WHS Alumni, A month ago, I almost put the message board in spam, but I decided with help from other classmates to bring the discussion up to a more mature level. Our generation has lived through some the most significant changes in history (9/11, Vietnam War, Civil Rights, equal rights for women, fall of the Berlin Wall, JFK asasination, space exploration, Hippies & Flower power, drug explosion, computers and the Internet). So I thought WHS alumni could share their experiences of years past high school graduation with others. Multiple positive feelings and knowledge can be  a result.

Didn't care for Queen Carroll, but I was a guy so I worried about Mr. Lacky.........I came to Woodland from Sacto in 59 and my 5th grade teacher was a Miss Cargo, don't remember the 6th Grade one.....Craig...remember, all the cancer stuff on your arm, "The Doc was saving your life", that's what they told me when I had some Melonoma taking off my left ear and all during the Radiation treatment (hope I spelled that right), seems sometimes they cut too much........I lost my primary saliva gland on the left side because of it  and the gland was healthy.......I believe it was pure and simple a case of Vivisection on his part......Other than that wishing the class of 67 a great 50th year reunion!

Dan, I mean no disrespect here but I think you are wrong about where Frosty lived. I think he lived in my rear view mirror on my "55" Ford. Every time I looked up there he was in it. Now Vern on the other hand knew him in a whole different way. I think everyone in WHS that had fun knew Frosty one way or another. Ahhhh good times and great people.

Vern Larson (1960)

Well I'm going to have to jump into the conservation in as much as we are talking about Frosty. I always admired Frosty..."from afar." It seemed as though I was always up to something that I shouldn't be doing and could be busted for, so I always tried to stay out of sight and out of mind. I ditched him one time when I was cruising by the high school and lite up my tires going across the painted section on College street between the main building and the gym. He came after me on his motercycle but I had a good head start and sped on down College and made a right turn on Pendegast or Craig and pulled into someones driveway and laid down in the seat. It worked because he drove right on by. I stayed down for several minutes and then drove off.

I think Craig and Elvis may have been referring to my confession which I had posted on my profile several years ago. I've encluded it on this post as it helps to describe my dealing with Frosty. I don't know if Frosty is still with us, but if he is, I would love to throw my arms around him and give him a big "man hug."

MY CONFESSION:
I don't know what the statute of limitations is on pranks, but over 50 years has elapsed, so I think I may be safe in confessing.
During lunch period at WHS, Delmer Frost (Frosty) of the WPD, was talking to a bunch of us guys in the parking lot. He was on his 3 wheeler Harley Davidson motorcycle.  I slipped up beside the motorcycle and removed one of the spark plug wires.  After a brief time of talking to us the bell rang for us to go to class.  He attempted to start (kick start) his motorcycle, but of course it wouldn't start. This was before electric starters on motorcycles.  You had to jump on a crank pedal with all your weight to turn the engine over to start it. We all had to leave to get to class.  When we came out of our gym class, Frosty and the motorcycle were gone. The word got around that he was going to pull us all into the police station for questioning until he found out who pulled the spark plug wire off.
I was really sweating it for a while. He never did...thanks Frosty...I owe you.  But you know, considering all the things we used to do, I think Frosty had about as much fun chasing us around Woodland as we did trying to get away. Circa 1959.

