Sorry Craig, I apologize...but you have to admit, you were just like a guy at a shooting range holding a bull's eye target!  I couldn't resist!

Oh Oh!...I just realized, I am now an open target in your sights. Be gentle... I am not in your same league.

I guess I should say something nice about you now. You were sure a cute little boy about 9 years old when I was over at Everett Parson house on Casa Linda in about 1958. You came over and said "Hi".  Everett and I were about 16.

While I'm on the subject of apologizing...which we should all do when we offend someone, I have got something to apologize for that I've been carrying around for 58 years which I have never revealed to anybody. Before I go any further, I want to make it perfectly clear that I have always held this person I offended in absolutely the highest of esteem. I had never talked with this person but I knew him as he was very popular in WHS. What I did was childish, immature, and a stupid prank. It seems like I often times did things then just to see if I could get away with it. Here goes:  In 1959, Eric Cowing, was running for Student Body President, which is Robert Cowings (1965) older brother. He had cut out paper cows with construction paper and had written on each of them, "VOTE FOR COWING".  I saw this as an opportunity to do something shocking. I removed one of cows pinned on the bulleton board in the main entrance and carefully removed portions of the cows udder and 3 of the cows teats making it look like a bull. I then repinned the bull in a position appearing to be  mounting one of the cows. I then just stood back to watch the reactions. It wasn't long before Paula Cruson and Eric Cowing came to the scene and immediately removed the bull. Paula and Eric both had a look of unbelief and shock as to who would do such a thing. My apologies go out to especially Eric, Paula, Robert, and to all of the classes of 1959 to 1962 who may have seen my art work. I apologize!

Elvis, I tried many times to get Eldon to follow in my shenanigans but he was straight as an arrow and wouldn't budge. Then he met Shelly Hawk and she kept him so busy he didn't have time to fool around with me.

Before it scrolls too far up, everybody go back and read Jean Duncan (Miller)'s post #5081. Thank you Jean. That is this site at it's best. You too, Vern. Your high school prank was udderly hilarious.

Vern, That is a typical high school prank. After all this years you showed everyone that you are a bigger man than most. Thank you, apologizing takes guts digging deep inside oneself and doing the right thing.

Following Vern's example, I'll fess up to a prank I and a few fellow students did our senior year.  We wee studying The Love Song of J Alfred Prufrock in Mr. Young's English class.  It felt like we'd been studying it for months and we were sick of it.  So our gang of pranksters collected some old clothes and stuffed them and made a man.  We made a sign to hang around its neck that said 'J Alfred Prufrock'. One dark night we hung poor Mr Prufrock in effigy in one of Mr. Young's trees.  Next time we met in that class, Mr. Young said 'I think it's time to start another book.'  No word was ever spoken about the incident.  :)

Since some folks are posting some of the memories that they have of Woodland, I thought I would share some of mine.  Hope I don't bore you.

Although I was born in Woodland at the old county hospital, I did not grow up in Woodland the first part of my childhood.  When I was very small my parents took me and my sister Celia to live with my grandparents in Mexico.

When we (my sister and I) were old enough to start school, we returned to California where my sister and I started school outside of Winters.  We started school at Buckeye Elementary.  It was a one room school house and we had kids from first grade to 8th grade attending.  Only one family from that school that I recall attended school in Woodland.  I remember Flip and Joe Carandall.

The next school that I attended was in Madison for one year before "graduating" to the school in Esparto. From Esparto we moved to the Wookland area when I was in the 7th or 8th grade.

Since we lived in the outkirts of Woodland I attended school at Willow Springs Elementary.  There I met a few kids that I would later see at WHS.  Some of the kids that I rememger from there are Mike Lee, Kathy McGillacudy (sp), Jerry Jiminez, the Betencourt kids and the Zuniga kids ( Butch, Patty, Loreta and Ted).

When my father finally bought a house in Woodland on 3rd and Cross street.  I then attended Harriet Lee where I reconnected with Bob Cantrell whom I had known from Esparto.  From what I understand Wilma Torres also went to school in Esparto but I do not remember her from Esparto.  Alvin Gersalia (sp) was another kid that I had met in Esparto.  I recall that Alvin and Willie (Francisco) Lopez were always getting into fights.  I reconnected with Alvin years after we graduated form WHS and he told me that he and Willie had ultimately burried the hatchet and became friends.

I recall walking to Harriet Lee from 708 3rd street when it was raining and getting to school very wet.  Bob Cantrell had to ride his bike to school and he would also be very wet.  Funny that I never thought about getting a raincoat.

