So let's continue the stroll down memory lane with grammar school class pictures. I'll start with my Kindergarten class picture taken at the old Maxwell School when it was on Walnut Street. Also known as the "Baby School" back then. What's amazing to me is that there are faces that I can still put names to. So play "where's Waldo - or where's Jimmy" with this picture. Enjoy!

Sandra, Tennessee has also been very resistant to vaccination for Covid.  Hoping attitudes will change.  In late June, my husband and I made a trip down and back from Knoxville,TN to Huntsville as it was the closest international airport where we could have our "interview" (about 3 minutes each) for Global Entry enrollment.  It was a beautiful drive over and we regretted that we had not planned to stay the night and see more of Huntsville.  We had lunch in Madison, minutes from the airport, and almost needed sweaters out on the restaurant patio.  I sure didn't expect that in Alabama in mid-June.

Ron, there are still some "dry" counties here in Tennessee.  The county that Lynchburg, TN is located in is a dry county and also home to Jack Daniels Distillery.  The distillery is only allowed to sell "commemorative" bottles that happen to contain Jack Daniel's Tennessee Whiskey and I think it took a special act of the Tennessee State legislature for that to happen.

Jim, are you on the ground and Tom in front of teacher?  Is it Al and Larry in top row?

Hey Ron, I moved to Huntsville in 1973.  Many changes since you were here with NASA and 4 major Army Commands along with multiple defense contractors located here and FBI HQ moving here soon.  It's really a melting pot of people from all over the US.  I do remember the Blue Laws many years ago, but long ago overturned.  We're actually pretty well known now for some very good breweries.  Not to sound like a Chamber of Commerce spokesperson, but I believe we're rated one of the top 10 US cities to live in.  Come visit sometime and give us another chance. My husband and I will take you out for a beer:-)

Larry-That was the 2nd grade teacher that I could not remember at Beamer-Mrs. Hughes!  Now thanks to Hiddle (Bill Hiddleson) my 3rd grade teacher was Morse (now I remember I think it sounded like Morris) not Morrison as I had wrongly recollected.  Thanks Larry and Hiddle for helping this old brain getting some recollections correct.

This is my revised teacher line-up at Beamer School with a little help from my friends.

2nd-Hughes. 3rd-Morse. 4th-Cushing. 5th-Railing. 6th-Conger.  Not sure if they were Mrs. or Miss so I left that off.  Final answer Regis!

I can answer this, Miss Conger was always a Miss.  A great teacher, but quite a character.  She was a personal friend of my parents, and would come over for dinner.  The stories she could tell, with quite a few adjectives  and flare.  She did not put up with any playing around in her classroom.  Bless her heart, she gave her all.

Connie, my wife's grandparents had a farm outside of Shelbyville, which is just over the hill from Lynchburg and the Jack Daniels Distillery.  I have been a Squire at the Jack Daniels operations for many years, which gives us special treatment at their plant whenever I visit, including private tours, free paraphanaila, etc..  We were there several years ago and they recommended that we dine at Miss Mary Bobo's in Lynchburg, which was a real treat.  If you are ever in Lynchburg, you need to have reservations in advance, but it is worth the stop. We also got to visit the former family farm, which is now owned by a veteranarian who treats large farm animals.  They were gracious enough to allow the family to go through the old farm house where Bonnie's grandparents lived and where her family visited from Ohio a couple of times each year.  A whole different way of life from Woodland.

Hi Sandra,

Thanks for the invite.  If I ever have reason to get back to Huntsville, I will take you up on that beer!

Anne Douglass (Loud) (1964)

If it helps to jog people’s memories, here are my contributions to teachers’ names at Beamer and Lee Schools.  The spellings, and Miss vs Mrs, are gotten from report cards and from my mother and my notations on the backs of class pictures.  BEAMER - Kindergarten: Mrs Kathy Higgins; First: Miss Leola Croco; Second: Mrs Marian Fairlee; Third: Mrs Sue Dee Morris; Fourth: Mrs Katherine Cushing; Fifth: Miss Carrie Conger; Sixth: Miss Henrietta Toothaker.  LEE - Seventh: homeroom - Mrs Verdi Kibbe, Math - Richard Page, Science - William Utley, PE - Mrs Eleanor Hooper, Band - Gordon Friday; Eighth: homeroom - Carroll Teel, math - Mrs V King, science - Edwin Warner, PE - Mrs Eleanor Hooper, band - Gordon Friday, choir - Mrs Harriette Vickery.  Theresa Eve is correct about her description of Carrie Conger - she came to our house for dinner, too.  Sue Dee Morris lived across the street from the school in the corner duplex at College and Sunset Avenue (and down the street from my house).  Now that I have gone through my scrapbook one more time, it is apparent that after 70 years, it needs to be retired and the contents moved to a new scrapbook.

Thank you Anne, I can recall more of those teachers from Beamer as you put the pieces of classes and names together.  It was a few years down the memory road for sure.  All great teachers, and a lot of memories.  Dad loved teaching at Beamer.

Dan Wirth wants to know if anyone remembers Miss Conger's rubber hose?  If you were not paying attention she would slam the hose down on your desk and scare the crap out of you.  She was also a liberal user of Aspercream.  Chewed the gum and smeared the cream on her body.  I didn't have the pleasure of being in her class as I was a Cashville kid but Dan remembers her well.

Anne:  Can you post a picture of one of the class pictures with Miss Carrie Conger and Miss Henrietta Toothaker?  I remember how Carrie looked, but not Miss Toothaker.  Believe you posted one picture a long time ago.  So fun to see that again.  I am sure your Dad, Mr. Douglass, hiered my Dad to teach during those early years at Beamer.  As children of teachers and Pricipals, we had to be in our places at all times.  Mother wanted me to be in Carrie Conger's class, but Miss Conger  scared me too much.  Decided to stay at Cachville where I knew the teachers.  What stories.  JoAnn, you are so on with that tale of Carrie and the rubber hoes.

It sounds as if you have spent far more time enjoying Middle Tennessee than Jim and I have.  We have only been to Lynchburg once, but thoroughly enjoyed the tour of the Jack Daniels Distillery, though I have never acquired the taste for whisky, Tennessee or otherwise.  I have only been to Shelbyville once as well.  We attended an event at a beautiful farm there that was home to champion Tennessee Walking horses.  Do you recall the name of the veterinarian who now owns Bonnie's family farm?  Jim is wondering if he might know him.  If he is Tennessee grad, Jim more than likely would have taught him.  Even if he graduated from somehwere else, Jim and the former Dean of the UT Vet College used to take a few days each year to visit practices all over the state of Tennessee.  If you ever get over to East Tennessee, we'd be happy to show you our "scruffy little city".

"Hey there, Georgie Girl..."

I was sooo sick of that song.
We were voted "The Heartbeat Band"

by the Parade Committee due to our major efforts to get to Pasadena.

Wow, Pam, there were REALLY  A LOT of students in that band! Can you tell us what year this was? Was Mr Schwartz still the Music teacher? Lots of credit to all involved; doing that kind of production takes SO much effort!

I was there along Colorado Ave to watch the Woodland Marching Band, January 1968.  My cousin Janice Wofinbarger was in the band. As the band came by I went out and shook Mr. Schwartz's hand, since he was my choir director when I was at Woodland High school. Great memory of the Mighty Wolves.

Very impressive picture of the Woodland High School Band, 1968.  I had to enlarge the picture, to see Mr. Swartz at the far right.  Never knew the band became this large.  Years after my graduation.
