Robert (Bob) Jerome Sternes Aug. 10, 1927 - May 3, 2017
Bob was born in Fresno, CA, on Aug. 10, 1927, to Arthur and Vivian Sternes. He attended Oroville High School until enlisting in the U.S. Navy, where he served in WWII. Bob began his vocational journey in transportation, farming, and real estate investments. He retired in the early 1990's and sold Tri Valley Inc. (transportation and tomato grading/dispatch), but kept Sternes Farms.

John F. Weber (Bud) May 13, 1922 - May 10, 2017
Bud was born in Ruthton, MN on May 13, 1922. Bud graduated from Ruthton High School and continued to receive an honorable discharge from the Navy after returning from duty in North Africa after WWII. Bud is survived by his wife, Betty Jane Weber; son, Lelan John (Sheryl) Weber.

Donald (Don) Gordon Plank 1927 - April 13, 2017
Donald (Don) Gordon Plank, 89, of Woodland, passed away on Thursday, April 13, after a long battle with cancer. He was born on Oct. 26, 1927 in Woodland to Donald and Isabel Plank, and was a 4th generation resident.
Don was a graduate of Woodland High School and entered the Navy in 1944. He served in Kwajalein in the Marshall Islands. When he returned home, he went into business with his father as an electronics technician, which he continued until his retirement in the early 1980's.
Walter Brooks Martin Aug. 12, 1923 - April 12, 2017
Walter was born Aug. 12, 1923 in Pennsylvania. He was a longtime resident of Woodland, having worked as a teacher and school administrator in the Esparto Schools. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII and stationed overseas.

