   Margaret "Peggy" Jean Blickle     Jan. 28, 1925 - Oct. 7, 2017

Margaret passed away peacefully at Woodland's Cottonwood Skilled Nursing Facility in the early morning hours on Oct. 7.

Peggy was born in Glendale, CA on Jan. 28, 1925, the second of two children born to Joseph F. and Margaret R. Holmes. The family moved to Woodland in 1926 to set up a family owned lumber store. She graduated from Woodland High School in 1942 and briefly attended classes at UC Davis (known as Cal Aggie) as well as the College of the Pacific. Her husband, Elwood Blickle, a native of Woodland, married Peggy in February 1945 after Elwood returned from Marine Corps duty in the South Pacific.

They raised their two boys in Woodland. Peggy lived her entire life in Woodland, becoming an accomplished homemaker, enjoyed gardening, played golf for years at Yolo Fliers Club, and was a life-long member of a local bridge club. She was an active member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church and volunteered for years at the Woodland Clinic. Peggy enjoyed traveling, visiting family cabins in Lake Tahoe, and spending time with family and friends.

Peggy is survived by her sons, Ron (Bonnie) Blickle (WHS 1963) and Rob (Kate) Blickle (WHS 1966); eight grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Elwood.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, Oct. 14 at 10 a.m., at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Second and Lincoln in Woodland. Private burial to follow. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Yolo Hospice.  Published in Daily Democrat on Oct. 11, 2017

I wasn't going to mention this but my mother, Clare, passed away in Woodland on October 9, two days after Peggy Blickle. Peggy was born exactly 5 months before my mother in 1925. They were both a couple of great Woodland gals. My condolences to my old friend, Rob Blickle. Sorry I missed the last reunion as I heard he was there. Craig, you had a good friend in Rob. I remember whenever you would pull one of your usual shenanigans, Rob would shake his head at you and snicker "Mahahay-field" in a tsk-tsk but amiable way. I'm going to try to make the next reunion. It depends on circumstances going on with my in-laws up here in Spokane. Shoot, I haven't seen my own siblings in a decade. Time for a trip to Woodland.

Gail Smith (Maxwell) (1964)

Hi Joel...you mentioned you lived in Spokane and I wonder if you could answer a question for me.  Our grandson had a tour of Western State University last week, which I believe is near Spokane.  I'm just wondering what the weather is like, especially in the winter.  Do you get a lot of snow?

Also, condolences to you on your mother's passing.

Stanley Carter (1968)

Tom Stewart....yes I remember going to the Sacramento Autorama. I started going in my senior year in high school. When I'm in Sacramento at the time it's being held I definitely go to it. I've been a car guy ever since high school. I become a car painter because of seeing beautiful custom paint jobs on cars and trucks. Yes I also cruised K, J and L Street in Sacramento that was a blast (American Graffiti style) so much fun and good memories. I finally bought a 1961 Buick LeSabre semi custom, Pearl white and lavender, purple metalflake top and scollops and panel paint. I love going to car shows and rod runs with it. It's dedicated to Ed "Big Daddy" Roth and Von Dutch. Keep crusin take care say hi to Carol.

Joel - Re: post #5539, I vote with you!  I'm so sorry to hear about your mom, I remember her well from the Methodist Church, she was a very nice lady.

Condolences to Monte McCray, Robbie Blickle and Jim Webber,  it doesn't matter how old you are, you always miss your parents and just wish you could pick up the phone with talk with them.

Vern, if you get that wrestling match arranged, I'll sell tickets!

Stanley, the Autorama still lives at Cal Expo, usually held on President's weekend, although now down to just 2 buildings.  One building is reserved for car clubs, and yes, there are still car clubs!

Vern Larson (1960)

My dear classmates, I would first like to offer my condolences to those who have recently lost loved ones. It is a time we can reflect on all of our good memories with them and with other family members and friends. Also for all those who have been effected by the recent fires, shootings, calamities, and other tragedies throughout the world, we give our thoughts, prayers, and offerings. In these times of grief and mourning, it is also a time we can count the many blessings we receive from our Heavenly Father.

