   Gary Bowen   May 20, 1940 - Dec. 7, 2017

Gary was born in Mulberry, KS.

Gary graduated from Palmer Chiropractic College and served in the US Air Force from 1962-1967. Gary then worked as an X-Ray technician at the Woodland Memorial Hospital until he retired in 2003.

Gary is survived by his wife, Nancy (WHS 1962); son, and daughter-in-law, Fritz and Melissa Bowen of Elk Grove; daughter and her partner, Laura Bowen and Peter Morgan of Caerphilly, Wales, UK; four wonderful grandchildren, Ryan, Josh, Johnny and Myah; brother-in-law, Gary Wirth (WHS) of Woodland; several nieces and nephews.

A devoted husband to his loving wife Nancy, Gary and Nancy enjoyed traveling to Lake Tahoe, Mendocino, and their vacation home in Dunsmuir. Later in life they hit the road in an RV. They traveled the West Coast visiting relatives, friends, and frequently visited their daughter, Laura when she lived in Idaho. Gary was an avid outdoorsman. Activities included backpacking, pheasant hunting, wood cutting, and fly fishing. He always said "the worst day of fishing was better than the best day of working". He loved to be on the water with a fly rod in his hand. He shared his passion for the outdoors with many. He will be sorely missed by his son Fritz, who together experienced countless outdoor adventures. Other hobbies included woodworking and home improvements, and creating Native American inspired designs on gourds. Gary handcrafted wood projects for Nancy's Folk Art painting classes and was a master craftsman who could build or fix anything. Gary will forever be missed by his family and friends. His gentle spirit, kind heart, and sense of humor, live on in those that were lucky enough to call him, husband, father, brother, uncle, grandpa, and friend. At this time, a private family ceremony will be held. The family thanks everyone for their thoughts and support during this difficult time.    Published in Daily Democrat on Dec. 20, 2017

Jenny Johnson (Norman) (1966)

Merry Christmas, everyone! I remember Christmases in Woodland. The weather was usually overcast and rainy. The trees were leafless and the roads wet and slick. Still, we took our shiny new wagons, bikes, skates, baseballs & gloves, or whatever, out to play and share with all the neighbors.

It was back when we took each day’s weather as it came, rather than look for a 10-day forecast to plan our days. Back when kids gathered to just hang out, or start a ballgame, or go swimming, or drag Main. I look back on those days and smile. The memories make me happy. No worries of a mortgage or electric bill. No political arguments. No aches and pains of age.

I often wonder what would have happened if I’d have stayed in Woodland. Not because I didn’t like the life I’ve had, but because I’ve missed the old familiar friends and places where we grew up. (Would you believe that I have moved 65 times?) New friends are great – and new places are exciting, but old friends & places will forever be special.

Just the musings of an old lady. : )

Linda, I love your new picture!

Joel, are those the same chestnuts in chow mein?

Theresa, I bet your traditional cookies are legendary!

Vern, thank you for sharing the inspirations.

Becky, are you thinking tamales rather than enchiladas?

Tom, well said. It’s taken a lot of bumps and bruises to finally figure all of that out for myself. Just because someone says something doesn’t make it true. I’ve also learned that people definitely remember the past differently.

Gail & Tom, I remember going Christmas shopping in SF with my Mom and Grandmother and seeing the big stores, like Macy’s, with their beautiful Christmas decorations in the windows. Do they still do that in the big city? It's cool to see it in Ireland! I’ve seen it more in the little towns these days….depending where you are, I guess. Nice pictures! Thank you for sharing.

Brenda & Melinda, you both said a mouthful!! I agree.

Louise, welcome & Merry Christmas.

Sorry for the long post everyone – I’ve been saving up. : )

God bless. And peace to all.

Nope, enchaladas! They were long and cylindrical, served with the tamale sauce, chopped red onions and parmeasan cheese on top while sitting on an ice berg lettuce leaf. I'm about to drool just thinking about it! But my sauce is made and in the refrig right now.

I’m so glad to read most of the good thoughts that (most) of us share. We are very privileged to live in a beautiful country where we can still express our constitutional rights. True, we don’t always agree on issues but we must be tolerant and respectful. I hope that everyone has a Merry Christmas and a happy New Year. Feliz Navidad y Próspero Año Nuevo.

Merry Christmas all, this is a special time of year, family, friends and a greater appreciation for everything.  We had 8 inches of snow last week, more than I have seen in over 50 plus years of living in the South.  It was beautiful and a great Christmas season surprise.  I wish everyone a great new year.  Special thanks to Ol' Vern for all his posts and for making it another year, we 61s' need good examples.

