David Hughes (1967)

The President and Prophet of the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, at last week's 190th semiannual General Conference, called all people of the world to join in a worldwide fast.  Here are quotes from his invitation:

“For all whose health may permit, let us fast, pray, and unite our faith once again. Let us prayerfully plead for relief from this global pandemic. I invite all, including those not of our faith, to fast and pray on Good Friday, April 10, that the present pandemic may be controlled, caregivers protected, the economy strengthened, and life normalized.”

Please consider joining in fasting from two meals and praying for relief from the pandemic.  For more information on the President's talk you can visit The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints web page.

Thanks David Hughes for this wonderful message of fasting and prayer for the whole world. It was an amazing conference and we participated in the worldwide fast up here in Brookings OR.  This Easter weekend is so special and this Holy Week has already brought us all more in tune with the ultimate plan of why we are all  here on earth and what are we supposed to do while we have these mortal bodies.  I truly believe this COVID 19 will reshape this world and how we treat each other and how we do business. I hope we don't go back to what we thought was normal. I hope we all are kinder, more caring and generous, more loving and thoughtful to our families and loved ones, and our neighbors and all those important essential people who do so much to make our lives simpler and comfortable for us.  All jobs are essential and may we appreciate them more and say thank you to the postman and grocery workers and our Drs and nurses and restaurant's staff etc..  Prayers to those who have friends and family that may have been touched by this virus.  May each of us bow our heads each day in gratitude for all we have been given.  FAITH over FEAR!

Sometime in 1966, the Orange Peel did an article on the Woodland chapter of the Men from Uncle. That's our good friend Tom Ohl standing behind Tootie. Gil Yule, Don Jones and myself on top of the star of the show, my Corvair. Goofy times for sure, but some of them remembered as though it were yesterday.

Mike Miller, I had a little yellow 1961 Corvair Monza given to me by my dad on my 16th. birthday.  It had black naugahyde interior.  I found one the same color, but with fabric seats offered for sale in the Phoenix area about six years ago.  On our way there I pulled over to look at a map.  I glanced up to see a little yellow Corvair pull out of a shopping center.  I immediately stepped on the gas, nearly breaking a red light getting through the intersection in order to catch up with it.  He saw I was following him and pulled over.  I asked if he wanted to sell his car and offered him a price.  He said the guy who was interested had just backed out of the deal the night before.  I was a $1000 shy of what he wanted and said if I would come up with $500 more he would sell to me.  We made a deal right then and there.  It's a 1963 but looks identical to the one I had.  The next day the guy who had wanted it got back to him, but he was honest and said he had already sold it.  I love that little car!  Sounds too good to be true, doesn't it?

I still see what I think was the red and white Ranchero that Jenny Johnson used to drive around town.  Back in the day...  :)  We learned a valuable lession; don't drag on a dead end street.  The neighbors may not catch you going, but they will catch you coming out...

I remember those Ford cars.  I use to date Calvin Smith who owned a blue and white Ford convertible.

.  Boy that was years ago.  Nice car.

Ron had a '57 Ford car much like this.  Is that one a '56?  He painted his a royal blue, but it was originally all white.  Smokey, do you remember it?  He traded it off for an emerald green '65 Malibu.  Smoke, I can't remember which car it was, but I was bowling one night in a league.  You both came in and decided you wanted to go to Tower Records in Sac.  Before I finished you two were back!  You had to travel the River Road to get there...no I5 yet.  The Lord had to have been with you both that night!

Linda the Ford in the picture looks to me like a 55 Ford Crown Victoria.  I remember Ron having a 57 Ford Custom model. Also my brother Loran had a 57 Ford Custom at one time. And who this guy Smokie?  Lol.

I'm sorry, Larry, I should have been more specific.  I meant the post by Gary of the red and white pickup.  I just checked with Ron and he said his car was a '58...always thought it was a '57.

I bought my first car at 15 1/2 years old. A 1955 Ford Crown Victoria, white w/ black top.  Lots of crome.  I remember taking my driving test with the instructor along side me and Bob Eveland sitting in the back. The insrtuctor had me take a left hand turn onto main street from first street. As I was making the turn, my hub cap flew off rolling down the street. The instructor had me pull over and he let Bob out and Bob chased down the rolling hub cap, stopping traffic to retrieve the hup cap.   Scared us all, but I passed my driving test any how. My instructor said " that was a first " for him.  Bob and I always talk about this capper when we get together. One of many cappers we enjoyed together over the years. I painted the car candy apple red my junior year. This car lasted me through my senior year, when I bought a new Yellow Chevrolet SS Impala 2 door Hard Top . I enjoyed belonging to  the Valecians car club .

I too will miss Bruce Baccei  as he and Gary Dodson were instrumental in the creation of the Senior Class Movie for the Woodland High School Class of 1963.  In the film he was always driving around in his Green Jeep.     He was one of the few in our class of 1963 who received an appointment to West Point, The US Army Military School from which he graduated.  I also remember that he delivered Turkeys for Brannigans Turkey Farm in Woodland .    I will miss Bruce.  RIP

So sorrry Carole to hear that your brother Don has passed away.  We were really good friends back in the days. I remember when your family lived next door to the Easterly out on W. Main St.  Don and I did a lot of cruising together around Woodland in the 60's.  RIP my good friend.
