Wow, Don! Can I take you to Vegas? lol You got the remaining #2 spot with "I Can't Help Myself (or Sugar Pie Honey Bunch) By the Four Tops
What I find fun is that many of the groups we grew up with are now playing at local fairs and other venues with some of the original band members. I have caught many of their performances, the Beach Boys, Four Tops, etc., etc.. I applaud them for having the music still in them!
Joel....I would have been scrreaming with the rest! I love the Beatles (not the drugs). I even toured Liverpool when I was vacationing in England. It was an awesome tour, saw where the ideas came from for many of their songs, Strawberry Fields, Abbey Road, etc. Also, saw the homes where they grew up. I have seen the performance of LOVE by Cirque de Soleil in Vegas and would go again. I used to go to Beatlemania here in Mn where they had Beatles look alikes and performing bands but they stopped it a couple of years ago. I enjoy and recently my husband and I saw the Bronx Waunderers....a new Vegas act on the rise. They were really good!
We could continue talking music/songs, like our favorites and why they were meaningful to us if anyone is interested. I love hearing songs that put me right back where I first heard them! It's funny how some songs I didn't really understamd the lyrics til now....and some are a bit shocking! lol
Here's a screenshot of the list of Billboard Magazine's Top 100 for the year 1965 that I used:.
How about favorite singer/groups from the 60s. Mine is Midnight Confessions, Temptation Eyes and I'd Wait a Million Years by The Grass Roots led by the late, great Rob Grill and Warren Entner. I met Rob Grill at a Giants-Dodgers game at Candlestick Park in 1970. He was a Dodger fan and Rob and Warren Entner sat directly in front of me. Great stories and a great guy.
How many WHS folks were at the Dec. 3, 1965 Stones concert in Sacramento when Keith Richards hit the mike with an ungrounded guitar? Was almost electrocuted but lived on & on & on to play another day. Scary moment in rock history and it shut down the show. I think they were only in to their 2nd or 3rd song. The following year they remembered how the folks in Sacramento got a short concert and played for a long time.
I recall seeing that Stones October 1963 at Sacramento Memorial Auditorium. The opening act was - The Supremes! "Where Did Our Love Go" shot up to #1 while they were in Sacto. And, boy, did they give the performance of their lives!
Hi JoAnn, I was there....stage right, balcony. Yes, they had played very few songs. I thought it was an ungrounded microphone, but not sure. I just remember Richards starting to sing and putting his mouth up to the mike. All of a sudden, there was a bright flash of an arc and Keith was instantly laid out on the stage. The show was immediately stopped.
My car was parked on "I" Street, east of the Memorial Auditorium. By the time we got in my car and started driving west, the paramedics were bringing Keith out of the northeast door of the audition. We saw him being loaded into an ambulance and drivin away. Something we will never forget, right?
Let's see...it's hard to narrow down to groups/singers because there weren't that many I didn't like. However.....Favs were The Beatles, Simon & Garfunkle, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Sam Cooke, and the Supremes, to name a few.
Anyone remember these fav songs from the year 1960? Walking to New Orleans (Fats Domino) Cathy's Clown & Let it be Me (Everly Bros) I'm Sorry (Brenda Lee) Only the Lonely (Roy Orbison)
I remember hearing about Keith Richards....didn't rumor have it initially to be drug/heart attack related? You know how rumors go...
One sad story in music history was later in the mid 1980's when Marvin Gaye was shot & killed by his father. I loved his music...Sexual Healing...let's Get It On...he always thought he could be as big in the music industry as Michael Jackson...but he was gone too early.....
After variations of use, changes in ownership and construction delays, the State Theatre will officially open to the public on June 30. The grand opening comes seven years after it closed due to the downward economy back in 2010 and nearly 80 years after it first opened. That summer the Council announced that the State Theatre would function as a Children’s Performing Arts Center and community events venue, to be operated by the Woodland Opera House through a lease agreement with the city.
Though slated for February, ground officially broke two months later on the 10-screen, 1,103-seat multiplex in April 2015. The grand opening was originally envisioned for the latter part of 2016, but construction delays stalled progress.
During the initial construction of the multiplex, the city undertook extensive street improvements in front of the theater, on Main Street between Elm and Cleveland, creating a gateway to downtown from the west. Palm trees frame the plaza area at the entrance and designers created a “pinch point” pedestrian crossing instead of a median, making the theater a focal point and aiding safety. All said and done the project cost around $10 million to complete — 100 times the original investment of theater developers George Mann and Morgan Walsh back in 1937 when the theater first opened.
A celebratory fundraising Preview Party Gala is scheduled for 5:30 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, June 28. Proceeds will benefit the Yolo Food Bank and First Friday Art and Music Walks hosted by the Historic Downtown Woodland Group. The sneak peek lands just two days after the State’s 80th anniversary.