Merry Christmas everyone!!!   It is lovely to read all the Christmas Wishes posted.  Update on the traditional gingerbread cookies, they have all been made and mailed, a few to New York.  This year 2017, coffee was the new ingredient added, per one of the old German cookie recipes.  I have been told this year, that it was a good addition.  Now for my great niece Katie to decorate the remaining cookies, as she starts to take over the gingerbread tradition in the family.  Blessings to all.

I am truly thankful for the privelige of growing up in Woodland.  I had a pretty happy, safe, and fun life, and the town seemed just about right...not too big....not to small.  I also loved having good ole' Sacramento just a short drive down the road.  I remember many a December night driving the river road to Sacramento when it was so foggy I had to drive with my door open to watch the center line.  A few times my best friend Ralph rode on the hood of the car to keep me on the road.

Christmas was always a special time of the year.  All during my high school years Woodland maintained that small town atmosphere and it seemed we knew or recognized just about everyone in town.  In those days it was bordered by East St, Gibson Road, Kentucky Ave, and the Brown's corner highway (although most of the town stopped at Cottonwood.

I do miss many of those things, but there is no going back.  Things have changed and it will never be the town we all remembered.  The Sunset Drive In, State Theater, Yolo Theater, Porter Theater, Municipal Pool, Brackets Pool Parlor, Woodhaven Lanes, and all those places we spent so many hours.

I hope everyone has a great Christmas...it's coming up quick.  Seems like this year has whizzed by in a flash.

Does Branigan's still have the Turkey farm?  We went there every year for our bird.

Getting ready to head south for the holidays. Tamale sauce is made (double batch) and in the refrigerator in the motor home. To all who grew up in Yolo County and remember Christmas as it was "way back when", the very best Christmas ever and the happiest of New Years to you. I will be somewhat limited with Internet connections and will catch up with all of you late in January.

Chestnuts in chow mein! Thank you Jenny. I guess I have eaten chestnuts. Lets all us old bandsmen and bandgals drink a toast of egg nog to Gordon Friday and the Harriet Lee Senior Elementary band (1960-1962), and to Vern Schwartz and the Woodland High School band of 1962-1966. Don't remember exactly what year Schwartz came to Woodland, but he was the band director I will always remember. Yes gang, our old Woodland is physically gone, or very changed in many ways, but thank God for our ability to remember the way it was. It is a pleasure to go on this site to read your reminiscences including street names, classmate names, buildings etc. Just an example...someone recently mentioned the Pioneer Market on Main Street which brought back memories of helping grandpa deliver produce there. It seems like the "Eagles" hall was right near there, too. So don't be shy. Keep it up. Merry Christmas to all my fellow Wolves.

Where Gary. Would love to drive around town but where are the best. Telling my mom that so many remember her putting up the display on West. She worked all year gathering what she needed for that. It brought a big smile when I told her many in Woodland remembered and love it. Thanks to all.

Does anyone remember a giant orange-colored, orange shaped roadside stand on the side of the old highway to the bay area where you could drive up and get orange juice...around Dixon or maybe Vacaville? It was before I-80 was built. I was pretty young so it's kind of hazy. I also remember the Burma-shave signs. Those were fun. Nothing like a family drive to San Francisco in the '52 Plymouth. What an adventure. We would pack our own lunches and eat in the park to save money...the museums, Golden Gate Park, the Cliff House, and us kid's favorite, the old Fun House with the mirror maze at the entrance.

Brenda Valencia (Arteche) (1969)

Wow!  Just catching up on some old posts!  Thanks for another walk down memory lane.  I am glad I grew up in a small community.  I attended "country schools" until the 7th grade.  I got to be "the new girl" in the middle of my 7th grade year.  I can't say that was enjoyable at all.  Lee Jr. High was huge to me and I had only attended Willow Oak School until its closing and then we were all transerred to Plainfield.

I so remember the Bell & Reed (I think that is what it was called) a drive-in on the west end of town, Rich's, the place we went for a soft vanilla cone or a burger and milkshake - which was a rare treat for me.   Any one remember West Main Market (Gill Family) nand the Pioneer (Carl ?), they were across from each other when I was very little.  They always had penny candy behind the counter and would let me pick out a piece of my choice!  I thought that was a very big deal, but then again I think I was about 3 or 4.  Who recalls the Evergreen,  the pizza hang out?

Anyway, running out of time to finish up tasks - Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year!!