Elvis you are sooo right about Frosty.......Before I joined the PD...I had my 56 Chevy...I took out the 283 and installed new 327 ....two fours and a Muncy 4 speed.....Well...as it goes...Fred Broesh was in town on a sunny Saturday...and we met up at the Purity Parking lot....we decided to exchange cars...Fred had his yellow Corvette.....What did Fred do with my 56 as he left the parking lot.....lite it up on Main Street....i did the same with his Corvette........we were pulled over on Main....There was Officer Troxel...Glen Barton and Lee Constant.......Barton told me to open the hood of my 56 to inspect the engine...and asked where I got the engine and if I had a receipt...I said yes.....he measured the rim height from the street surface and determine that it was too low ....I was issued a citation.......I got back in Fred's Corvette...where Lee Constant..started his inspection....Fred's Corvette had a cracked windshield....as Constant was rubbing his finger on the crack.....I turned on the windshield wipers....Constant received a Finger cut...Blood every where...he asked me why I did that...I said you wanted to inspect the wipers if they worked....Fred got a Citation for several things....Barton told me to take the car home and fix before driving....Troxel was on the Motor then...so that night we came back to Purity Parking lot to cruise Main....as I was leaving ...I spotted Troxel on his Motor going the opposite direction....I went through the gears down main street...I saw two small red lights in my mirror four blocks to my rear...I got to Fifth Street and turned right and pulled in front of a Car at curb side and did the lying down the seat trick and stayed there..after approx 10 minutes I went south bound and went until I got to Walnut Street and went home.......Sunday ..Fred met me in Knights Landing and installed different front coil spring to bring the front of the car up...Troxel stopped me again Sunday and was ready to write me up ...but saw I took care of the problem...yes he questioned me if it was me Saturday...that ran from him...I denied it ...saying there is another 56..that is Silver.......LOL!

Craig......That Photo was when I was Directing Traffic at Main and Walnut....by the Standard Station....when  a Pepsi Truck..from I believed from Ebell's Bottling Co.....drove by and dumped half of their empty bottle all over the street..a big mess...Officer Campbell from the CHP came by and went after the Driver to issue a Ticket...The City was called out....but that photo was taken by Dan Trevor a employee of the Daily Democrat...who would come to all accidents etc...he had a scanner....I remember on a injury accident ...he was there...Officer Bludsworth was assisting directing traffic...well ....Trevor was poking the Camera in Bludsworth face .....and I over heard Bludsworth...tell Trevo if you do not want that camera put up your POO POO ( I cleaned that up...it's a family show here)....Trevor back up and approached me to ask what's his problem...I told him..." you are a pain in the Ass "........Officer Troxel saw him in the middle of the road getting in our way and told him to stand on the sidewalk or he would be arrested for interfering with an investigation...........Trevor was not liking that...but he knew we were serious........Yes the POSSE WENT THAT WAY.......LOL!

So wonderful to hear the story about you and Ms. Conger! When Garry and I married, 53 happy years ago we moved into Lincoln Manor Appartments and had several dinners with Ms. Conger and enjoyed our long evenings together! There will never be another one like her! Best Wishes!

Hi Dan, this is Ron Hooker. I do remember Frosty he stopped my brother and I on our bikes. On Gibson Road when it was a two-lane road. For criss-crossing back and forth across the lanes so he stopped us and gave us a scolding said do not do that

I was intrigued by Paul's observation about how much we have lived through (9/11, Vietnam War, Civil Rights, equal rights for women, fall of the Berlin Wall, JFK, RFK, MLKJr asasinations, space exploration, Hippies & Flower power, drug explosion, computers and the Internet). Paul mentioned that our group of friends were on the "nerdy" side--most likely that's still true--and I would be interested in hearing about how any of those events have infuenced your lives.

Sadly the Vietnam War had a huge impact as evidence by the number of classmates who died during that war. Certainly Vietnam and Watergate made me more cyncial about our elected officials.

During our senior year Paul, Robert Boughton, and I took our one day allowed for college exploration to visit San Francisco. After drivebys of USF and SFSU we spent the day exploring the city and happened upon The Haight/Ashbury District in its hey day. Truly we "weren't in Woodland anymore." I remember one "hippie" asking me if he could borrow my car.  I had a sense that I would get it back--but probably not for a couple of weeks. I don't think I have ever more clearly understood that I had a very limited view of the world. That visit to the Haight increased my desire to know a world beyond California's Central Valley. Thank you, hippies!

Somehow I didn't get how the Civil Rights movement could have affected Woodland. As I think about our class I'm sure the majority were not white--but those of us in the college track certainly were nearly 100% white. At the time I didn't question how that could have happened--or even that it did. As an educator I've made changing that a mission.

And, of course, without computers and the internet I wouldn't be sharing these random thoughts with you--or hoping I might hear how those major events impacted you.

