to get in....they gave you a wire basket to put your clothes in and there was a safety pin attached to put on your swim trunks and the pin had a number to get your basket back with your clothes....It seems everything great thing goes to a Park or Parking lot...........

And I still remember being at that pool, and Bill Freeman would get on that high dive, and everyone stopped what they were doing to watch... he was good!
