George Manthey (1967)
I was intrigued by Paul's observation about how much we have lived through (9/11, Vietnam War, Civil Rights, equal rights for women, fall of the Berlin Wall, JFK, RFK, MLKJr asasinations, space exploration, Hippies & Flower power, drug explosion, computers and the Internet). Paul mentioned that our group of friends were on the "nerdy" side--most likely that's still true--and I would be interested in hearing about how any of those events have infuenced your lives.
Sadly the Vietnam War had a huge impact as evidence by the number of classmates who died during that war. Certainly Vietnam and Watergate made me more cyncial about our elected officials.
During our senior year Paul, Robert Boughton, and I took our one day allowed for college exploration to visit San Francisco. After drivebys of USF and SFSU we spent the day exploring the city and happened upon The Haight/Ashbury District in its hey day. Truly we "weren't in Woodland anymore." I remember one "hippie" asking me if he could borrow my car. I had a sense that I would get it back--but probably not for a couple of weeks. I don't think I have ever more clearly understood that I had a very limited view of the world. That visit to the Haight increased my desire to know a world beyond California's Central Valley. Thank you, hippies!
Somehow I didn't get how the Civil Rights movement could have affected Woodland. As I think about our class I'm sure the majority were not white--but those of us in the college track certainly were nearly 100% white. At the time I didn't question how that could have happened--or even that it did. As an educator I've made changing that a mission.
And, of course, without computers and the internet I wouldn't be sharing these random thoughts with you--or hoping I might hear how those major events impacted you.
