Here's to one of our "great" class of '65 classmate:  Carol Knight Conley. Volunteers Honored with Service Awards (in today's Democrat) - 20 years helping at Juvenile Hall, Woodland Opera House, Woodland Memorial Hospital and Auxiliary, along with many others.  Read the Democrat for full details as well as other recipients.  Way to GO Carol!  Proud to be a classmate since kindergarten.

What ever became of Mr. Swartz? I remember all the band trips we took, to educate us. There was concerts, museums, plays and out to dinner. He always told us girls "hose and heels". Not sure what the guy dress requirements were.

Last Friday the 10th of May, I was presented with a Golden School Bell from the Stanislaus Union Teachers Association for my years of volunteering at all of the school sites in the district since 2009. It was very humbling that they presented to me.

Thank you Marilee for posting about Carol Knight, and others who were awarded for all their volunteer work.  A lot of good, giving people in Yolo County.  Duane Jackson as well, teaching is a very giving career to all our youth.

Way to go Carol; nice to see the recognition and I am sure they only captured a fraction of it.

Glenda Smith....I was a band member from 1960-1962, and head majorette in 1962.  I believe Vern Swartz came to WHS around 1960 and was the band director.  Vern and his wife Julie lived in Esparto.  Mr. Swartz passed away maybe 15 years ago.  He was an excellent band director.  Marian

     VERN SWARTZ

Vern Swartz passed away on Thursday, July 12, 2007. He was born on Feb. 21, 1927, in Haxton, Colo., to Vern and Brownie Swartz. He was raised in Pompey's Pillar, Mont., and enlisted in the U.S. Navy as a corpsman during World war II. Following his discharge, he returned to finish high school and begin his musical education. He received his degree in music education from Mac Phail Music conservatory in Minneapolis, Minn. He continued with graduate studies at Chicago Music Conservatory and earned a master's degree in music performance on clarinet at Sacramento State University.

After completing college, Vern spent several years as a professional musician, performing with touring bands in the Midwest.

He started teaching band in the public schools in Minnesota - moving to California in 1958. He taught band in Woodland public schools for 30 years at all levels - high school, junior high and elementary. The highlight of his teaching career was marching the Woodland High School Band in the Rose Bowl Parade.

Upon retirement from public school teaching, Vern began teaching private lessons. He taught privately at Woodland Music & Guitar, Northridge Music in Citrus Heights and Watermelon Music in Davis.

He was a member of several Sacramento-area community bands during the past 15 years, and had participated in concert band tours to China, Canada, Hawaii, Russia, Sweden and Denmark.

Vern is survived by Julie, his wife and music soulmate of 45 years; his son, John and wife Sue; and granddaughters, Nadine and Annie of Bemidgi, Minn.; and sister, Barbara Greenlaw of Roseville.

As per Vern's wishes there will be no services. Donations in his memory may be made to Woodland Band Boosters.

Published in Daily Democrat on July 14, 2007

We became Woodland Music Boosters, Inc, a non-profit 501-3C.  After Vern passed away we added to our summer scholarship awards by creating Vern Swartz Memorial Scholarship. (It has since, become the Vern and Julie Swartz Memorial Scholarship).   These are awarded to 6th, 7th and 8th grade students to attend a week long college session living in the dorms and studying music with the professors. After a very intense week there is a remarkable concert that will just blow your socks off.  This summer our 8 students will be living and learning at UOP...Univ of the Pacific.

Thanks, Robert. I don’t know why the photo dropped off the above. It was there before I hit send!

To you Rose Parade Band members...

Remember our “New Years Eve party” at the Roosevelt Hotel?  It was the night of the 30th and I only have the shadowiest images left.  And marching down Main St Disneyland was an extra experience!  Waiting for “step-out” on Pasadena Blvd was unexpectedly cold.  (To this day I cringe every time I hear Georgie Girl. How many hundred times did we play that? I can’t even remember the other 2 songs...anybody know?)

Being voted “The Heartbeat Band” of the Parade was a bonus. It really was a LOT of work to get us all there.

I remember the New Years Eve Party. I wore a silver dress, silver shoes even down to silver eye lashes. One of our group sing "White Rabbit " and I remember I wished I had prepared something to sing. It was a fun evening with lots of dancing.

Richard S. Klenhard (1967)

TO:  Rose Bowl Parade Band Members:   I agree that it was a very cold start to the Parade.  The young boy with the ballon hanging on to the bleacher trying to obtain a birds-eye view is Walter Klenhard ('71).

My sister was the first female drum majorette. She could run out on the field and lead the band down Main Street like none other. When I find it I will post a video.

Don Murdoch (1962)

Gaylene Nicholls, daughter of Dr. Ray Nicholls, was a drum majorette in the middle 50s.

Regarding teaching staff, some of you mentioned Coach Doyle Pinkston.  Just a FYI ~ This weekend, Doyle and his wife Phyllis are celebrating their 70th Wedding anniversary!  WOW!  Congratulations Doyle and Phyllis!

Boy, Doyle and Phyllis started young.  He's 86 and she's 85.  Must've gotten married in high school.  More power to a teen-age romance lasting this long.

Thank you for the update and correction Joann. I went back into my Freshman year book and found Ina. She had written in my year book. I have many fond memories of the Culleys.

Gary and Larry once made a fort in a big clump of poison oak bushes...Larry's head swelled up the size of a bucket and almost died.