Thomas Arthur Purtell Oct. 13, 1927 - March 29, 2017
Tom was born in Rochester, NY Oct. 13, 1927. He moved to Burbank, CA with his family in 1942; served in the Navy during World War II; attended UC Santa Barbara and Hastings College of Law; and settled in Woodland, in 1957, with his wife Pat Purtell, to whom he was married for 63 years.
William (Bill) G. Botelli 1923 - 2017
Born in 1923 in Bryte, CA, attended Woodland High School. He became a Blacksmith for the Southern Pacific Railroad in Sacramento, where he worked for 21 years with the exception of four years military service.
A US Citizen and veteran of World War II, Bill enlisted at the age of 20, in 1943. Bill served as a fireman assigned to protecting a maps war room utilized by then General Eisenhower and his staff. http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/dailydemocrat/
Edward "Lalo" Martinez 1923 - March 18, 2017
He was a Veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He spoke proudly of his time in the service and what it meant to serve his country. He was also a boxer while serving in the Corps, claiming to win all of his bouts and receiving special privileges for his boxing skills. Edward Ambrose Trautt Colonel U.S. Air Force (Ret.) April 29, 1915 - Feb. 17, 2017
Edward was born in Akron, IA to parents John James and Margaret Anna (Arbes) Trautt. In high school, World War II seemed imminent, and three weeks after graduation he enlisted as a private in the Wisconsin National Guard. The Guard was ordered to Federal Active Duty on Oct. 15, 1940, and his unit from Superior, WI reported to Camp Beauregard Alexandria, LA, the start of his military career.
After serving his first one-year tour of duty, Edward reenlisted in the Army Air Corps on Oct. 25, 1941 for another three years. In that second tour of duty, he initially attended Aircraft Mechanics School at Keesler Air Field, Biloxi, MI. In February 1942, Edward was selected to attend Army Air Corps Officers Candidate School, in Miami Beach, FL, and graduated on May 11, 1942, with orders to report to Chanute Air Field, for a 30 day OJT for Command and administrative assignments. Upon completion of that training, he reported to Lincoln, Nebraska Air Field for assignment of Squadron Adjutant. Some months later, he volunteered for overseas duty and served for two years in the China, Burma, India (CBI) Asiatic Pacific Campaign from January 1944 to February 1946.
After the end of WWII, he served in France from February 1946 to April 1947. He subsequently served overseas in Korea from February 1951 to March 1952 and Germany from August 1955 to September 1958. Edward's military duty started as company cook, then in order of assignments, served as Sq. Adjutant, Supply Squadron Commander, Base Supply Officer, Base Material Officer, and Base Logistics Officer. For the last five years of military service, he served in the Air Force as Commander of Aircraft Maintenance - Supply Group.
His military awards included an Army commendation Medal and Air Force Commendation Medal and 13 other medals and service ribbons. Twice he was awarded the Department of the Air Force commendatory achievement award for "Outstanding Performance of Supply Officer Duties".
After 26 years of military service, he retired in the grade of Colonel, U.S. Air Force, on Nov. 1, 1966, at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, TX. Edward was a life member of the VFW, Post 6949, Davis, and the American Legion, Post 77, Woodland, where, in 2009-10, at age 95, he served as Post Commander and was honored for being the oldest active American Legion Post Commander in the U.S.A. His last military award was bestowed on June 28, 2015, by Assemblyman Bill Dodd, who presented Edward with the "Veteran of the Year" award for his district.
In 1968, when he was hired full time as a health inspector by the Yolo County Health Department, in Woodland. He retired from that job, on May 1, 1980, at the age of 65. Edward and Ludmila lived in Yolo County for the past 48 years, 18 years in Woodland, almost 30 years in and in West Sacramento.
After his second retirement, Edward wrote and self-published his memoirs for his family. Later, he published his book, "Proud to Serve", which chronicles his life, emphasizing his childhood and military service. He updated his book effective June 1, 2016, at the age of 101 while recovering from pneumonia. Leroy L. Leonard - Oct. 3, 1927 - Feb. 11, 2017
Leroy was born to Freida Moedinger and Louie Leonard. Leroy graduated from Woodland High School in 1945. Following graduation, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps serving until his honorable discharge in 1947. Upon returning home he entered into farming and cattle ranching retiring from farming in 1991. Leroy was a third generation farmer in Yolo County. Merrill Henrietta Cowan Bell Jan. 9, 1920 - Feb. 3, 2017
She was born Jan. 9, 1920 to Alicia and Henry Cowan in Chowchilla, CA. She attended schools in Chowchilla, Madera, and Turlock. During World War II she worked at McClellan Air Force Base. After the war, she worked as a Beautician at the Woodland Hotel Beauty Shop, which later because of Leroy's. She married Alvin "Art" Bell. In 1960, she went to work at Kordite, later Mobil Chemical where she was known as the Uno champion and was affectionately known as "Mother". Jesse Salazar Sept. 4, 1924 - Jan. 4, 2017
Jesse Salazar, 92, of Sacramento, passed away Jan. 4 in Sacramento. Mr. Salazar was a native of Woodland, born on Sept. 4, 1924. He was a communications specialist for the Marie Corps in the Pacific Theater during WWII. A graveside service at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery in Dixon. Mariano Mendez - Jan. 29, 1924 - Jan. 13, 2017
Mariano is a veteran of the Marine Corps, Fourth Division, honorably discharged with several medals including a Purple Heart and a Gold Star (in lieu of a second purple medal). He served with distinction in WWII with "The Fighting Four" seeing combat in Roi Nanur, Saipan, Tinian and Iwo Jima. Interment at St. Joseph's Cemetery. Neal D. Randolph June 6, 1921 - Jan. 30, 2017
Neal attendedWoodland schools graduating from Woodland High School with the class of 1939.
Neal left to serve his country during WWII in Sept. 1942 from Hawthorne, NV where he had been working at the Pacific Fleet Ammunitions Depot as a civilian employee. He first served in the ground forces of the Air Force but volunteered to transfer to the Army during the Battle of the Bulge in Belgium and was sent overseas. He was in one major battle for Central Europe and was awarded a Battle Star for that engagement. Neal returned to Woodland after serving 42 months in the service and entered into the automobile service station business with his father, Cliff Randolph.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by McNary's Chapel of Woodland. A celebration of life will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 15, at 1 p.m., at Yolo Fliers Club. In lieu of flowers, donations to The Shriners Hospital, Sacramento in Neal's memory are appreciated. Joseph Keehn Dec. 21, 1923 - Jan. 30, 2017
Joe was a Woodland native, born Dec. 21, 1923 to John and Bertha Abele Keehn. He was born in his great grandmother's home situated at the corner of West and Court Streets. He graduated from Woodland High School in 1942. During WWII he served in the Merchant Marines. Returning to Woodland, he worked as a carpenter for Keehn, Keehn & Lucchesi, and several other contractors.