George, In September 17th, PBS is going to start a 10 part, 18 hours documentary on the Vietnam War by Ken Burns.  It will be interesting to see the documentary to learn more about the Vietnam War than news reported back then. Luckily I had a college deferment, so I was not drafted into service  I've talked with my close Vietnamese  friends who immigrated from Vietnam, and they have extraordinary stories which I can share later . I read briefly about the PBS special , and we will hear from soldiers from both sides, and we will hear 120 songs that compliment the video. I remember Country Joe and the Fish "Woopee We're all Gonna Die!"

So there has been a lot going on here the last couple of pages. And a lot has been taken away from those pages. But the only comment I have is that I think Linda owes Craig an apology.

Mike Miller, I thank Linda for stopping Craig's derogatory comments about my posted picture. Linda also stood up for my successful treatment of prostate cancer when Craig flippantly compared it to a skin mole he had removed. So I thank Linda for her concern.

Ron Hooker...you were right about Officer Frost........I had to watch my P's and Q's...since living on the same street.....I remember running into his Pick up....Knocking his side mirror off...I thought...this is it...I knocked on his door...and gave him his mirror...he said...I should have put longer screws in....I looked at him and told him I was riding my bike and came to close to the truck....He said no problem...he will fix it...Boy that was a close on.....

My dear friends and classmates...please don't make me flex my superiority as being the upper classman on this website. wink   (Just kidding.)  But it really does sadden me to see some of the misunderstanding and unnecessary conflict we sometimes put ourselves through needlessly. sad  The rules on this site are perfectly plain and easy to understand. Let's all take a minute to reread them. They are at the top of the "message forum".  We'll all be glad we did.  A little kindness and forgivness goes a long way.

I enjoy reading all of the comments and life memories that we have spent a life time gathering. Share them with loving kindess and concern for others.  I will probably never have a chance to meet each one of you individually, but I can get to know you, through this web site.  My thanks and appreciation to those who have put this website together and maintain it. We all thank you.

Linda Lopez (1967)

Hi Vern,

If we have rules and don't use them then why have the rules in the first place.? Or are the rules so watered down that they are of no use.

A classmate has been offered but no one seems to care.

What is this site coming to, of no real value I guess, when good people leave like some have done. I've only been back nine months and good Classmates of 60s stated they are going because of no one standing and saying 'enough, stop it'.

I was going to push for more people in my class to signup but not now. Waste of time and energy.

It works when individual, like yourself, write their school stories or like Dan posting pics. That is what this site started for. Now it is a place where someone causes, makes fun of people, and daydreams.

Do we just stand and let that happen.? Why?

Linda Lopez LaBrie

Vern Larson (1960)

Linda, I am so sorry you and others have been hurt and offended. I think that probably 99% of the people who offend do not have that intent in mind. And the other 1% that do intend, are probably going through some tough times themselves and could use some tender love and forgiveness. We are all in this journey together, and can be of service and help to others, then at the blink of an eye, we can be the ones that need help ourselves. Please don't give up on us. We need you, and we all need one another. May we all strive to be a little kinder,  a little more forgiving, and thankful for what we have.

I again would like to express my thanks to those who have worked so hard to put this wonderful website together and maintain it. We appreciate all you have done and do. Thank you!

As I look back over my life I think what I miss most is the power, prestige, and authority I used to have over the citizens and streets of Woodland.  Here is a picture of me at the height of that power, serving on "Safety Patrol" at Beamer School.  LOL

08/20/17 08:26 AM #3851

Linda Lopez (1967)

Thank you, Vern for your wise and insightful words. It is , Paul that was offended and needs an appoulige given. I am just a friend and fellow classmate fed up with seeing the damage done.

Thanks Tom for your picture of times back. Lovely, even the streets looked so much better.

My pictures  my mom has saved but have yet to go through. Cathy Ditched gave me some that I am going to make hard copies of. We were Brownies. What fun going to the fairgrounds, spending the night, making a fire, talking all night, and being around good friends. What a life. Great to be back in Woodland.

Linda
