Don and Tim, thanks for the correction. I saw the word old and thought it was an old photo. Yes, Craig I still love to use the River Road. More people are using it now I love when people tell me they don't like it because of the "narrow bridge". If they only knew the old one they wouldn't complain. I remember cars losing their driver-side mirrors on the bridge. With I-5 traffic it's the way to go.

I lived on yhe river road at elkhorn. While the ride on the river road is nice and somewhat relaxing, most people have no idea of how many people have died on the old river road. Howard Amen can bear witness to that.

The Old River Road holds many good memories, as that was once the only road to get to Sacramento.  Seeing all the fields is a delight.  However, there has been many many accidents on that road.  I enjoy driving it now especially when the sunflowers  are in bloom.  Wish the railroad would be in continued use.  They did have a few train excersions for visitors and children, which I took during the Fall and Pumpkin Time.  Nice.

When I was very young my Dad worked at McClellan Air Base. He would drive the River Road and take the Elkhorn Ferry over to the north side. His parents had a farm right off the River Road and we spent a lot of time out there and took the ferry a few times. I don't suppose the Elkhorn Ferry is still there. My earliest memory is running around on Gramma's farm. Back then there was a hobo camp on the river outside of Broderick. It was mentioned as a hippie camp in Tom Robbins book, "Another Roadside Attraction," a wild and crazy tale of the nutty 60s. If you love books, check it out.

I remember begging my dad to take the ferry every time we went to Sacrmento, only to have to wait because the ferry had just left this side. It took quite some time for the ferry to get to the other side and back to this side, to pick us up, so he would manuver around the line, waiting for the ferry, and head to the I street bridge. You guessed it, the bridge would be open so a large boat could pass and we ended up waiting some more. I learned a lot about swearing on those trips!

1912   R.M.S. Titanic, the largest ocean liner of its time, marked as unsinkable goes down on its maiden voyage.  (One of the big chimneys was just for design, not function.)

1915   Corning Pyrex bakeware, the first home glass produce able to withstand, the baking process, is developed. (Totally in my kitchen and used daily.)  Love the colored bowls.

1931 The national anthem, "The Star Spangled Banner." was presented.

Too busy with other stuff to delve back into that, but yes it was amazing and yes the Russians I had the pleasure to interact with were wonderful in every regard, and frankly appeared to be living good lives (maybe enviable lives).  We didn't talk politics but I had the feeling that they did not like Putin (he was in the process of invading Crimea (summer of 2014).  I understood the Communist Party was alive but not a big player as elections, ergo politics were controlled by Putin.  Russia is twice the size of the US and has an  interesting history.  What I saw was beautiful for the most part.

Hopefully I will be writing a short book about the trip in the coming years.  I remember wondering if the politicians and staffers that shape our foreign policy would approach things differently if they got the "tour" I did.  (And of course I wonder how representative my experience was.)

Bill Griffith (1960)

I'm requesting help from people familiar with Cache Creek (the community) and Grafton area history.  one of my sets of great-great grandpareents, Hannah E. Roberts and Jonathan Phillips, were married in Cache Creek in November 1857.  According to Yolo County records the wedding was officiated by Randall Hobart, Minister of the Gospel, and witnessed by A. Jones and George Hatcher.  I am trying to determine if they were married in a church or a home, an dif in a church, what church.  Any help is much appreciated.

Janet Long (Levers) (1966)

Bill Griffith, are you talking about CACHEVILLE? (Yolo, now) and Knights Landing was Grafton.THE YOLO County Archives, located off Beamer St. Between Ashley and Cottonwood are a great resource. You can contact them online, too. Also, you might check with Yolo Co. Historical Society; they're usually at the upcoming County Fair, so if I get contact info, I'll pass it on.

Bill Griffith (1960)

Thanks Janet - Yes, I believe that from reading the county records that what was referred to in the marriage record as Cache Creek must have evolved to Cacheville and subsequently Yolo.  And as for Grafton I believe it the area southwest of Knights Landing and at times even identified as West Grafton and East Grafton.  I'm not sure what the total area was.

Thanks again for your help.  Wish I wasn't so far away and could attend the County Fair again.  It's been a long time.

Marilyn Millsap (Thompson) (1961)

Bill Griffith - As a former Yolo County archivist I am just throwing out a few bits of information for your search for your ancestor's marriage.  There are three entries on Family Search for that marriage.  One gives the "place" as Madison, Yolo, California; one gives the place as Yolo, California; and one gives the place as Cache Creek Judicial Township, California.  If you look at an old Yolo County map you can see that the county is divided into "judicial townships" which were relatively large. As I recall they delineated school districts and some type of court districts.  One of these areas is "Cache Creek Judicial Township" but it is not a specific place and does not refer to the town of Cacheville/Yolo.  It is interesting that one of the records is specific about the place being "Madison" which I would think might be the actual "town."  I think the reference to "Yolo" in the records is to the county.  I don't think there were many (if any) churches in rural Yolo County in the 1850s except Mary's Chapel near Yolo. It's history says it was built in the 1850s but burned down also in the 1850s.  There was a very early Union Chapel on the grounds of the current Woodland Cemetery but if they had been married there I think the record would have been more specific.  Did Jonathan Phillips (or Hannah's father) own land in the Madison area and possibly a home?  My guess is that they were married in the parlor of someone's home.

I do remember that the county archives has information on early churches. They are a good resource to contact either by phone, email or their online records.  Good luck.

Bill Griffith (1960)

Marilyn Millsap - Thank you for your help.  I was not aware of the "judicial townships", which clears up the business of Cache Creek.  Hannah and Jonathan raised their family on a small acreage near Bacchini's Corner and their children attended Eureka School.  It sounds like that location puts the wedding either at Mary's Church before it burned or in a home, most likely the latter.

Thank you, again.

The combined Classes of '61 and '62 Reunion is just 10 days away - August 27th at the American Legion Hall (12:30-5:00) and the next-day, no-host get together at Applebee's Grill & Bar (starting at 11:00).  We have 82 classmates and guests signed up, but as the old saying goes "the more, the merrier."  We still are accepting signups.  Our goal is to provide for our classmates and friends the opportunity to sit down and talk with each other, share memories, and catch up on the years.  We will have a non-intrusive late 50s to 1962 soundtrack running, as well as a continuous video presentation.  Those who checked our YouTube videos heard a couple of the songs and saw some of the photos we use.  The photos certainly bring back memories, and some probably have not been displayed for more than 60 years.  Details are on the Class of '62 website

It is with heavy heart that I have to tell fellow classmates that my love, Andrea Fernandez (Fong), Class of 1967, has passed away. She went to join our Lord on August 22, 2022. After fighting cancer for over 2 years, she developed other complications that caused her death.
