Jeanne Vaughn is a massage therapist leaving just east of her parents old home (the nursery). She is FABLOUS. I have been going to her for 30 years off and on. Do yourself a favor and call for an appointment.

The name of the drive-in east of the Vaughan Home at 151 West Main Street was Reed & Bell I believe.

Craig...I think that the Marquee was located more like where Marshall's is now...West & Main.  Forgot the name Reed & Bell. Too bad we don't have any real drive- inns any more....My sweet tooth misses them!

Duane - Hope Vicky has a speedy recovery.  Her family used to live across the street from us on Rosewood Way when we were little - early 50's!!!!   Great neighborhood!!

Hi Kathryn Jull,  You were my first baby sitter in our old neighborhood on Rosewood Way back in the early 50's.  We lived on the other side of the street at 811 Rosewood Way.  Do you remember that?  The Burns family were across the street before they moved to Beamer Park.  The Caldwell family lived next door to us and the Porter's and Monroe's were at the end of our street on Coloma Way.  Do you remember any of the other families in that old neighborhood from those days?

Hi Ron & Kathryn,

Myrtle & Ed Jones were at 817, Dollie & Norm Roberts were at 821 when we arrived in 1962. I've recently moved back to Rosewood and the neighborhood is just as wonderful. Great neighbors.

Rosewood Way was a great neighborhood.  We moved there and lived on the SE corner of Rosewood and Coloma Way in 1949-50.  We liked the block so much we then moved down the street to 828 Rosewood in about 1953-4.  My folks moved away from Rosewood in 1965.  In 1958, 59 and perhaps 60, we had an annual 4th of July parade.  People from all over the city came to watch us walk up and down the street.  It was loads of fun.  Kathie can tell you the name of all the families that lived around us.

Bibbet and Craig, ok then where was the Round House?

My family used to live at Rosewood Way in the 1960's.  We lived at 829 Rosewood Way.  We lived next door to the Snipe"s.  The Julls use to live across the street, but I don't remember the number.

Craig M. -- Hooked on Game of Thrones for quite some time now, and yes a good show, good acting and some really good scenerios. We just introduced our friend to the show too. They are hooked too. We also like the show The Vikings.  My favorite just for the fun of it is Castle. It is not big on the acting, just like the show. Then i hit the History and Discovery station up. Good ole HGTV even gets some of our time. We put it on for the dogs when we leave, and do you think they have learned to remodel the bathrooms (3.5) and the Kitchen yet? My gosh you would think by now the min pin could swing the hammer, and the other two Jack Russells could do the framing. They are all jumpers with speed talent.

I am off to Utah tomorrow at 5 am to go visit the daughter and the grandkids, but also see some friends and go to their cabin in Idaho, and quad ride into Yellowstone. They are ten minutes from it. Just beautiful area where their cabin is . I am also missing some of this hot desert heat that has come real early this year in the tripple didgits already. Tuni

While Googling Rosewood Way I was interested in looking at the old WHS from a birds eye view. I do believe you can see the water fountain that our class of 66' donated. It has been a few years since visiting the fountain. Anyone else remember this?

Tootie....How 'bout on Main Street in the old Purity Plaza...about where the coffee place is now? I think the Timko family ran that.  (Hi! Tootie)

Ron...that's where I fell? off the top bunk bed!  A block over on Buena Tierra were The Joe Zane, Erikson, Hartwig, Wetzel, Ward?, and George Zane families. Jerry and Susie Blickle are still on Homewood. I think the Crawford Addition was built so that the soldiers and their families had a place to live after the war.

Bibbet,

You are right about the Crawford Subdivision.  Bill Crawford built those homes for the returning GI's who had nowhere to live with their new families following WWII.  I don't know the exact details, but I seem to remember that their cost was very nominal and suspect that he didn't make very much money off that venture, but wanted to help the men just back from the war.

Hi Janice Danielson Hoagland.  Your family bought your house on Rosewood Way from the Haydens.  Those were turbulent times.  Hope all is well with you.

Lovely to read about all the families sharing their childhood times from their neighborhoods in Woodland.  The Stroll Through History this coming September should be more interesting after noting all these tales.  Enjoy the days of summer.  The cool mornings are a treat!   The book about Woodland, "Go Play Outside" sounds interersting.

Do you know what the date is yet for the Stroll Through History?...Would be great if it is around the time of the Reunion... ( After all our historical reminiscing!!!) I remember that it is usually in September.

I have the Stroll Throught History as September 6, 2014, Saturday.  It is two weeks before before our Class Reunion, September 20th.  I will check again, but that is what I have on my calendar.

Yes, Fran, it is September 6th.  You can go to wwwstrollthroughhistory.com and get all the information on the Woodland Stroll.  It is the 26th Year.  A lovely web page.  Some other people may also be interested.

There is an incredible book entitled "CRAFTING A VALLEY JEWEL by David L. Wilkinson. It was published in 2003 by the Yolo County Historical Society (POBox 1447, Woodland, CA 95776). It is available at Amazon, Google books, Barnes and Noble, etc. The soft cover volume is about $9.00. (There is also a very pricey ($90) hard cover version.) This book will knock your socks off. It is a must for anyone who visits this website. Though touted as an architecture book, for us who grew up there, this book is pure nostalgia. It contains pictures and discriptions of homes and buildings throughout Woodland and I mean hundreds of them...many that have since been demolished. These are not just the old victorians; these are the houses, buildings, churches, etc. that we and our friends grew up with. Examples: Purity Market (old picture), State theatre interior, Porter theatre, Nugget Market (early 50's), Pepsi bottling Co., the Rice Mill, the Train Depot, the Flyers Club, Porter building, Library, Dingle School, Maxwell school, Woodland High, Roundhouse Restaurant, Cranston's, the YMCA, and a house on virtually every street in the Woodland we grew up in. You get the idea. I think I can safely recommend the $9.00 soft cover edition.

Sorry everyone - Amazon is now charging way more than $9 for the paperback version.   CRAFTING A VALLEY JEWEL by David L. Wilkinson sounds like a really interesting book, but not worth $85?
