Does anyone remember, or better yet have a photo? When I was a kid in Woodland, all the christmas trees were collected, and put in a huge pile at the fairgrounds, and then lit on fire? I can vaguely see this huge bonfire, if I close my eyes and "go back in time :-) ".

Just be aware that Cache Creek has historically caused flooding within Yolo County.  Excessive rains have increased floodings along the farmland levees.  1958 was one such event to note.  I so remember firsthand.

Greg: Our ranch connected with the fairgrounds and I do remember the huge bonfire with Christmas trees. I believe it was held in the arena. I am sorry to say I don't have any photos of them though.  You brought back another memory!

The county archives likely would have a picture of the Christmas tree burning, if someone wants to go to that trouble.

I don't know if this is still done, but Cache Creek use to be breached and the water would flood the bypass clear down south of Davis.  That is why I-5 to the river is raised and also the freeway to Sacto east of Davis.

Thanks Gary, Good idea I'll check and see if Yolo county Archives has a pic

Hi Linda, I don't think it is a "breach", but, Cache creek empties into the bypass at a place called "Sink of the creek" when there is enough of a flow in the creek. This was just a little bit north of the River Road, just to the East of Poleline road. & BTW, that used to be a spot that some of the best asparagus and carrots used to be raised

Here is an interesting link for water levels in Cache Creek at Yolo.  That is where water over topped the levee in ~1995, I believe it is called Huff's bend.  Anyway, the link takes you to a NOAA website showing what the real time water elevation is in the creek, what the different levels mean from initial monitor, to danger...

I have  had alot of calls from friends on the east coast, wondering if we have been washed out to sea yet.  Apparently that is how it is being described in the papers there.  I give them the website and they don't have to worry about us (or know when to worry).

We have been lucky to have some weeks of no rain or storms.  But, be prepared, keep watching.  When the snow melts we may have some issues.  We still do not have enough reservoirs to store clean water, and distribute, before it moves out to sea.  Again, not all levees have  been repaired or constructed continually.  Seems these repairs and new reservoirs for excess water is not a top priority in the works of government.  Until there is a disaster which we have seen, will things be changed to resolve our water issues. Just be prepared.  Our cities have water issues on roads also in heavy rains. .

I attended Coach Earl Lowart's memorial last Thursday.  It was  great  to see his family,  many teachers and former students  he coached.  Coach Lowart was at Woodland High for 36 years and coached many sports.  His favorite was tennis which he coached for 28 years.  I was fortunate to be on his first team in 1961.  I went on to play, teach and coach tennis for many years.  His teaching technique and principals left a lasting impression onn me.

Orv, I'm sorry I miss you there. He was a wonderful person and it showed at the service. There were 150 people at the service. He touched so many lives.

I am so sorry I missed the notice of the passing of Earl Lowart.  In the 1960s, I babysat for his children and enjoyed doing that job.  His wife kept the most clean and neat home, amazing.  My condolences to all his family, and to Ramona Wallace, a good friend to Earl for many years.     I spoke with Earl at Mr. Hal Brown's memorial; glad I was able to talk about his lovely family with him.

I'm checking for info re the Decade Reunion. Is there a date yet?   Some far away folks are needing info to be able to start making arrangements

It would be nice to know as far in advance as possible.  My wife has never been to California and we have spoken about going at some point.  Maybe that would be the time.  I have only been to one reunion which was at Heidrick Ag Museum.  I can't remember which one that was.  I haven't been to Woodland since 2009 when I was living in Sacramento.  It would be nice to see the old town again.  It just keeps growing and growing.  There were 13k people when we moved to Woodland to take care of my great grandmother who originally moved there from Iowa in a covered wagon.

I will keep an eye out for an announcement.

Thanks for the reminder Pam :)

To all ya-all:  Regarding a third all-60's reunion event, I talked to the ole exec committee members, Debbie Bruno and Joan Lucchesi and we agreed it is time to set a meeting to discuss different options and hopefully figure out who all could take on the planning.

We chose Wednesday, April 5th, 4pm at Belle Via Realty, 220 Cleveland St for a preliminary meeting.  Hopefully coming out of the meeting, we will have a volunteer to chair an event.  (FYI, we have a survey tool on this site.  I am happy to initiate a survey if anyone has any burning questions to ask before the Apr 5th meeting.)

I am under-whelmed with the lack of comments on a possible all 60's reunion in 2023.  I don't what to mis-read the silence on the issue, but feel free to register comments here or to your class reps.  I am starting a page for a possible 2023 all 60's reunion, and posting the class rep list there.  And I will get a very short survey sent out shortly.

Thanlk you for the post re a 1960s reunion. I will be able to attend if I have not yet moved. As much as I would love to help on a committee, i cannot due to family health issues. I look forward to reading more posts and hopefully a 1960s reunion can happen.

Thank you

Gary, I am happy to hear of another reunion. Would be interested in learning more about it. Would be happy to participate this time.

Gary ~Thank you for starting the process of a '23 60's class reunion.  My husband, Tom Wilson, and I would like to come and see everyone who graduated in the 60's!  Again, thank you, and I look forward to hearing more.

Frances Handley (Jones) (1964)

Gary & committee members: Thank you all in advance for the wonderful job you all always do . Those of us who don't live close always live having a great reason to come back & visit. These last five years have been rather tumultuous for everyone so I am sure we will all love to participate and see everyone .
I think that the reunion and the picnic on Sunday worked out great ; but would like to see a meet  & greet venue activity on Friday night too. As out-of-towners we wish we could be there to help but that doesn't work out. Do count on us for support anyway we can! Looking forward to seeing everyone again !

Janet Long (Levers) (1966)

Question: Are there any funds left from the two previous events? Some may think it's heretical, or pooh-pooh the thought, but maybe it's time to hire a local party-planner who could do detail work like the contact lists, venue possibilities/costs, caterer or vendor arrangements, set-up, etc. in coordination with the few folks who have already done these tasks (at least) twice and would prefer to just enjoy the gathering. I'm as old and tired as the rest of you, and not willing to step up, 'cause I know how much work it is. But that's okay! WE COULD PAY SOMEONE TO TAKE CARE OF IT !?! (but an afterthought: since it's possible to do A LOT of preplanning online, an enthusiastic person who's stayed in the wings before, but enjoyed these events, could certainly take on some of the planning remotely). Just a thought...

Gary - I second Fran's comment. Definitely will do my best to attend. Living out of state makes it difficult to serve on a committee but will support anyway possible long distance!

Dear Folks,

The concept of a "60s" reunion is a great one!  Depending on the details I would love to make it back to Woodland if possible.  My wife is Irish and has only been to America once during the Covid lockdown here in Ireland.  That was a trip to South Carolina.  I look forward to hearing more about this possible event.
