Dee (Marilee) Damsen (Kindelt) (1965)

As the class rep for the class of 65, it is with sincere sadness that we have lost another one of our wonderful classmates:  Carole James Spurlock.  I have held off reporting the news about Carol until it was in "print."  To the family, if I have overstepped with this announcement, I deeply apologize.  My condolences to her family as she was a wonderful person that was loved dearly by her family.  She will be missed by all who knew her!

Rosemary Leventon (Hartwig) (1965)

Deepest condolences to Carole's family.  She was a good friend for many years.  I was truly blessed to have her as a friend during high school.  We hadn't seen each other a lot, but when I moved back to Woodland in 2005 we ran into each other a few times.  Hold on to your family and hold on to your faith!.  You will make it through. Blessings,  Rosemary Hartwig.  (65).

Steve Takimoto (1966)

I'm posting this message on behalf of my sister, Lois (Takimoto) Kawata (69).  Those of you who know her, or of her, may be wondering about her using a respirator.  She has not used one yet.  She has, however, been using a feeding tube, and hasn't eaten food for years.  She does appreciate everyone's thoughts and prayers.  She says "Thank you!"

My Message:  It is so amazing that both Lois, and Jim, were given 3 - 5 years to live when diagnosed, yet here they are, 20 and 38 years, respectively, later.  Yes, it is curious (what are the odds?) that they were both in the same graduating class at WHS.  Did Don, although in an earlier class at WHS, post that he has had ALS for more than the 5 years too?

What inspirations they are!  In the last 10 years, after retirement, I've run quite a few road races: 5K's, 5 Milers, 10K's, half-marathons, and even 5 marathons.  When I started feeling it, I thought of my sister, as inspiration.

I am hoping someone can help me identify people in this Dixieland band.  This is what I know or suspect:

Seated - Jack Martin, guitar; Harold Douglass, piano

Standing - Fred Miracle (?), bass; Bill Linford (?), trombone; Gordon Friday, trumpet; ?, sax; ?, clarinet.

I can confirm that that is Bill Linford.  Also, it may be Mr. Ray Walker on saxophone.

Hi Anne

Cool Pic, does it have a date?

08/30/19 12:25 PM #5435

Anne Douglass (Loud) (1964)

Wally:  thanks for confirming Bill Linford, and I think you are correct about the sax player being Ray Walker.  I found his picture in the 1960 Lee School yearbook, and it looks like him.  Greg:  there is no date on the back of the picture.  It just says Superior Photo Service, Lloyd J. Lodi, Owner, 816 Main Street, Woodland, Cal.

Jim Miracle (1969)

On guitar is Jack Martin, on bass is Fred Miracle on trombone is Bill Lonford, on piano is Harold Douglas, on trumpet is Gordon Friday, on Sax is Ray Walker, and I am not sure but I think the clarinet is Ron Evans, a former music teacher.  They used to practice in our living room occasionally.  They were pretty good.

Thank you, Jim, for confirming those names, and for your personal experience.  Can you pin down a time frame?

Jim Miracle (1969)

I believe it was about 1959 - 1962.  They usually played for a New Years Eve party somewhere and so they would practice a couple of times.  I don’t know where else they practiced, but I do know they practiced in our living room sometimes .

Dolores Cabias (Buck) (1965)

My condolences to Carole James Spurlock's family for her loss.  Bill, I am sure that you and Carole had a great life together and now she has moved on to a place of peace, tranquility and specially a place to watch over all of us. I have not spoken with Carole in many years but I remember our high school days and some conversations I had with her when she worked for DMV.  I too worked for DMV in Sacramento. My prayers go out for you and the family.

Anne:  Thank you for the fun Dixieland Band picture!  Those men were having a great time.  Good old times in Woodland with simple music and gatherings.  It seems that now days things are too complicated.  Just family times shared, backyard picknicks and of course baseball.  Love looking at this picture.

I was asked to post the picture again with all of the names:  guitar, Jack Martin; piano, Harold Douglass; bass, Fred Miracle; trombone, Bill Linford; trumpet, Gordon Friday; sax, Ray Walker; clarinet, Ron Evans.

I have been out of the country for a month and have not had a chance to post this photo of Carolyn Hand Bradley who passed away August 27, 2019. Her obituary can be found on this website in the "In Memory" section.

Very sad to learn of Carolyn passing.  I am friends with Wanda Hand.  Alice did my Mother's hair for years, as did Wanda.  One reason Mother's hair was always so perfect.  My prayers to all the family at this time.

Kathy Northup (Schick) (1965)

My brother, JAMES OLIVER NORTHUP, died peacefully, in his sleep this afternoon.  He was surrounded by his loving wife, son and daughter in his own home in Davis.

Jim had shown me the wonderful huge greeting card classmates had made for him only a few weeks ago at the class of 69 fifty year reunion.  He fought hard against the disease, diagnosed in 1981 and at that time told he had only about a year and a half to live.  Even up to the end, when his hospice nurse predicted he would die by Monday, he held on until Wednesday.  I’m embarrassed to admit that even when he could barely whisper, whenever I saw him he wanted to hear about my problems and worries and not discuss his own.  And I miss his ever-ready smile, even when things were awful.

I will post notice here when his memorial service is planned, and I hope Robert Cowing will help out by posting his obituary.  (Thanks, Robert, I live in Stockton, so I don’t get the local newspaper.  I really appreciated your posting the piece the newspaper did on Jim a few months ago.)

Katherine Northup Schick, class of ‘65
