Tim, Magenta is actually quite pleasant under certain circumstances.  When you fly an airplane and use GPS for navigation, you simply input your starting point, your waypoints, your destination (take into consideration terrain and restricted airspace) then follow the magenta line.

That may be true David, but I was referencing a girl that sat behind me in sophomore English.

Actually, Magenta was a character in the Rocky Horror movie.................

Thank you Jim, I had heard she moved to Burbank right after graduation.

The "old" marching band uniforms (62?-65 color picture).  The "new" uniforms ('66+ B/W picture) doubled as a concert band uniform (both shown). TheB/W picture was from the Daily Democrat (wish I had a color pic), but it looks like "trimmed with black?"  No magenta that I can see - maybe under that gigantic hat?  (You guys: Don, John, David, Jim, Joel, Tim + are funny!!)

7 May 1945 Happy VE Day (Victory Europe). This is my Dad, Jim Kareofelas (WHS class of 1938). He was stationed at Templehoff Airbase, Berlin, Germany. They got to play in all the broken Nazi Airplanes, when the war was over. I think this was a Focke Wulf Fw 190?

I remember playing in the Rose Bowl Parade, New Years 1968 I think.
Seems like some parents had a problem with marching band sharing uniforms with the concert band then some fellow musicians got angry because Mr. Swartz allowed them to March with us.

Greg:  Love the picture of your Dad, what a  piece of history to share.  Those were pretty terrible planes without much protection when in flight. I hear they did not have heaters in those days and the Air Force flew blind many times against the elements.

Greg, I really enjoyed the picture of your father.    Here's my dad (a navigator) in 1944:

Greg, Julie and Dan:  Love the pictures.  I remember the band uniforms, never fit me at all.  I was always very uncomfortable in those things.  I can say, I was not a fan at all of Varsity Band; however, my hat is off to you Dan and all those who were the best in the band!!!  I tried, and finally told my Mother I could not do that at all.  Took up piano from Mrs. Joyce Canevari; a really much more enjoyable experience.  Greg and Julie those service pictures of your Fathers are the best.  Julie, your father and Fred look alike.   As they say, "A picture says a million words".  Thankful for all service persons.

Thanks Vern.  I, for one, had a lovely Mother’s Day spent with our daughter and her family.

I may have posted this before, but here's a photo of the infamous gravel ride truck with a14 or 15 year old me in front of it, taken on North Cleveland street.  A 1951 Mack LJT with the dump trailer in question behind it.  From 1962, I think.

John, great picture. 1962 was the year I got involved in pole climbing. I lived a block over on North Walnut.St...........I think that's me in the upper left. I zoomed in and still can't tell ...... It might be Rodney.

Ha ha, Tim.  I thought that might be you until I saw the north south wires and realized it was a crossbar.

Thank you for your remarks John and Tim. They are hitting close to home for me and I have to jump in. The house behind the truck in the photo is very possibly  the house I was raised in until 5 or 6 years of age. It was on the S/E corner of North & Cleveland. My parents moved into that home in the mid 30's and then moved out to the little store just South of Cache Creek on 113 in 1947. I attended kindergarten at the Primary School on the corner of Walnut & North and then 1st through 8th grade at Laugenour. Tim you say you lived 1 block over on Walnut & North. Susie Cranston, WHS "61", lived on the South/West corner of Walnut & North. Ernie Gray, WHS "61" lived several houses South of me and Marv Camerina, WHS "57", lived across the street from Ernie. Sorry...this is all probably very boring to most...but so exciting to me!

John Eaton:  You never change.  Love the 1962 picture with the big truck, and whoever it is on the pole.  Not too many poles these days.

OK, since no one else has asked, I have to: John, what was the "infamous gravel truck ride?" A whole bunch of 14/15 years old up in the trailer as you wheeled down West St.?

John Eaton (1964)

It was a continuation of a hay ride tradition, but since I didn't have a hay truck at the time I offered to supply the Mack and the gravel trailer for the purpose.  I believe we loaded up at the high school and I know we ended up in Cache Creek just north of the Flyers Club where unfortunately I got stuck in loose gravel.  By the time I got the truck moving again it seemed that everyone had found alternate means of transportation back to town.  I do remember Debbie Wetzel stuck around for moral support.  But we were all much older by then, I am certain I was 16 at least.

Good for Debbie Wetzel for being so kind to a poor boy, out in the gravel!!!  Sounds like fun to me.  Those were  the days, when an old truck and a bunch of kids can just enjoy the simple  things!!!

I remember a hay ride in Malcolm Gray's pickup; a lot of couples got together and had a progressive dinner and then to the hay ride dance.  I remember Alfred Catalan, Richard Buchignani, Mary Stwart, Mike Shanafelt, etc.  It was just a ton of fun.  Laughing all the time.   Malcolm and I still laugh about that time.  I think it was in September 1963, just before it started to become Fall.
