Does anyone recall the name of the local Woodland band that featured  Bob Carter, Mike Thompson, Don Bickle and one other guy. (the drummer) ?  They were excellent.

Vern Larson (1960)

I used to buck hay with Bob Carter's older brothers Bill & Raymond. Bob used to drive the trucks for us while we bucked the hay.  Bob was thinking about starting a group and he and Mike Thompson came over to my house and we played as a trio. I was on the piano. This was before Don Bickle and we didn't have a drummer.  Bob taught me a few rifts on the guitar which I still play to this day.  I went away to BYU to college and lost track of the group.  Circa 1960

Tim, They were called the Challengers. Bobby carter & Thompson played lead guitar, Tom Allen played bass, Richard Lucero played drums, Phil Sheaner played the sax, Jerry Bally played lead guitar later with the group and Doug Smith from the bay area played the piano.   The Challengers. I do not remember Don Bickle playing with them.

Thanks Doyle. "The Challengers".......Good times at the Fairgrounds and the N.G. Armory.

Joel, Love your wit and wisdom, "grasshopper". So "the master" is moving north. I'll always remember his wit and wisdom in high school and when he and Craig Riggins got together no one was safe. He could insult me in the morning and I never figured it out until the afternoon. Dumb jock, was I,  I guess. How far north is he getting to us?  What part of Wa. are you in and how long have you been here.

CRAIG ROBERTS. Brian is way down on the Oregon coast, quite a ways from us. Yes, he and Craig Riggins were mischief makers. Craig and I worked at the Beacon Hill Lodge up at Soda Springs one winter around 1969 (?). He and his wife had a cabin up there. Those were some wild and crazy times. We had all the free skiing and snowmobiling we wanted. I remember when the bartender , Jules, from New York City, took the snowmobile out on the frozen lake, doing spinnies. Sure enough...crack!...blub...blub...blub. That was the end of the snowmobile and free riding. I left there in a 1938 Chevrolet Hearse. (No joke). Me and a guy I met drove that thing down to (near) Yosemite where it broke down. We hitchhiked to Bakersfield and could not find a piston for that car anywhere; so as far as I know, it's still sitting there. The next time (and last time) I ran into Craig Riggins, he was living on a houseboat in Sausalito. If you're out there Craig R., I hope you survived "the good times."  And all you others out there who read this stuff but don't chime in; let us hear from you.

Joel-

Loved your Chevy story.. I moved up to Tahoe about and hour after our graduation party with Marty Carrion in 1968 in my 1941 yellow Chevy soon to be followed by Bob Bennett, Paul Richied , Mark Shastain and can't remember who else (are you out there?) Great car but even though Marty and I worked all summer as busboys at Harvey's Casino, we partied so much that at the end of the summer I couldn't afford  enough oil to make it back to Woodland. Burned up the motor and sold it for $150. Biggest car regret of my life (and there were many) Anybody know what happened to that car?

Craig Riggins, a great guy.  I knew him in Mr. Gordon's art class.  He was a great artist and so funny.  We had so much fun in that class.  Wish I knew where he is now days.  Leaving that class was so hard.  Just loved to go to that class each day.  I know Mr. Gordon made us be quiet and get to work more than once.  Craig drew a church in watercolor and ink which I still have.

Most likely when the band played in Winters, it probably was for the Winters' Youth Day.  I'm not sure they still have that parade or even if they still have Youth Day but we had some really good times there after I met my husband, Manuel Martinez, who was raised there.

Joel,

Great story about the car. But, you really rattled a few brain cell I thought were dead with the story about Soda Springs. My Dad and I ( dad 90% me 10%) built a cabin in what was called Serene Lakes, behind Soda Springs in late 1965. Over the tracks, by Lake Van Norden or just Norden, a few miles down the road and there it was. Did you ever get back there? I went off to college, WSU, after that but afew years later John Isgreen moved up to Plavada in his parents cabin and became a general contractor/ ski instructor year round. He worked between Plavada, Soda Springs, and Boreal I think. Dave Buchignani would go up from Woodland and help John out from time to time until he finally moved to Truckee to work full time. I would go visit both of them during Xmac break from school and stay at our place. To make a long story longer, I spent a few nights in the Beacon Hill Lodge with John and friends. Yes wild and crazy. Did you or Craig ever run into him? Also, did Jules the bartender,, have medium length dark hair and a Jersy, or Queens accent? That snowmobile could have been driven into the lake by any number of people in that bar. lol

Craig Riggins, Sausalito, houseboat, the 60's!!!     The stars were certainly alligned for that. It doesn't get any more perfect.

That car thing, that could have been done by any of you Dave, Brian or Joel. Only in the 60's.

Craig, I was always impressed by your Dad. Educator, retailer, innovator ( Woodland's 1st self service car wash, on East Street.) I didn't know about his carpentry skills. A true Renaissance man. Also, from what I recall, a true gentleman.