Well Craig, I was kind of hoping I would get to wrestle you. With the conditions I set forth, you have to admit, the probability was pretty high. It has been a long time since I first saw you as a young boy of about 9 years old when you came over to Everett Parson's house on Casa Linda while he and I were out in the driveway talking. Everett and I were about 16 and you were a cute little kid who just wanted to say hi.

My "Tongue in Cheek" wrestling challenge, seemed to take hold. We have Charlotte's support, Patricia will pay "big time", Connie volunteered to sell tickets, and I think it would just be a fun time for all with the proceeds going to charity. Craig, I like your idea of oxygen tanks and we could all bring pillows to line the mat for a softer place to land.  Maybe we could get Paula Castles, a  retired nurse, to be on hand and Gary Wegener to be the referee.

I went down the recent posts and came up with a list of potential participants: Vern Larson, Craig Mayfield, Tom Stewart, Stanley Carter, Joel Childers, Robert Cowing, Paul Schattauer, Wally Summ, Don Murdock, Ernest Conger, Monte McCray, Dan Ree, Tony DeMaria, Bernard Rocksveld, Tony Moddesette, Miguel Michel, Donald Urain, Mike Miller, Steve Takimoto, John Michael Somero, Duwane Jackson, Greg Kareofelas, Elvis Kelley, Bill Means, Doyle Phillips, Eldon Larson, Tim Tucker, John Eaton, and George Mantley. This list is by no means complete and any other names you can think of, please feel free to do so. So guys...start pushing yourself away from the table and get out your old gym trunks and start getting in shape. This goes for you to girls...we could use some cheering on...get out your old pom poms, short skirts, and tennis shoes.

GO WOLVES!

HELP WITH EMERGENCY PREPARATION -

Luckily Yolo County is not experiencing the devastating fires and evacuations that so many of our neighboring counties currently are. But how would you know if there were fires approaching or evacuations ordered?

Law Enforcement, Fire and the Office of Emergency Services have multiple communication plans in place, but we need your help to be prepared. Please take a few moments and sign up for Nixle and Yolo Alerts.

1.  Nixle allows text messages directly to your phone based on zip code. It is only utilized for important public safety alerts. Simply text your zip code to 888777. You will receive a text message confirming your enrollment.

2.  FOR Yolo Alerts.

https://member.everbridge.net/index/453003085611271#/login

In the event a reverse 911 message is sent out, you would only receive that message on a home phone unless you have previously registered your cell phone and/or email address .

3.  Most emergency services keep social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, and Nextdoor updated in emergencies, HOWEVER it's easier for most people to check a text than to log on to a social media site.

NOTE: If you live out of state but have family member(s) in Yolo County, this may be a good way to keep aware and alert fir tgeir safety.

Vern, I take exception to your assumption that we need to push ourselves away from the table and get in shape. And for the gym trunks, they still fit, yes I kept them all these years and wear them on Halloween. Actually they are the ones I wore at Harriet Lee.

And another thing. What is with this sexist remark about the girls being cheerleaders. I am sure some could wrestle with the best of them.

Reminds me of the time Jenny Johnson and I were wrestlin' on the floor in her living room and her dad came home. I was asked to leave shortly after getting a stare from him that scared the bejeebees out of me.

Joel, sorry to here about your mom.

Jenny Johnson (Norman) (1966)

Mike - Ha!  I was winning or he would have done more than stare at you. :)  See, girls can wrestle too!

Gary Wegener (Wegener) (1966)

Robert, thanks for the emergency service notice signup info.  Nice to be able to include updates for where my kids live (earthquake prone bay area...).  Crazy times.  Interesting that the cell towers 'failed' in Santa Rosa fires.   I know the city switched from handheld radios for field supervisors, to cell phones 20 years ago; I always questioned their reliability in an emergency.  Wonder how many folks have a hardwired telephone line any more.  Good ole ma bell was dependable.

I am almost as old as Vern and still have an antique land line. AT&T is quietly trying to get rid of them, if you have a problem it takes over a week to get a technician and they charge 45$ to show and then depending on whats wrong (your stuff or theirs) it's more.  Whats going on around Napa and the wine country is terrifing, I think worse than the hurricanes.  We caught an outer band of Irma and had a very wide area power failure.  Lots of old trees in Atlanta.  We lost cell service, the internet and TV immediately but the antique still worked.  I have an automatic whole house generator so we didn't lose power.  We got cell service back in about two hours and the rest the next day.  I think a cell tower your cell can "see" must get power to work and the internet and TV require power to a repeater much nearer to you to work.  Progress.

