That sounds right Don Murdock as rice is normally grown on less productive soil such as is in the by-pass and more easily irrigated by flooding.  The Youngmarks are also an old family from around Dunnigan, and we all are probably aware of Youngmark's Nursery on West St. which was purchased from the nice Nielson family.  I also always heard that the Hersheys in Woodland were relatives of the family who owned the renowned Hershey chocolate company of PA.  Milton S. Hershey's family were Mennonites and he and his wife bore no children.  He also named Hershey, PA.  Does anyone know if our local Hershey family were indeed related to this famous family?

Some time ago someone (senior moment, can't remember who) asked fpr a picture of the 3Jay Market, 214 4th Street, owned by my folks.  I finally found one.  This now the site of the Mission which would make my folks proud.

I spent a hell of a lot of time in that store. Your Mom Nelly was very nice to me. I will always remember it as Nelly's Market. Wasn't it called Nelly's Market before it became 3J Market?

Hey Armand

Thanks! It was me that was looking for a pic of your family's store. PERFECT! that is exactly how I remembered it. Many memories of running to the store to pic up something for Mom. Glad you were able to find a pic

So many memories of "Nelly's" Market, across the street from where we lived.  (We lived on 4th and Court at the time) My mother, Kate Logue, used to tell us that your mother, Nelly, would call her and say, "Kate, I hate to bother you, but your children are up on the roof again." (two story housesurprise). I think your parent's market was like a second home...

Nothing like an ice cold grape Nehi from "Nellie's" on a broiling hot August day in Woodland. Making plastic wire keychains at Beamer park, Going to a movie at the Yolo Theatre, Swimming at the Muni Pool, Riding our bikes out to Cache Creek, or getting a game of "Work Ups" going at Beamer School. ----Remember Work Ups? ---Nostalgia, who can forget it.

Connie, I loved your post.  Your parents were awesome next-door neighbors when we lived in town.  Your brother showed me some homes for sale during that time period.  One time I was talking to your mom and before I got off the phone, I was talking to her in her sweet southern accent!  LOL

Joel-Just a couple of days ago I was telling my wife how my sister and I would go down to Beamer Park every day during the summer when we were kids.  I lived about a block and a half down the street.  Each week was a different craft like basket weaving, plaster of paris, etc.  The week that we did the key chains was "gimp" week.  Correct me if I am wrong.  I even did a summer as park director at Southland Park when I was home one summer.  Great post Joel-brought back some great memories.  I'm sure lots of our WHS classmates spent lots of summers at the park nearest them when they were kids.

David and Joel, I too would go to all of the different summer parks in Woodland during the summer. Beamer park, City park, Southland park, Freeman park. I did arts and crafts, but especially played or entered into the parks tournaments, like tennis, ping pong, archery, paddle ball, and table games.  Oh, and the summer track meets at the old Woodland High track. Won a lot of races in those days and collecting Blue first place ribbons.  Those were the fun days with lots of fond memories growing up in the 50's.

Swimming at the muni pool was almost a daily routine on hot summer days, but it was a lot less crowded swimming in the irrigation canals west of town.  Joanie and I keep daring each other to try it again.  (Maybe that's the difference: bikes were easier off the canal banks than a car is now.)  Good memories.

A few more Hershey House Pix. This view shows that the roof was well maintained so there were no leaks inside the house. A leaky roof usually doomed the old houses in Woodland. I hope who ever burned the Hershey House lived to regret what a loss its destruction was

Inside the Hershey House. The remarkable thing was the house still had the original wall paper, it had never been "Painted over". Notice that the wainscotting was also original, never painted over the original varnish. All the woodwork wainscotting (&and in fact, all the wood doors, trim etc etc) was first growth, clear redwood, You cold not duplicate any of this today, the wood does not exist. A shame to think it all burned :-(

Thanks Katy for the history of the Hershey sisters. I have a vague recollection of my mom, a nurse, dragging me along as a youngster to deliver medication to them. I just remember that big, beautiful house, although I probably thought is was haunted at the time! I grew up in Woodland but now in Chico and belong to the Chico Heritage Assn. and am an Architect and am focused on saving the historic resourses here. So sad when they get destroyed

Greg:  Thank you so much for the inside pictures of the Hershey House, what wonder of days gone by with rich woods and fine wallpaper.  Just a real shame it is gone forever.  That roof is outstanding.  You will never see such fine constrution in this age, skilled workmanship!

Hiddle-2 great years with Stoeven Bros when Charlie "Pure D" Goggans was our manager.  How much fun that was!  Another great memory I have of Charlie is when I came back to Woodland to get married and Charlie totally took care of my suit of clothes to get married in.  What a great man he was.

Dave,  I don't recall Charlie managing you guys.  What years?  He played for Canteen Club with me in 63-64.  In fact, Charlie and Tom French combined for a no-hitter in the Sacto Tourney in 1964.  Quite a rarity in slo-pitch.  He was, indeed, a great guy.

Hi Paul

I worked at Stan's from 1962-1963 and Charlie was really funny.  He was great to work with.   He would love to get some type of candy bar.  To this day I cannot remember the name of it.   He would pay me money to drive a couple pair of pants to the Stan's Mens Store in No Sacramento.   It  was a great experience  working for him.

Paul, I worked there, all total, eleven years. Every Christmas week was fun and chock-full of good memories. It was indeed a great place to work and Charlie was the best. I was so glad I was able to visit him in the hospital the day before he passed away. He was my boss and my friend and a true Woodland icon.
