For those of you who new my sister, Charlott (class of '67), I'm very sad to report that she passed away last Thursday afternoon.  I will write more about her in the "Memeory" section, at a later date.  She will be greatly missed.

Brain freeze--I don't even REMEMBER the Anne Frank production, but I do recall "Our Town" being staged at the State Theatre with Michael Shanafelt in a leading part. It was very well done, too, and I credit Ed Sugars.

JoAnn Kergel (Wirth) (1965)

Anne Frank was done the year we were juniors.  (Class of 65.)  Anne was played by Jan Orrick who lives between Wdld & Portland, OR. Sue Shearer played Anne's sister. It was produced in a 3/4 round in a church activity room.  Dingle stage had issues and we could no longer use their auditorium.  Ed Sugars directed with much help from Miki Sayer, student director and all around gopher.  It was a fun production and about 5 years ago I got to help produce this play at a local high school here in Eugene, OR.

Dear Stan,

Besides being next door neighbors, Charlott and I shared the same classrooms in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades. If you don't have these class photos, I can sure share them with you.

I'm so sorry for your loss.

Wally

Here is a picture of the chicken coop Rotary did for the Sience and Technology Academy in Knights Landing.  The kids are really into their chickens there, especially Ms. Karen Flory's class, to official chicken keepers.

Gary,  what a great community project.  Looks like the kids really love their new chicken coop.  Thanks for sharing the photo.

Some thoughts along the way:

Tom Stewart, Thank you. I finally figured out how to access the profiles pages and thank you again. Sorry, that you decided to take a break but I understand. Though, I don't much care to debate religon with anyone , I respect beliefs. You are an amazing writer. You convey your thoughts without malice or judgement and they are a pleasure to read. And, aside from religon, your posts and pictures are the best. It must be a pleasure to wake up every morning, weather excluded, in your home. It seems that you have found peace within your self, but it has been a trip with a few zigs and zags, but you are true to yourself and that I respect. That comes through in all your writings. Myself, I adhere to the Joel Childers school of religon. I believe in God but I couldn't tell you the absolute reason why. I know the "Lords Prayer", "Now I lay me down to sleep", "Do unto others before they do unto you", That is not how that goes is it? And, finally, "Yea though I walk through the vally of death I will fear no evil 'cuse I am the meanest _ _ _ _ in the valley" Vietnam reference, sorry. But I hope you get my point. You are a class act.

Robert Cowing,What happened to you? All I hear now is rant and attack. You attack Craig Mayfield, Tim Tucker, Dave Stotts, Melanie and Paul. And relativism, that's as far ranging as religon. You are taking cheap shots at everyone that does not agree with you. If negative debat is what you want, please go to one of the sites you recomended. You seem like a professenal bloger that has found a closed site you can moderate and control through initmidation. Not going to work. I believe it is called WHS 60s reunion site not Robert Cowing Blog. On a side note that may not make any sense to you. Years ago, some where between 6th and 9th grade I was upstairs in your house bantering with Eric, and I thought I had him on a point that I don't even remember. Short pause and he said  "Oh, just something else for me to conquor" End of discussion, no malice, no rant, no rave. I have never forgoten that and have used it when things get dicey. It makes me think and rethink situations, more thought, more research, or GOD forbid, maybe I'm wrong

C R A I G   M A Y F I E L D, Need I say more. First of all I am not a hater. I quite enjoy Craig on occasion lol First of all, most of us, ie. Robert, and everyone else, are on the opposite end of the spectrum than Craig. Not a bad thing. lol Robert and Tom, I really do love and respect you Tom, if you have really gone back and read Craig's post you will realize that he is absolutely not non God. Craig's post are filled with ?, what if, maybes, maybe nots. He is asking you to think. Tom, you are amaster at prose and so is Craig in  different ways.Clarity and content come in many ways. You just have to work harder with Craig. Tom, I really believe that Craig respects you as much as I do.  On the othwer side of the coin, what ever you percieve, smoking a bong, cocktail in hand, Craig is laughing at you. He is sitting in front of his computer throwing out whatever and waiting for a bite and it doesn't take long. That is what I love about Craig's posts, he can light you up at will. I don't profess to understand all of his quips, but they are interesting.

With respect to my very good friend from Jackson St. and Beamer Park, Dave Stotts, I will end on a "light and entertaining " note.  You know that light at the end of th tunnel that we didn't even know was there in the 60's, well most of us can see it now, some brighter than others. Be true to your beliefs and the only way you are forgoten is if every one forgets you. NONE OF US ARE GETTING OUT OF THIS ALIVE!!! Finally, thank GOD for modern medicine and Jack Daniels

Does anyone remember the old band uniforms?

03/01/15 08:58 AM #1939

Theresa Eve (1964)

Jenny:  I do remember you from Woodland High School Band, and I also remember those uniforms.  They never fit well and the hats were always too big for me.  However, Band was not my best experience in life.  I have to really hand it to all those students who were talented and could play like the wind.  I had to convience my parents that Bands was not for me, and to let me take another class. Finally I started taking piano lessons from Joyce Ann Canevari, who lived on Gibson Road.  That was my most enjoyable experience with music.  Wish I could have just kept taking lessons from her later on in life.  She was the best memory with music for me.  The uniforms and Woodland High School Band, was not a good memory for me, just one of those things.