When you are almost as old as Vern you never know when you might need an ambulance or a pizza.

Well it looks like after I finish with Craig, Paul will be my next opponent. I'm really going to have to pull out all the stops and get in shape! From the looks of Paul from his Junior photo, he could be quite formidable. (By the way Paul, I prefer pepperoni & mushroom)

I see we may have matches forming between Craig and Dan. (I got him first Dan.)

Also if we are lucky, we may have a return mixed match between Mike and Jenny. (I've got my money on Jenny)

GO WOLVES!

The fires in California are just so terrible.  Yes, the old landlines do keep on working, I  have mine and hope to keep it.  So sad to see the Napa Valley hit so hard.  It will take years to grow back all those lovely vines over the hills.  Prayers to all those people and families touched.

Did want to thank the 1962 Woodland High School Class Committee who put together the Class Reunion at the Woodland Hotel, September 16th.  It was a lovely evening shared.  Thank you all. Good Class, 1962.

David Hughes (1967)

Can someone help me remember? Was the tree at Fig Tree Falls really a fig tree?

10/14/17 02:48 PM #4097

Becky Knight (Tobitt) (1961)

For a Napa fire update. I live in Fairfield less than 10 miles from part of the Atlas Peak fire. We have been on "stand by evacuation", but that will probably be dropped soon. Depending on the winds we have either been perfectly clear or, like the last couple of nights, it's been so smokey that you can't see more than a few yards! The upper Green Valley, Suisun Valley, and Wooden Valley regions have been evacuated since Monday, mostly to keep the roads open and free of any traffic that would hamper the first responders. Napa and Sonoma counties have been devestated! The wine crush is winding down but approximately 16 wineries have been either partially or completely destroyed. Please keep the families who have lost their loved ones, their homes and livelihood and the first responders in your thoughts and prayers.

Don Murdoch (1962)

No fig tree.  Just a tree with no fruit.  But Twin Falls 1/4 mile to the west had 2 gates where water flowed over, hence the name Twin Falls.

10/14/17 04:20 PM #4099

Walter J. "Wally" Summ (1967)

Hi David,  I do remember the tree also.  However, since it has been about 60 years since I used to pedal out there, I will have to rely on Don's memory.  I thought that there was a fig tree there...hence, the name.  There were probably several trees along that ditch years ago.  I believe Joe and Fred Heidrick farmed the ground between County Road 98 and County Road 100 (East Street)  and south of Gibson Road in the days prior to the subdivisions...excluding of course the Gibson and Tredway properties.

There was another ditch that ran north and south at what is now McKinley Ave.  My mother told me that McKinley used to be referred as "Lover's Lane"!  Lover's Lane ran parallel to "Cemetery Avenue"..which is now called West Street.  OK, the history lesson is over for today...you are excused.  However, there WILL be a quiz tomorrow!!

Hi Becky,  I have friends on Green Valley Road, north of Rockville Road.  As of last night, they were still evacuated from their home.

10/14/17 04:51 PM #4100

Elvis Kelley (1962)

Hi Becky,  glad you're still safe and hope it stays that way. The aircraft 747, DC10 and smaller ones fly over my house on the way to the fires. I know they have saved ahave  lot of homes and lives. Too bad they couldn't have saved them all. I can't imagine that destruction. I saw the couple on the news that had been burned out a few years ago and now going through it again. They say everything is for a reason, but I can't see this one. Stay safe.

Guys the tree your talking about, I think was a cottonwood. But like Wally says it was 60 years ago. Maybe 100 years ago there was a fig tree there. I'd say ask Vern but this maybe before even him.

10/14/17 06:08 PM #4101

Walter J. "Wally" Summ (1967)

I think you got something there, Elvis.......let's ask "OLD" Vern !!!     Good one!!

Be careful though...don't set him off....he may want to take you to the mat!!!!

10/14/17 07:28 PM #4102

Elvis Kelley (1962)

Hell Wally I'm already on the mat, all he'd have to do is put a big toe on each shoulder and I would be pined.
