Bad news for Holy Rosary archive pictures. I did a slide show for the Holy Rosary 130th event and had access to their "archives". Basically there aren't any saved pictures for our era. Some voluteers decided to clean out old stuff, a few years ago, and discard it. They kept some very old archives and some fairly current ones the rest is gone, as far as I know.

As many of the Holy Rosary alumni know, my 10 yrs. at Holy Rosary was rocky at best. However ther are memories, be they good or bad. I would like to see some photos from our era if anyone has them to post, or you can contact me and I'd be happy to scan them for you.

Best regards,

Bernie Rocksvold

My sister, JoAnne Eve, has a Holy Rosary Graduation picture.  The old class rooms at Walnut Street.  I know Tony Canevari was in her class and Sara Romey.

Great picture Theresa. What year would that be? I remember the Franciscan nuns. that taught kindergarten there. to be way friendlier than the Holy Cross nuns at Holy Rosary Academy. If you went to kindergarten there, I was probably in your class.

Thanks Bernie for the "Holy Rosary Archive" info, that is sad.

When we (class of 62) did our website, I posted all the pix I had (thru 8th grade) but that is on the class of 62 website, not this one. Tomorrow I'll check around and see if I can repost them all on this site (all 60's) that might spur others in to posting the other years

Yes, Sisters of the Holy Cross, Kindergarten; by the church - picture is June 1961. Had to go back into my scrapbooks to see the dates.  I did not attend Woodland schools until High School.   I went to San Jose, Dixon and then Casheville in Yolo, California.

An old classmate asked about it, so I thought I'd throw this out on the Forum: The Porter Building was a 3 story building on Main Street in Woodland, north side near College Street, that was mostly doctors offices as I remember. That is where my siblings and I would go to see Dr. Blevins, Dr. Newman, or our dentist, Dr. McNally (sp?) (I still remember that smell of burning tooth enamal as he drilled with those horrid archaeic drills!) One day after school, 8th grade at Harriet-Lee, I was running around in the Porter Building with a neighbor when we were stopped in the elevator by a plain clothes police officer and hauled down to the station for questioning. They never bothered to tell us what they were after. I presume someone had broken into an office and heisted some drugs or something. So I got home late, got heck, and of course I never forgot about it. Still, most memories of growing up in Woodland and the environs of Yolo County were good and better.

Theresa Eve - the order of nuns who taught at Holy Rosary Kindergarten were not of the Holy Cross order.  They were Carmelites (and....I am stretching my memory here) and they lived across from the north side of the church on Court Street.  Their habits were brown.  The Holy Cross nuns taught First thrugh eighth grade at Holy Rosary Academy, which morphed into Holy Rosary School.  Their habits were black with white stiff collar and that fluted piece on top of their heads.  I attended Holy Rosary schools from Kindergarten to 8th grade.  I too have my Kindergarten photo taken on the steps of the Parish Hall.  Many years ago ... fond memories from those years for the most part.

Carmeliet Nuns, Norma you are so right!  These Nuns were so kind.  They also went out to Yolo to teach us Catechism on Tuesdays after school in the Yolo Town Hall .

My memory of the nuns who taught me in kindergarten in the Parish Hall is that they were Franciscan nuns.

Hello everyone!  It has been awhile since I’ve been online but I want to wish everyone a rewarding Veteran’s Day and share some information:

This last July my 92 yr old dad was awarded a Quilt of Valor for his military service in WWII.  The ceremony took place at St. John’s where he resides.  The room was so emotionally charged, almost everyone had tears.  It was such a heart warming experience to know my dad, who had been nominated to receive the handmade quilt, was so deeply touched, I immediately joined the Roseville chapter of QUILTS OF VALOR - Piece and Comfort Quilts Chapter so I could give the same reward to other Veterans.

Qults of Valor is a national non-profit organization to honor Veterans and First Responders.  Because Woodland High School had so many Vietnam Veterans, I would like to honor all….but I can’t do it by myself.  The Veterans must be nominated.  Anyone can nominate a Veteran IF the form can be filled-out, providing confidential information.  Go to:  qovf.org or search for Quilt of Valor Nomination Form.

On February 28, 2020,  Quilts of Valor will be celebrating Vietnam Veteran’s Day……and I would like to have Woodland High School grads send as many Vietnam Veteran Nominations as possible.  There will be a ceremony to award the hand-made quilts to our honored recipients.  The quilts are lovingly made and come with a storage “pillow case”.  They also have a label stitched to the quilt with the recipient’s name, branch and dates of service and who made the quilt.

Tomorrow, on Veteran’s Day,  at St. John’s on Woodland Ave. at 10:30 AM there will be a ceremony honoring 5 Veterans. (I think 4 are in their 90’s).  It will be in the Chapel at the front of the facility for anyone wanting to attend…..bring some tissue….you might just need it!

Remember, if you want to nominate someone, do it right away!  Download the form, fill it out and mail it in….that is all you have to do!  Questions?  Contact Kaye-Allen@hotmail.com

I'm pretty sure Norma is correct. The nuns who taught kindergarten were Carmelite not Franciscan as I thought. They did live on Court St. accross the street from the chuch. I think the Franciscan nuns taught in some of the Sacramento parochial schools.

Dr.s Fisher and Otis Bennet were both dentist who had offices in the Porter building. Dr. Bennet was a graduate of WHS, class of 1930 with my Dad. He was our family dentist and did everything, no dental assistants or hygenist then. When the water cooled drill came out  I was one of his first victims, uh, patients, he tried the drill on. I don't know who was wetter when he finished, me or him.

Many thanks for all the Veteran's, for their service, honor, and bravery.  Freedom is never free.

Oh, yes I went to Dr. Fisher also.  Never forgot that old Porter Building.  Finally, children's dentistry came into fashion.

Dr. Otis Bennett was my only dentist from early grammar school thru high school.  He did have dental assistants.  The first was a lady whose name i don't recall.  She was replaced by Mrs. Koehn, the mother of my classmate, Dennis Koehn.   I always thought Dr. Bennett owned the elevators as the name OTIS was on them.   He was a smoker and after he gave me the shot of novocaine, he would go to another room and have a cigarette until the novocaine took effect.  He would wash his hands but smelled heavily of cigarettes.

Julie Eis (Millstein) (1962)

Our dentist was Dr. Fisher, a friend of my father.   Just the sound of the drill gave me a headache.  Novacaine began working about the time we got home. Then I'd throw up.  My sister, the lucky one,  got to be sedated prior to her visits because she once bit Dr. Fisher.  When he died, his equipment went to a dental museum.  So, whenever I hear how wonderful it was in the good old days, I - who had quite a few cavities - remember how much we dreaded going to the dentist.

For any of you who are interested, I am posting a link to the slide show I put together for the Holy Rosary Academy 130th event. both links are for the same slide show. The first link is a windows media viewer (.wmv) file and the second link is for an .MP4 file. You can click on the "download' icon in the upper left corner of the link or you can play the file by clicking it. Enjoy.