Joel Childers (1966)

Well, that short description does fit Jules the bartender. I'd say his accent was Queens rather than Joyzee. And I believe it was, in fact, Lake Norden that he sank the Snowmobile in.

Hi WHS Classmates!  Someone had suggested posting some reasons to visit the state we currently live in....soooooo, here goes....  I moved to Minnesota from CA in 2006.  I didn't have a clue what I was in for "weather-wise".  However, I have rediscovered that people are the same no matter where we live.  We all have the same basic needs and there are kind and unkind people.  (BTW, I really don't like the "MN Nice"....if you ever want to know why, message me. smiley)  Here I am in the Land of 10,000 Lakes.  It's really beautiful with all the flora and fauna.  I am very impressed with all the wildlife.  I could actually become a bird watcher having come up close and personal with the likes of Cardinals, Finches, Owls, Robins, Blue Jays, and Orioles, to name a few.

We live on a lake and I love hearing the Owls "hoot"...have even seen Eagles.  Did I mention the "Lightning Bugs"?  I remember the first time I saw those....I said "Tinker Bell, is that you?"  Hahaha....

How about the deer?  They are in abundance, mostly in the winter, but they come in our back yard all year round.  Here's a pix I took two days ago just 1/2 a block from our home.

I'm not sure how much I can post at a time, so I'll post this and continue in a new post....stay posted...  Hahaha....

I'm back...   The winters can get quite harsh here.  Yet there is beauty in that season... here are a couple of photos taken right after we had a blizzard and one showing a "hoar" freeze....which is breathtaking to see.....

Taken out our front door in daylight....

Taken out our front door at dusk....it was too cold to stand outside so I snapped this with the door open and quickly shut it!

Hope you can see the hoar freeze on the limbs of the trees...

Back again...  I love when our granddaughters visit from California.  Here's some photos of our backyard.

My husband built this overlook....he's working on expanding it down the slope to the lake...

Grandblessings Rylan and Kaelyn...

Memory Garden dedicated to my son Ryan...

Enough personal photos...it's really hard to express the beauty and possible points of interest of each state, because each state has so many; however, I'll list a few activities that might draw people here: (not in any particular order)

  • Mall of America (largest shopping mall in the country, includes a theme park)
  • Fishing (Walleye is a favorite), (including Ice fishing), Boating, Hiking, Snow mobiling, Cross Country Skiing/sledding.
  • Amish country tours
  • Minnehaha Park Falls/Lake Minetonaka
  • Skyway System in the Twin Cities (so in the winter you can still get around!)
  • Scandinavian Nordic Museums
  • Minnesota Zoo (The best I have been to)

That's just a few of the things that make this great state wonderful.  I have to admit, I am still a CA girl. I like the winter for about 2 days, then I'm ready for Spring. Hahaha...  My husband is a CPA and has a practice here.  I work with him and have given him my 2 Year notice (haha)...  We bought a place in AZ and will be retiring there.... We're looking forward to a new adventure.  I wonder which classmates might live in AZ?  smiley

Sherry, beautiful photos. I agree with you on the "MN. Nice". I've been around it more than once and after finally figuring out what was going on,  I didn't like it either. Although it was kind of fun to toy with those folks. One person in particular became a lifelong friend.

To Joel Childers

I can't believe that Brian lived in Woodland all those years and we never saw him at a class reunion. Yes, he and Craig Riggins were total cut-ups. Nancy Reynolds has a video of Bob Gordon's art class where Brian and Craig were carrying on. It is hilarious. Mr. Gordon was also captured in the film and he made no effort to control them. In fact, he was caught on camera mugging, as well. I loved my art classes with Bob. They were as crazy and free lance as the one Nancy taped. Maybe if Brian comes to our 50th later this year, tell him I will bring my disk or maybe Nancy will even make one for him. Can't guarantee that, of course. He will have to make that decision.

Sherry Bailey:  Loved each and everyone of your "home" pictures.  The birds and the owl were especially lovely.  What a great surroundings you have.  Thank you for sharing the pictures.

Leslie Hull:  I think we were in the same art class together, with Craig, and Brian acting so funny.  It was the best class ever!!!  Mr. Gordon was the most wonderful teacher and friend.  I will never forget him.  I learned a lot in his class.  Great that you shared the same times.  Seems like yesterday!!!

Woodland Honor Band has arrived back home from the Big Apple---New York City.  Those of you that remember marching in the Rose Parade?  Think that...but amped up about ten times.  This Wind Ensemble is comprised of students from both Woodland and Pioneer High Schools and all had to audition for a chair.

Monday night, March 9th the Ensemble performed at CARNEGIE HALL!  The following day we all bused out to Long Island to do a concert with the Baldwin Senior High band. Another great concert. 122 students strong, 3 different schools, all collaborating for a common goal. Maybe the politicos should take a lesson here!  Don and I have travelled with music students for almost 20 years..they are supportive of each other, courteous to the adults and appreciative of the opportunities offered. They understand music is extremely important in the world.  It is truly a universal language. Travelling with these dedicated young adults is a joy.  High memories in the making.
