Joel,

My favorite Kung Fu episode was when Kane, as he did in most or all shows, kicked the living delights out of a cowboy.  As the cowboy lay on the ground, a second cowboy walked up and, pointing at the crumpled up cowboy,  said, "What happened to him"?.  Kane replied, "He does not know how to fall !!"

Joel - Ah so Grasshopper! You are wise beyond your years. Wax on, wax off...0h wait...that was a different movie. I tend to agree with you...maybe wrestling would be too exertive. Perhaps we could have “walker races” to the restroom and back. Anybody have any other suggestions as to what we could compete in?

I say shot put or piglet catching or maybe frog jumping? Just a thought or two. What do you say, Vern or Elvis?

Craig - Now Craig, don’t be twisting my words into something disrespectful.  Master Po used “Grasshopper” as an affectionate term when talking to young Caine.

Linda - Keep um coming Linda…we’ll figure out something.

Vern,
Way back when in Esparto, my cousins and myself use to in a fenced in choral take calves and run them, then catch their tails and hold on for dear life

Was thinking a muddy version of that. Lots of mud. :)

Craig - I can see the similiarities in your photos that 50 years has tried to change.  I think I would be able to pick you out in a crowded room by just using your football photo.

It seems that this forum has gotten quite negative and with all the rest of the negativity these days, I have decided to inscribe and withdraw my name. Dawn E. Samborsky, class of 1965.

Dee

Sorry I will not be able to make it to the 60's Sep 18 2018 reunion as I will be in Ft. Wayne preparing to fly the F-100 Super Sabre. Light the after burner!!!

Monte and Joel, I needed Vern's address so I could check on his wrestling ability so I asked Craig for help. He immediately went to the legal Lexis Nexis Database and to no avail so he surreptitiously contacted the FBI, to no avail so they contacted the CIA without results so they contacted the NSA to no avail so I contacted the IRS and told them that Vern had an illegal 401c(3) Tea Party assembly house and they immediately gave me the address. I flew down to San Diego to find out how fit and flexible Vern was and was directed over to the wrestling gym he runs. I hid out of sight and watched and it was amazing to see him so un-fit and pokey. I stepped out of hiding and asked him what he thought of the Wolves who are going to wrestle him and he quickly turned around, displayed his original first wrestling move and here is a picture of him and his coach down below.

It looks like he is currently very over weight and kind of like the Pillsbury Dough Boy who needs to be tickled on the stomach. He said that he would begin getting into “fighting” shape after Halloween and by September he would take on all comers at the 60's reunion.

Classmates - Just so you all know, this photo of Bill was taken just before he graduated from flight school. I don’t know if I could trust such a cute little guy with a baby face such as his with an F-100 Super Sabre. Maybe an RC model plane?

Dawn - I hope you will give us another chance. We need people like you to help keep us on the right track. I know things were getting pretty negative a while back, but I think we are trying to do better. I know you must have some interesting stories to tell and we would love to hear them.

Craig - When I make mistakes in life, which is often, I do my best to correct them and then strive to make them no more. It’s a never ending process.

Bill - If you can’t make it to the 60’s reunion, you should at least give us a flyby like Tom Cruise did in “Top Gun” as Maverick!

Charlotte - We are all still waiting for the travelogue on your epic trek in Spain last summer with your family.

Classmates - I know many of you are probably growing weary of the same peoples’ posting’s all the time. You can change all of that and I would like to encourage you all to let us know of some of the things in your life...your travels, hobbies, stories, or anything you would like to share. We want to hear from you.

GO WOLVES!

So my sister dropped off some of her stuff from a move the other day and in a box was her Ilex from 1963. This was great as I misplaced mine that same year. I think Mayfield ripped it off. Anyway I was perusing the pages and saw the two teachers who taught HOMEMAKING. Did anyone out there take HOMEMAKING. As I remember it was on the first floor of the old building. Just wonderin' what went on in there. Also speaking of HOMEMAKING, one of the classes I wished I had taken was auto shop.

Thank you Greg for the announcement about  wonderful Fats Domino. No one can play the piano like he could, without music.  Also loved, "On Blueberry Hill."  Bless him for what he  created and gave.  He never left New Orleans.

Dear classmates. I think my “tongue-in-cheek” wrestling challenge has failed to materialize, but I have another passion I would like to present. I have been mountain biking before mountain biking was a sport. I used to ride up and down Cache Creek with an old single speed bike with balloon tires. When I was about 12 my dad bought me a 3-speed English bike with skinny tires which I rode all over the County.  I wanted to ride it back to Utah to visit relatives but my parents wisely suggested it would not be a good idea at the time.