I have many memories of WHS.  I will mention just a few, so as not to make this message too long.  I rememer French class Freshman year with Mr. Hefner and Connie Logue being in that class with me.  We had to learn skits that we then had to do in front of the rest of the class.  The skits came from a book that was meant for adults.  One phrase that I remember was "avez vous le cigarettes Americans?".  I think Ruth Linford was also in this class as was Bob Cantrell.  I became friends with Janeth Nishamura, June Sakata, Steve Takimoto, Ron Damsen, Maurice Richter, Bill Fong and John Armus. I rememmber playing football in the rain with these guys.

Bob Cantrell invited me to go fishing up at Lake Tahoe.  We didn't get to go fishing however because of rain but we did get to camp out.  Mike Murray was the only other person that ever invited me to stay overnight at his parents house.  I think the occasion was that we were going to try and walk/run 50 miles as part of president Kennedy's fitness program.  We didn't make it.  I think Manuel Arteche was one of only ones that made it.

Thanks Vern, Hope to meet you and your wife at the '62 reunion Sept. 16. Your posts are always a breath of fresh clean air.

So many great Woodlanders that we never hear from out there. They are busy working to make this place better for our grandkids and theirs.

See you in September.

I would like the opportunity to remeet people of Woodland after being away for close to 50 years. One class at a time is a lot of people to remember , Craig. I don't have your photographic memory.

Why don't you sign up and drop by to meet me. Love to meet you and your wife. It will be a good time for all Woodlanders. And it shows support for the classmates.

:)

Re message 5109.

Craig, not sure I understand your comment regarding Mike.  Are you saying that Mike Murray later completed the 50 mile hike?

I'll have to stop by your law office next time that I am in Woodland.  Should be in August.

Interesting comment about your client that Manuel (RIP) help out by giving him a job.

Miguel,

Shari West is looking into it. She went about 3 years ago. Says they have it every 10 years. Checking with Howard Burke, he is my fb friend.  He's in Sacramento with The Lord's House, 916.690.9227

Hope this helps. Have a great one.

I found this little Dept of Defense - Office of Civil Defense Booklet titled "FALLOUT PROTECTION" dated 1961 at the flea market this last weekend. Inside are pictured Fallout Shelters you coukld build in the backyard, basement, etc. Out of curiosity, do you remember your friends, your family, whatever, building such a facility in Woodland? Because Woodland was centered among Prime Targets - think Mather AFB, Beale AFB, Travis AFB, Mare Island, etc etc. I know of one built by the Joe Keehn Family that was a pretty complex affair. Are there others??

There was the start of one of these 2 doors from me on Viento Lane on the corner of Viento Lane and Buena Tierra at 1337 Viento Lane They dug the hole when I was about 7.  We used to play in it.  It was about 15' x 15' and 10' deep.  Don't think it was ever completed but the hole was there.  It had a top on it and an iron step ladder to get in.

I just came across a quote that I would like to share and also incorporate into my life.

"He who takes offense when no offense is intended is a fool, and he who takes offense when offense is intended is a greater fool."

                         Brigham Young

This is going to take some work on my part. That's ok...I'm an old hay bucker...I'm used to hard work.

What do you mean by that, Vern?  Are YOU talkin' to ME????

No offense Wally. Lol

Vern Larson (1960)

Craig…Thank you for your interest in the “quote.” I know the past several days I have been attempting to put the quote into practice in my life, and it has helped me avoid potential arguments.  As far as Wally’s reaction to the quote, he meant it to be completely humorous and to relieve possible tensions. Thank you Wally.

Regarding the rest of your comments, I am not as theologically knowledgeable as I should be, and I do not feel this is the place to discuss religious or political topics in depth. But to briefly answer your question, to the best of my limited knowledge, the only topic you put forth, that is factual, is that Brigham Young did have multiple wives, as did other highly respected members of the church back then. It was not taken lightly, and was entered into only with acceptance of the first wife, and then with sacred marital respect. The United States government deemed it illegal and the practice of polygamy was then discontinued by the church back in the late 1800’s. There have been splinter groups professing to be members of the church, but the church does not acknowledge them as members and in fact has excommunicated those who have tried to continue with the practice.  None of your other comments are accurate, but do have scriptural answers.  Which as I have stated, do not feel this is the place to discuss them. May I also thank you, Craig, for being so kind to me in the past with your comments. You are a good man!
