Jack Martin Jr (1966)

Joan, my mistake(s) about Brodie's wife's name and their marriage status.  My very old memory tends to fuzz / blur things out sometimes.  My apologies.

David,  Jack Slaven was 7th grade teacher, Clifford Sides was 7th or 8th grade, Mrs. Kibbee and a Henrietta was 6th grade.  David and Anne Douglas father was the Principal. Cannot remember Henrietta last name.

Joan Richter Luchessi, 1959:  My dad took pictures of my little brother (Billy) and Kelly Brodie, in front of the Blevins' home on First Street.   Cute?  (We lived across the street.)

So sorry to hear of Dan's passing.
I started at Lee for Kindergarten (Mrs Hampshire)and First (Mrs Lamont). Then Lee changed to just 7th and 8th so started at Dingle for 2d thru 6th....2d Mrs Wicks; 3d Mrs Davies; 4th Mrs Owens; 5th Mr Chamberlain and Miss Hagmire. Back to Lee (Bob Gray/science and Gordon Friday/band were my favs) then on to HS. Loved the science classes, especially anatomy with Mr Pfaffenburg and of course band. Our trip to march in Disneyland  and the Rose Parade was quite an experience.

Great to hear all the names of those Beamer teachers.  My Dad taught at Beamer School when I was two years old and we lived on Second Street. The year was 1948.  We left and later return to Woodland.  Miss Conger, Mrs. Sides, Mr. Harold Douglass, names recalled.   Julie, love the picture of your brother on the steps of Dr. Blevins' home.  In my Yolo County book, the first Dr. William J. Blevins, Senior charged $1.50 for an office visit and $2.50 for a regular house call.  His son, William Blevins, Junior, joined his father in 1932.   They worked out of the Porter Building.  Later the doctors established the Woodland Clinic Medical Group.

Doyle Phillips---Could Henrietta's last name have been Toothacher?  Once you hear a name like that, it's hard to forget.smiley

Buddy Owens---I had your mother for 2nd grade at Lee school.....before it became a junior high.  She was a very nice lady.

Maybe this will open up some more memories.......my teachers, in order, from Kindergarten through 6th grade were:  Mrs. Decker, Mrs. Cornelius, Mrs. Owens, Mrs. Dahlberg, Mrs. Springer, Miss Grigsby and Mr. Heney.  Now, if I could just remember what I had for breakfastfrown

Julie: very cute picture of your brother and Sue's oldest, Kelly on the Blevins front porch.

Here are the teachers I had (or what I can remember) Kindergarten Mrs, Walker at Woodland Primary School (The Baby School, on Walnut Street), I went to 1st grade there also but don't remember if I had Mrs. Walker again. Does anyone remember who taught 1st grade at Primary? Can't remember my 2nd-grade teacher at Dingle. She was only there one year. 3rd grade, Mrs. Peckham (my favorite) 4th grade, Mrs. Roach, 5th-grade Miss Grigsbee (she taught my dad and my aunt and also taught with my grandmother). 6th-grade Miss Hanks, 7th-grade Mr. Passnan (another favorite, and Mrs. Proctor 8th-grade, also taught with my grandmother. High School favorites were Mr. Brown, English, Mr. Bolen, Spanish, Mr. Miracle, typing, Mrs. Sadler, homemaking, and Mr. Cossman, science. I had Mr. Thatcher, but he couldn't understand why I wasn't as smart as my dad!

David Stotts: Did you play baseball at WHS? I seem to remember that name as a good player... third base or pitch, maybe? I was fortunate enough to make the team in my freshman year and loved that sport. I wasn't very good at basketball and ran like crazy in practice to watch the games from the bench! Baseball and swimming were my things. Someone mentioned a "Henrietta" teacher. Henrietta Toothacher(sp?) as I recall. I had Mr. Teel at Lee, 7th grade block, I think. If you dozed or misbehaved in his class he'd come up behind you and yank you out of your chair by your ears!

No marriages, no children; but a lot of nieces and nephews who are the jewels of my life.  Craig you are so right we all need to be vaccinated; and we may need additional treatments as this virus takes more turns.  Terrible to think about, but the medical profession has the facts.  And, many of our medical teams have passed, by caring for the ill.  Bless them all at this difficult time.  Masks are still required in many group settings.

Theresa, absolutely right about getting vaccinated. Unfortunately the state I live in (Alabama) is dead last in vaccinations which only makes it that more dangerous for the rest of us even if we're vaccinated. Our city schools in Huntsville have mandated masks for students this coming year.

I had Henrietta Toothaker in 6th grade at Beamer. I remember she was always immaculately dressed.  Lovely lady and teacher. I had just moved to Woodland from Santa Cruz.

I really enjoyed having Mrs. Owens for 4th grade. I think she was ahead of her peers in that she started teaching us Spanish. Seemed like we were always doing projects. Also Miss Nash come in for art.. maybe monthly?? And we had a student teacher.. Mrs. Bush.  Looking back now, it seems she was very young but maybe early-mid 20s. Also remember eating lunch out on the lawn by the playground and skinning my knee on the blacktop when I got tripped...not sure it wasn't on purpose...never did like that kid... and developing blood poisoning. Don't ever want to do that again!  4th grade was also the year we could start music lessons. I chose flute so Ray Walker was my first teacher. That of course led to Gordon Friday and then to Vern Swartz.  Make music. It's very therapeutic and good for your brain.

Joel Childers (1966)

Sandra Humphrey - As a young man just out of college I spent 2 weeks in Huntsville in training for a job with the Army Corp of Engineers. While there I had a chance to go down to my family's namesake town, Childersburg, in Talladega County and visit the De Soto Caverns. Huntsville is a beautiful city with great historical homes and buildings. I found it to be very urbane and not at all as the south is so often portrayed  by Hollywood. A trip to the cemetary amazed me as there were gravestones with birth dates predating the revolutionary war. I also remember having a brief drill on what to do in case of a tornado. It didn't happen for me. But I've had more than my share of earthquakes while working in San Francisco - Oakland - Alameda and Seattle.

I get a flu shot every year. So why not a covid booster. Maybe if necessary they can combine it with an annual SARS-Covid shot into a single shot. After all, the flu keeps mutating, too, just like all viruses do.

My memories of Huntsville, Al were about a school I attended at Redstone Arsonal while I was a young First Lt in the Army.  As the Batallion Logistics Officer, it was my responsibility to return a number of nuclear missiles to Redstone because we were closing a couple of Army Nuclear Missile Sites in Milwaukee, Wisc in 1970.  On my first night, I went into town to have a socialbe cocktail, but discovered it was in a "Dry Town".  I managed to find a bar and was informed it was a "Private Club" where upon, the bartender asked one of the locals if he might sponsor me.  The guy looked me over and said sure.  I paid my $5 initiation fee and was served.  Interesting town.

So let's continue the stroll down memory lane with grammar school class pictures. I'll start with my Kindergarten class picture taken at the old Maxwell School when it was on Walnut Street. Also known as the "Baby School" back then. What's amazing to me is that there are faces that I can still put names to. So play "where's Waldo - or where's Jimmy" with this picture. Enjoy!
