I have never met Bobby Geer but I know the name and every time I would hear a person talking about Bobby Geer they would usually have a smile on their face and shaking their heads. I always felt he was the type of person I would get along well with. He must have been quite a fun guy.

Vern-Bobby Geer was quite a character.  I don't know if it was true but the first story that I remember about Bobby was that he had cut up his Mom's mink coat to make a Davey Crockett "Coonskin Cap".  Like I said I don't know if it was just a tall tale or if it was true.  Maybe Liz or Tootie could shed some light on this.  Bobby always had a smile on his face too-he was fun to be around.

Timmy,

As I was writing the forum this morning, I had a strong feeling  that you wouldn't be able to resist a response of your own.  Very nicely done.

Ladies and gentlemen......Mr. Tim Tucker......a master of wit and of course, a Braveheart !!!!!

Thanks all for the information about the crossing and nice to hear from you again Rynne. Hope all is well with you and you are back on our soil..... I too remember safety patrol but I was older and as was said,  it was started (for girls) later. The boys did it at Dingle.  I will have to ask Tootie or Peter what class Liz was in.  That story was rright about the mink coat. I remember when that happened. I think it made one of the papers.

Joan,

Liz was in the class of '64, born in 1946.

Bobby was in the class of '65, born in 1947.  (deceased)

Tootie was in the class of '66, born in 1948.

I didn't know Peter.

The story about Bobby Geer cutting up his mother's mink coat was true.  I saw it.  In the summer, we would always go to City Park and do whatever the activity of the day was.  Paul Giusti, Jack Mills, Bing Crowley and a couple others were playing football and Bobby came across the street wearing the hat. When we asked him where it got it, he said he cut up his mother's mink coat.  Ah, the days of Davy Crockett.  That would be about 1957 when I was 12 so he was about 9.   He then lived on Cross St. across from ther park.

John Monroe's photo.

I regret to report the passing of my old friend John Monroe this morning, Wednesday 7-1-15, after a brief fight with cancer. That is all I know at this time and as I receive more information I will pass it along.

Great to read all the Gibson Road topics.  My Mother, Gwendlolyn Eve, taught at Gibson School for years.  I would walk from the old Woodland High School to Gibson to ride home with her after school.  The signal was a push buttom to cross to the Gibson School.  I did walk with Dr. Chester's son, a nice boy.  Speaking about the beautiful Geer home, it was lovely.  Mary Geer was so beautiful and sweet to all the kids that would gather at her home during the summer months.  That is how I got to know Bobby Geer.  He was very handsome and was a total character.  You had to laugh at everything he said.  He did have a great smile and spark in his eyes, a wonderful thing to add to this world.  Liz and Tootie were just as beautiful as their Mother, Mary.  It was also mentioned about Dr. Blevins, one of those great Woodland Clinic doctors who were the tops.   Remember going to the original Woodland Clinic on Third Street - corrrection and thank you all,  with the big waiting room.   A great Clinic for all.

Hi Theresa

I don't think the Woodland Clinic was  on College, wasn't it over to the east a street or two? It has been a long time since I have been in that part of Woodland. I think the building is still there, used for something else?

Theresa Eve (1964)

Oh, Greg, you are right.  Just thought about that.  The Woodland Clinic was over a few blocks.  Must be getting old!!!  Thank you.  Or, did that building just jump around!!!  Ha!!!

The old Woodland Clinic was on the 600 block of Third St.  I was born in the adjacent hospial on the corner of 3rd and Cross and lived the first 5 years of my life at 651 Third St.  The hospital later became a convalescent hospital.

Robert Cowing (1965)

Yep, you are correct Don aboout the Woodland Clinic.  I was born in one of the hallways along side John Abele's mother.  I think John was born first.  The clinic has been used as a "rest home" and also housing for severely disabled children and young adults.

First time poster, long time reader. Had to pipe in with Bobby Geer story. If you ever came across Bill Freeman and Bobby together, you know where this is going. One summer their mission was to replace the rope swing on the river and I was the lackey. What an education to see these two in action.

What a great shot of the safety patrol kids at Gibson School -- it brought back a boatload of memories.

I participated in the safety patrol about 4 years after that during the 1962-63 year when I was in the 6th grade in Robert Townsend's class

...Robert Cowing.."I was born in one of the hallways along side John Abele's mother.  I think John was born first."

In the hallway?  Were they having a baby boom and not enough rooms or did you just come fast?  I was born there too, as so many of us were!

Dana Lynn Hoover (1967)

I was born there as well.....and 18 years later so was my daughter.  She was one of the last babies born there before they moved to the new hospital. My mother was in the room with Liz Sandrock's mother and we use to talk about our same birth dates.  Dana Hoover

Janet Long (Levers) (1966)

I was born there the day before Mark Mezger, whose mother shared the room (not hall) with my mother.

Tuni Gravink (House) (1964)

I know the Woodland Clinic days all too well, much of my childhood years (begining) i was a patient there having surgeries. It was on Third Street, and yes it did become a convalecent hospital. I worked in the PT room there for sometime. When i was  Freshman i was a Candy Striper at the Woodland Clinic/hospital. If my memory serves me right, Sue Montgomery used to live across the street from it down a few houses.  Seeing the photo of Gibson School, and the safety patrol kids brought back memories. I believe the officer on duty there when school would get out was Officer Anderozzi, he was pretty nice.  He was nice and friendly too all the kids and to the parents, as he knew most of them. Small towns do that.  Liz Geer was the oldest, graduated in my class i believe, them Tootie, and Bobby and Peter Geer were added to the family. When i lived there it was Liz and Tootie, and Bobby. But before that when we built our house there Dr. O'Hara was in the house. I am sure the other people lived there way before we moved there.  They were all so good about letting us cut through thier driveway to get to the school, and many times, both families would say "Hi" to us as we passed through. It was a totally different time then  compared to now. Tuni

To Gail Smith Maxwell -

My mother and Mrs. Abele both had Dr. "Skeet" Railsback (sp?) and both women arrived at the hospital at same time in the same expectant condition(s) and all the delivery roms were occupied.  Mr mother later related that poor "Skeet" did the best he could with what was avaialble.  Later on, both my mother and Mrs. Abele would often laugh about the experience. I asked Mrs. Abele a couple of times to retell the experience. She said, "Well, Robert, your mother and I just did what comes natural !"

Gail Smith (Maxwell) (1964)

Robert, that is hilarious!  Doing what comes natural!  Thank goodness there were no complications with either one of you!  Dr. Railsback souds very familiar but I have no idea if he is the one who delivered me.  I was a complicated birth, breech, and my mother swore she would never go through childbirth again as it was pretty hard on her.  I was an only child for 16 years and then whoops!  My half brother came along.  She had no problems with that delivery though.  Guess I am the problem child!  wink

In 1943 Dr. Thomas E, Cooper and Dr. John G. O'Hara worked at the Woodland Clinic. I assume Davis did not have a Hospital then.

Gail - It is funny that you mentioned "complications." I said the same thing to my mother after hearing the story of double birthing in the hall about she and Mrs Abele being fortunate that there were no compllications or difficulties.  My mother looked at me and said, just below yelling level, "Are you kidding! ? You weighed over 10 pounds ! !

07/05/15 10:26 AM #2146

Gail Smith (Maxwell) (1964)

Robert - that is funny!  And not, for your mother!  I have one grandchild that weighed over 10 pounds and two others who were over 9 pounds.  I don't know how my daughter-in-law did it but kudos to her!
