The book, Crafting a Valley Jewel sounds great Joel.  I went under Yolo County History, and found pages from the book, and also the Gibson Manner offers the book for $21.  Maybe at the Stroll Through History, this book will be available.  I do know that the House Dresser, the lovely antique shop on Main Street, also carries historical books of Woodland.  There are some options for us all to add to our history libraries.

The Yolo County Historical website also has books for sale. Also every year at the old School house at the Fairgrounds, during the Fair, you are usually able to buy some of the Historical Society books.

The link to the website for the Yolo County Historical Society is:

www.yolonet/ychs/pubs.htm

Theresa, you are right ; the Stroll Through History usually has books for sale too. Joel is right, the books are pure nostalgia  and remind us how lucky we all were to grow where and when we did.

Have to chime in one more time...Went to Amazon and searched " Yolo County Historical Society" and the most fascinating book came up as the first item. ( among several Woodland books).   It is part of the "Images of America" series and is titled " Woodland" . This is part of a series on America and was written by the Yolo County Historical Society in 2012. Unfortunately  there aren't many copies left. I did order it and could not put it down. Full of historical pictures beginning in the late 1800s. The publisher may have more copies or if you call the Historical Society direct they may have copies.

Frances, thanks so much for telling us about the book "Woodland" from Images of American.  I found it on Amazon and just for kicks, since I am a member, I went to Barnes and Noble to see if they had it.  They did, for $1.00 cheaper!  Thought I would get free shipping also, because I am a member but I guess this book doesn't qualify since it comes from another vendor.  Oh well, still saved a dollar!  It looks wonderful and I can't wait to get it!

Thank you Robert for listing the Yolo County History online information.  I have found some wonderful things on that webpage.  I have ordered the Crafting a Valley Jewel from the Yolo County Historial Society, to add to my other history books about Woodland.  It is fun to read the names of people you totally know and grew up with.  The old Woodland Memorial Clinic before it moved to Gibson Road, is very interesting to look back upon.  Reading some of this history reminds me of The Twilight Zone!  Great reading and research!!

The Yolo County Historical site is really great.  I did look up some people from their obituary listing and found Mrs. Marilyn Hodgson (passed March 2 ,2005) who lived on college street and I babysat for her son Tim Hodgson and sister.  The sister was only three years old at the time.  I was trying to connect with Tim to find out how his sister is doing. I see he is living in Sacramento.  The father was Thomas E. Hodgson, an attorney in town.  He has also passed.  They were a very lovely family.  Wish I could connect with Tim.

The original Woodland Clinic was very mysterious to me. One big waiting room.   I recall going to Dr. Robinson and Dr. Burns.  My sister, JoAnne Eve, was delivered by Dr. Robert R. Hanson, the first day Dr. Hanson started working at the Woodland Clinic.  As Mother would take JoAnne in for her check ups, age 1 - 3, Dr. Hanson would walk around with her telling everyone she was the first baby he delivered there.   I see now that he has a senior center building dedicated in his honor by his family.  Some great doctors at the Woodland Memorial Clinic.

Cheryl Matter (Fowler) (1963)

I did an internship with the Woodland Clinic in the early 60s, after I completed my training as a medical assistant.  My mother worked for the Woodland Clinic doctors back in the 50's and 60s.   Dr. Hanson was wonderful - he was my doctor as a child, and also for my children and grandchildren.  He was a very special person.   I was so pleased to see the new facility named for he and his wife.  Yes, Theresa, there many wonderful doctors at the Woodland Clinic.......

I see that someone posted how well they like a local Doctor........My wife had her family doctor for our child when I came home in 68 and he was somewhat good until we had problems with our second child in 72, and then he was just a plain ******.........He fired her and stopped caring for our child, never did really trust the man...........Can't remember the names of the ones that treated me, but Woodland did have Doc that came to house at one time, that's before the profession became a business and they relied  E-Rooms.   Of course I could be jaded, don't need'em till you need'em, then you need'em.....................Anyone know what has happened to the Caddie Dealer and the location he had on the corner of College and Court street..........I've not been in Wpodland for years, other than the Decade Reunion and the Fairgrounds......................Side Bar.....(that's for you Craig).......Vicki is doing very well after her attack, getting stronger everyday, looks I get to keep her around for many more years................Cheers All

I was talking wth someone the other day about Beatniks and that era. Does anyone remember a 'coffee' house on the Kiesel Crossing road?  I went there a couple of times but don't  remember with whom. I had no wheels so someone else was the driver. Pretty scary place as I recall. Funny cigarettes were present with the coffee and poetry.

Doyle,  I have contact info for Gary Bennett.   My dentist in the Porter Bldg. was Otis Bennett, no relation to Gary.

My mother (Ethel) was the office manager for Dr. Blevins in the Porter Building. Brodie's kids would come to the office for medical care. Dr. Blevins had 49er season tickets and would give my mother tickets for a game every year. It was a big deal to go to a game in SF at Kezar stadium. Dr. Neuman joined the practice before they moved out of the Porter Building to an office on Court Street. Dr. Blevins was a true gentleman.

i remember one time i went to Dr. Blevins house on 1st street and John Brodie was there.  He was either just on the 49ers or still going to stanford.

Morning  All!

I remember going to Dr. Blevins and Nichols to get a shot because I had stuck myself with a lead pencil, then in 12/66 my Mom took me to his office on a Saturday for blood test so i could get married.  He did it for Vicki and I and cleared it with the county recorder on that Saturday, and then Mom took me to the country court house and got the county recorder to issue our marriage license so we could get married the next day. ( Was good to have the city Fire Chief as your step father at the time )  I think their office was in the building on the corner of College and Main, above the old McKinney Bldg?  Next time I dealt with them was for my Police Reserve physical in 1970.....They had moved to the corner bldg on Court and West Street I believe, all and all great Doc's for the time.  My best memories for a dentist was a fellow named Nelson and he had his office accross from the Hospital on West Street.  At the time I thought he was the best in the world and never hurt me at all when he worked on my teeth.........

My dentist was also in the Porter Building. His name was Dr. Stintson or Stinson. I remember getting a tooth extracted in the 6th grade. I think that was my first experience with Novacaine.

My doctor at the clinic was also Dr. Hanson. He was gentle and kind. Sometimes I saw Dr. Bill Robinson.

I remember that big waiting room, too.  And the occasional house calls.

I just finished Bill Griffith Jr. book "Go Outside and Play". It was an interesting read and brought back some memories of our childhoods.  If anyone would like it, I will gladly put it in the mail to you or I can bring it with me to the reunion.

Have to disagree, Robert.  Dr. Don Fisher used to beat me up so badly.  That was back when there were no "children's" dentists.  Also, my mother Doris used to work for Drs. Blevins and Neumann when they were on Court St.  Blevins was my doc and, yes, was a true gentleman.  I remember reading in Sports Illustrated once that John Brodie had married "wisely" when he married Doc's daughter, but didn't they end up divorced ?

I too worked for Dr. Blevins when I was in High School.  I remember Ethel Damsen well. I always think of estee lauder when I think of her.  Diane Hawke also worked there at the time. (Bob & Susie's mother) Did any of you stand in line to get John's autograph?  He signed somewhere in town. Dr. Blevins was my great uncle.  Sue and John Brodie are still married.  John has had a stroke and isn't quite himself anymore.  Drs. Blevins & Nichols were never partners....just in the same time frame. Back in the day oif house calls...even in the country!