The State opened to much fanfare on June 26, 1937. Theater developers George Mann and Morgan Walsh of San Francisco, according to the city’s Explore Historic Woodland, a compendium of historic homes and businesses within the city, invested $100,000. The building was designed by American master theater architect S. Charles Lee, with collaboration from William David, who oversaw the construction of the theater and was a noted theater designer.
“The exterior architecture was clean, uncluttered Streamline Moderne with neon banding covering the canopied entrance,” the book reported. “Rising above the canopy as a beacon to moviegoers stood a large bow-shaped marquee and a very tall neon-filled ‘State’ sign with cascading neon bands.”
According to the book, “for Woodlanders worn down by hard times and hungry for a little excitement, the arrival of the State created a discernable buzz in town. Combining top-notch architecture, neon art, and handcrafted interior murals with cutting edge theater technology, the State brought urban sophistication to rural Woodland.
“The auditorium featured stadium-style seating with no balcony and seated 999 people, making it the largest theater in Woodland,” the book added. “In praising the design, The Daily Democrat called the elegant theater ‘a symphony of modernistic architecture that is one of the most beautiful in northern California.”

Wow, great article about the renovated State Theater (a lot of good memories for many) and now more good memories will be made for others. Thanks Robert!
I found Phyllis on Classmates.com in the 1936 Ilex. She was quite an accomplished student and was an "A" honor roll student along with being the Sophomore treasurer and in her Junior year was a representative on the welfare committee. Welfare had a different meaning back then. The committee organized the functions and activities for all the school. She was also secretary of the Student Body and Editor of the Ilex. A popular phrase used in the school back then was, "Let Scarlett Do It"
She was 8 months shy of being 100 years old. RIP Phyllis You have earned it!
Jenny, I finally got the video of the Flash Mob Dance onto my computer; however, I can't upload it here? Looks like I can only load pix. So I am attaching a photo of our dancers. We are all aged to perfection :) (60-75+) from states all over the USA. Can you pick me out? We had a blast singing and dancing. :)
I recall the Stones concert a little differently. I remember sitting about eight rows from the front, next to Keith Kimura, can't recall who else we were with. It was closer to the end of the show than the beginning, they were starting to ramp up to their big hits and had just launched into "The Last Time." (I believe I recall this because that's my all-time fave song of theirs, other than "Sympathy for the Devil.") Keith suddenly dropped like a shot-----I think I actually heard him hit the stage-----Mick started towards him, and the curtain came down in a hurry. End of show, a real stunner.
Yes, I'm the 9th with the MN banner! 😉 Aileen, my friend Jill from TX (6'tall) is the 8th! The taller ladies take the back row....always! Lol If anyone is interested in seeing the video, just contact me on Facebook & I'll tag you.
I beg your pardon. I've never meant you so I didn't know how tall you are. I only had the beautiful picture you include in your messages. Looks like you guys had alot of fun.
I will neither be reporting obituaries nor making corrections and/or additions to obituaries posted to the WHS60’s website.
I also will no longer report information to our Veterans List i.e. name, military service, dates etc.
I am not able to dedicate the time and energy that I feel is necessary to properly administer these duties for the alumni website.
If you have an obituary you believe/feel needs posting for alum(i) or for a teacher or Yolo County resident of special interest or information about one of our Veterans, please contact GARY WEGENER on the website via Gary’s Classmate Profile page, or via the internet at gwegener4098@gmail.com
Gary administers the WHS60’s website and will continue to update the site and help you post information as needed.
I have enjoyed working with the WHS60’s website for these past 3 ½ years and will continue to be a member.
Robert, I hope you don't mind me posting the photo of you out of the 1965 Ilex. You have done such a great job in keeping us informed of past students of WHS by posting their obituarys, that I felt it appropiate that you get some recognition for your unselfish service. I along with many other classmates, have appreciated your kindness and have thanked you many times in our hearts. Thank you again Robert!
Aileen...no worries at all! The photo isn't clear of me so it's hard to make me out. My hair is longer now. The profile pix is 4 yrs old & I need a new one! My banner was the giveaway to the others, most likely. :)
Wow Robert! I remember you. What a handsome guy! Thanks for all you have done for WHS Alumni. Hope all is well with you! ☺
Robert...I too would like to add my thanks for all you have done. It is a big job and can take some serious time so it is your turn to get some well-needed relief. Enjoy those extra hours!
Robert, let me add my thanks for all you have done. I believe we have the same list of vets, i.e., that the flags on the profiles indicating military service match what you have. If in doubt, if you can send me a copy of your latest, I will square them up. Hope to 'see you around the forum'...