I would like to suggest we have some type of bicycling adventure while at our reunion. I realize Woodland is all flat land, but there are some beautiful hills West of Esparto that I’m sure we could find some trails to ride. Hopefully we have someone in our group who rides mountain bikes in Woodland or knows someone who does.  If not mountain bikes, road biking can be done anywhere and I’m sure we have members who ride road bikes in Woodland who can suggest some routes to ride. Anybody in?

This road biking photo was taken about 5 years ago at the tip of Point Loma in San Diego.

The mountain biking was taken recently on one of my favorite trails in San Diego.

Craig - No, I’m not afraid to wrestle Monte, or anybody else. I had a goal at WHS to be undefeated and maintained that goal…until I was defeated…and then changed my goal to a MORE important goal of, “win, lose, or draw, LEARN something from every match and become a BETTER wrestler.” That has helped me throughout ALL aspects of my life.

GO WOLVES!

Vern, do you ever ride up in Sweetwater Regional Park in Bonita? That's where we park our motorhome when we visit our son and his family. Great regional park!

Took a ride today to check out the fire damage to the Napa Valley. Going up through Wooden Valley you can see where the fire jumped from one side of the road to the other, leaving parts untouched. Because the fire was so hot, the underbrush was pretty much taken out but the tops of the trees are still green. Most of the damage is in the part where the road narrows and on the hills but an amazing number of the homes were saved. Taking Highway 128  that connects Napa to Winters, there is more damage, again on both sides of the road. Once you start down into the Napa Valley, there is a lot of devistation, mostly brush, manzanita and scrub oak and a couple of houses, but many were saved. Most of this area burned about 35 years ago and came back.

Then we drove from Napa to Calistoga via Silverado Trail. You could see where the fire had come down the hill to the road but there was a lot less damage than I expected. I had heard that Stag's Leap Winery had sustained a lot of damage but it looked untouched by the fire. The wineries up Soda Canyon did sustain some major damage. Calistoga and Saint Helena were busy but nothing like you would expect on a beautiful Saturday at the end of October. We finished our tour coming down back to Napa on Highway 29. Very little evidence of the fires from the road.

The parking lots of every winery and some of my favorite restaurants were only half full at best. I have heard that you can walk into the French Laundry without reservations and be served! It's the small businesses that are really hurting. Some of the employees have lost their homes but they are trying to make ends meet.

It is going to take years and a lot of effort before any sort of normal returns. We did not go over to the Sonoma area. We have talked to friends there and their nightmare is continueing. The fires are contained but not out. So if you have some time on your hands and would like a nice day trip, head over to the Napa Valley; they are open for business!

Carol lives in Woodland. I see her every now and then. We see each other at events in and around Yolo where we both grew up. She is still one of the nicest, sweetest persons that you will ever meet. I don't know if she has been on the Forum. I know that she is aware of it.

Thank you Becky, that was nice of you to comment on the Sweetwater Regional park. I explored the area from Google Maps and I can see many interesting trails that I am going to check out on my mountain bike. San Diego is an area great for mountain bikers. There are single track trails in the many connecting canyons with residential communities  built on the mesas. I can ride all over San Diego and the surrounding areas while rarely ever having to get on the road. There are also storm drain tunnels under the communities that are big enough to ride through. Most of the tunnels are at least 1 mile long. I do have to make sure my lights are fully charged. The next time you and Tad are in San Diego with your motorhome visiting your son, be sure and bring your mountain bikes…and your flashlights.

GO WOLVES!

Lani Cantrell (Mei Lan Woo), was a proud member of the Woodland High class of 1967. Her classmates knew her as Lani MIlls.

In the early 1990s she went back to school and received an AS Degree in Business from Yuba Community College. Lani will be remembered for always meeting people with a smile and warm conversation, she never met a stranger. Lani always kept a positive and upbeat attitude towards life and other people. Lani moved on after a long illness. She was preceded in death by her father, Jimmy H. Woo and mother, Panzy Lee Roarissuez. Lani is survived by her husband of 42 years, Mike Cantrell; two sons, William (Mesha) Harpster and Harley (Kris) Cantrell; granddaughters, Shayla Miller, Andie and Ellie Cantrell; sisters, Eve King and Myra Beltcher; brother, Warren Woo; numerous nieces and nephews and "adopted family". There are no services planned. Just remember the good times.    Published in Daily Democrat on Oct. 28, 2017

Craig, you have Carol Knight and Carol Gorman confused. Both Yolo girls. Carol Knight is my cousin, Carol Gorman a long time friend.

Verne, we will be at Sweetwater just before Christmas, spending two weeks there. Sorry, but neither Tad nor I ride bikes anymore, but I use the hiking trails around the park.