Hi Theresa - ugh! I know what you mean about those old uniforms. The wool-like material itched, the hats were too big and they didn't flatter one's shape in the least.  But - the new uniforms were pretty nifty!  Talk about BIG hats!!  LOL (Sorry about the picture). I'm glad you were able to find joy in playing the piano.

Jenny:  Sweet picture of you in the "big" Hat.  Who is the young man next to you?  Was he in the Band?

Jenny Johnson (Norman) (1966)

Thanks, Theresa. I believe that is Dan Norton (Danny). I'm sure he was in band too but I don't know any other info.  Anyone out there have any info on Danny?

James Crandall (1961)

I suppose during my band days at WHS we wore what you call the old uniforms.  I remember them being heavy wool felt and very hot.  I wasn't in the  marching band but whatever the other band was called, I think advanced or concert band.  I took another music class that was about theory and composition.  I enjoyed those two classes so much.  However as part of the class requirements we had to done the uniforms and play a concert twice during the year, one being commencement, outside in the searing sun.   Music is a big part of my life, almost every day will find me playing something.  I just wish I had some talent.  I was always a fast learner but would quickly plateau, and could never seem to climb to any heights.  We are lucky here in San Diego to have an organization that sponsors live acoustic music several times a month in a small venue.  Artists are all over the map.  Tonight we are headed to one of the concerts where a young Irish acoustic group is playing.  Last month we saw for about the 5th time, the Hot Club of Cowtown a Django inspired Gyspy jazz and old school western swing kind of group.   Every time I see one of these groups I pine to return in another life with talent to spread.  One the latest fascinations is this group of four girls from Europe called Katzenjammer they have been around for awhile, so maybe you have heard of them.  They are new to me. They are best seen live so their enthusiasm comes through.  They share about 15 instruments between them and switch for just about every tune.  Maybe this YouTube link will work.

Joel Childers (1966)

I remember those awful uniforms and terible band hats.  We marched in the Chinese New Year Parade in San Francisco and I got a spliting headache. Partly from the hat, and partly because I was playing the cymbals. We marched at half-time at the East-West Shrine game at Stanford. And it seems like we marched in Winters every year. What was the name of their parade? Anyway, band was a blast for me. Sorry you didn't dig it, Theresa. Like you, I took piano lessons (Mrs. Bentz on 3rd Street). It's a great hobby. When my knees finally give out, I'll still be playing my piano. Did I mention here before that brother Brian Childers just moved away from Woodland for the first time (finally cut the imbilical cord) at the tender age of 68. Went to live in a quiet part of Oregon.

Very interesting group!  Thanks for sharing. Always nice to hear different groups. My most recent favorites are Pentatonix, Dante Bucci and Victor Wooten.

At WHS I played in the marching band, concert band and pep band, and six of us played in our own little Tijuana Brass style band (plus we made a record!). I remember that long, LONG commencement night playing the Pomp & Circumstance March in the sun at graduation!  Highlights in HS for me were the Santa Rosa Honors Band, the Northern California Honor band in Chico under Clifton Williams (Texas), and the SF Chinatown parade, and, of course, all the fun football games.  I thought the most fun in our little 6-piece band was playing at the County Fair, at the Almond Festival (Winters?) off the back of flatbed truck, for a dance for the Rotary Club (?), and in a ceremony for the Eastern Star group (and a bunch of other places).  Making our record album was a wonderful adventure too! When in college I played in all the available school bands plus a 16th century quintet.  I figure I played my horn at least 6 hours every day, not including practicing.  I just don’t have enough air today. Well, my kids would say I can find enough hot air – just not enough forced air to create very good music. Lol

How funny, Joel, that your brother has decided to leave Woodland at 68!  But then Oregon is a great place to live (and close enough to Woodland to visit frequently).

Jenny and Joel:   I do remember the China Town Parade in San Francisco was quite an exciting event, which I did enjoy.    All the different bands you mentioned from Woodland like Varsity, Dance, Concert were fun to hear and presented some very talented students.   You are very talented Jenny, as I know all the Childers boys are.  Good memories to reflect upon.  I do recall the Woodland Christmas Parade as adding a spark to the holidays.   So all the Childers boys have moved on out of Woodland.  The path of leaving the home town comes at various times.  But, returning can be a great visit either in person, or in a moment remembered.

Hi Melanie McKinzie

A belated answer to your question of last month. I had to wait until I got back to the Corkwood to make sure which waitress I was talking about. It is the waitress named "Kim", and she always remembers Mom when I biring her in for dinner (and is very happy that the restaurant re-opened and has her job back!) - Kind of fun seeing how many people were there again last night.

cheers, greg

James-

Thanks for that video...hadn't heard of them but I like it! We're in Chico which also has a very active music scene with Sierra Nevada Brewery Big Room, the University and many clubs that have ongoing music passing through as well as a lot of local talent as well. I was never in the High School band but was in a rock group then and never stopped being interested in new music. Some of our present favorites are the California Honeydrops, the Subdudes, Paul Thorn and Curtis Salgodo but always looking for someting new so thanks again! We love going to music festivals which expose us to new groups and give us another excuse to travel, meet lots of fellow music lovers, drink good beer and eat good food. A year ago we even went back to Woodland to see Pablo Cruise play oudoors- ran into alot of old compadres.Got any other suggestions?
