Another Memory question. does anyone else remember, just a little to the west of the corner of Hwy 16 & Poleline Rd the building where they cleaned and processed the fresh asparagus that was grown in the sink of Cache Creek? I used to stop by and buy a huge grocery bag that I would share with mom and dad when I got to their ranch by Knights Landing. Talk about "Fresh" and delicious! And it was March when it was ready to be harvested.

Greg,  that was the King Ranch. And yes your right that was the best. Especially when you bought it home and cooked it that night !  I  tried going some, but our Bassett Hounds would always beat me to it. They new exactly when to pick it.  So we had to settle for second best, and that was King Ranch.

Greg and Elvis,

That was Frank King.  He was also an accomplished tenor banjo player.  He was a member of the Sacramento Banjo Band. That group played every year at the Yolo County Fair on the west side of the grounds near the display of antique automobiles. Another member that I remember in that band was elementary school teacher Jack Martin......both fine musicians!!

I found this online.....I don't see Frank or Jack in these clips...but, they were members of this band.  Go to 8:00 minutes in on the video to hear a little banjo music.  I was surprised to see them on "I've Got A Secret" !!

Fresh asparagus for Easter!  The best.  Just steamed some last night for dinner, Mother taught me how to cook it to be just right. (Cut off the rooting part, split if the stock is too large, steam with lemon juice.)  Greg, Cash Creek Aspargaus the best for freshness I am sure.. Hope I spelled asparagus correctly.

Speaking of the Sacramento Banjo Band; around 2010 (a later incarnation of) the Sacramento Banjo Band latched on to my baratone (and baratone sousaphone) playing brother David (Class of 1962) where he met his then future and now current wife, Maryanne who plays banjo. I had the pleasure of seeing them all perform at a concert in Old Town Sacramento around that time. Some of the other Woodland banjoists and musicians would get together and play at local Yolo County events. To see a great video of Woodlands historical homes as well as some people you all might remember, go to You Tube and type in Woodland California Stroll Through History 2015. David (and his wife with long wihite/blonde hair) is at about 3:16, but the whole video is well worth viewing.

Joel:  Thank you so much for your post of the Stroll Through History video.I love seeing the homes inside and out.  I did see your brother David and his wife Mary presenting the music.  In addition, noticed a few other friends like Greg Kareofelas walking through the homes.  How fun.

Thanks Wally and Elvis. I could not remember "King Ranch", but I do remember how good the asparagus tasted! And Yes, Elvis, trying to grow asparagus can be difficult. The plant really loved the sandy soil by Cache Creek, way different than the soil in my garden. Another one of those great memories of Woodland that I do not have a photo of.

And Good Luck class of 1964 with your reunion plans, you will be glad you made the effort to have it!!

Joel,

Here are a couple of pics of your brother and Mary playing at Aldersons.  I really enjoyed playing with them...they are very good. We played most, if not all the resthomes in town--Palm Gardens, Alderson's, The Califorian, and the Cottonwood facility.  Their group is called "Oh No, The Back Row".  The name was derived from the last group they and I played in....called "Over Forte' ".smiley Standing pic L to R:  Brandon McClintock, Mary Childers, Me, David Childers.

Wally --- My dad was a busy guy when he wasn't teaching.  I remember at one point being able to count either four or five jobs (including teaching) that he held simultaneously over a given twelve-month period, including running our 20-acre walnut farm 5 miles west of town.  He was Director of Special Events at the Yolo County Fair for many years, meaning that he lined up all of the entertainment, among other things.  Worked for Stu Waite and Ron Maraviov, who succeeded Stu.  He would also announce all of the acts as they took the stage.  (Remember ol' Nelle Callahan at the organ ?  Maybe not, but she was a yearly staple, and seemed always to be playing whenever there was a temporary lull in the entertainment schedule.  He could count on her.)  And, as you alluded to, when the Sacto Banjo Band played there (quite a few Fair Sundays at the Rotary Barbecue, as I recall), he would invoke his membership, grab his ax and jump in.  Quite the trifecta every summer, he was always on the move.  Plus, he engaged in a bit of nepotism, as he scored me a job there for four summers----putting a fresh coat of paint on the buildings, cleaning them up and such.  Hey, $ 2.00 an hour, couldn't beat it, right ?  And while Nelle may not have been exactly Steely Dan or Miles, since the stage was only about 30 yards or so from Horticulture on the property, I imagine she must've helped get me through my shifts monitoring that building during Fair hours.

Joan Richter (Lucchesi) (1960)

Jack Martin: thanks for the great memories of the fair. My dad was the accountant for the fair for 50+ years and since our ranch was right next to the fairgrounds, we were always there. I had to smile when you were talking about Nell Calahan and pictured exactly where the stage was outside the AG building. My mom was in charge of all the veggies and getting them signed in for the fair. I miss those fair days.

Thank you for the reply, Jack.  Yes, I DO remember Nelle Callahan...you ARE going back.smiley

I remember talking to your dad later in life. He told me about the nice banjo and guitar that he had.  Sadly, he also told me that he wasn't able to play them anymore because of the condition of his hands..arthritis?  Knowing how much he loved to play, I felt how devastating that must have been for him.

Steve Takimoto (1966)

I just want to let you know that my sister Lois (Takimoto) Kawata passed away yesterday morning. The day before yesterday she spent most of the day in ER because of a severe nosebleed that her caregiver could not stop at home.  Due to her ALS (aka Lou Gehrig's Disease) condition and one plugged up nostril (nosebleed) she had difficulty breathiing.  She opted to go home, with an oxygen tank, instead of being "admitted".  She stopped breathing at home yesterday morning, and her caregiver, then EMT's, could not revive her.

I know that she made connections through this site/forum from almost every graduating class, and she enjoyed them even though it was very tedious for her because she used her blinking eyes to type on her special computer.

Thank you Gary, Robert Cowing and others(?) for helping her/us with assistance that she needed with this site.

Steve,  very sorry for your loss.  Your sister Lois sent me a few personal messages which were so lovely.   She enjoyed the butterfly pictures that Greg Kareofelas had taken, which I shared on our forum.  She was strong in spirit.

Hi, Steve. I did not know Lois, but did enjoy her posts. She had such a loving and strong spirit. My prayers will be for comfort and peace for you and your family.

Steve, I am sorry to hear about Lois.  She was such an inspiration; I feel blessed to have know her.  Conversing online, if you didn't know she had ALS, you never would have guessed it from her cheary, positive personality in the message forum.  And then to realize she controled the keyboard with her eyes.  Wow, talk about overcoming adversity.  She will always have a special place in my heart.

Nice Craig. When we lived on the west side of the Cascades, we went to the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival every spring in early April. People would come from as far as Japan and China to see the tulips and daffodils:

Picture 2: The snow geese are an added attraction taking flight out of the daffodil field:
