Another "Memory Question". does anyone have any photos of these two popular "summer time swim" places:

Crowder Swiiming Pool in Madison, I can remember over the speakers hearing Ivory Joe Hunter, Elvis Presley and Fats Domino, or

CanonBall Swiming Hole, I can remember the rock was apinted red, I think?

06/20/23 05:38 PM #7456

Elvis Kelley (1962)

Hi Greg,  yes you are right. Cannonball was painted red. That was a good color for it because there were a few severe injuries there. I knew one personally that spent the rest of his life in a wheelchair. He did learn how to paint by holding the brush in his teeth. He actually did beautiful paintings. As far as Crowders go, I went there before Elvis hit big. If I could remember that far back, I probably heard Fats. It was a great pool, lots of fun.

Let's see if you can jar the old brain some more.

My memory of Crowders pool: The water was FREEZING.

Thanks Elvis & Joel - yes, I now remember how cold the water was :-)

Next Memory question: At the A&W, did the girls that brought the trays to your car window, ever do that on Roller Skates? or am I confusing reality with the movie American Graffiti ??

06/23/23 03:45 PM #7459

Elvis Kelley (1962)

Yes, they started with roller skates but stopped after a short time. I think it was because of the big potholes in the driveway. My 55 Ford was lowered to the point I bottomed out on some of them. Teenage engineering, maybe not so smart ???

Greg Kareofelas (1962)

Thanks Elvis and Craig, I was kind of hoping maybe someone had a photo of the A&W from that time period & yes I remember your 55 Ford, Do you still have a picture of it? I guess back in the "pre iPhone days" we had few pix of the common place stuff

I don't recall skates being used by the car hops at &W unless it was before my driving days which would have been prior to 1960.  My girlfriend worked therer in 1962-63, no skates then.

Hi Don, Yes I remember the girls roller skating to my car at A&W.
At least one summer in my time. Great cold root beer drinks after play soft ball.
What good times!

Joan Richter (Lucchesi) (1960)

Your right Linda, they did use roller skates in the early days. I just called my friend who was a car hop there and she was there in 1958 and 1959.

The A&W was so fun.  I just remember going there after swimming lessons on our bikes.  Having those wonderful mugs of ice cold rootbeer, and the baby mugs. We had a few of those mugs around the house for awhile. I remember the ladies serving in the cute uniforms, not the skates.  A great memory.  It was always crowded. Simple way of life.

Thanx Joan. I knew it had to be prior to 1960 when I started driving. I patronized A&W thru the 60s and there were no skates.  My girlfriend, Pat Phipps, worked there in 1962-63 as a car hop and her mother, Rena, was the daytime cook. I believe Eddie Dixon also worked there. Their  uniforms at that time was black shorts and a white blouse. So much for cute uniforms.

In the 1950s, I recall orange and black outfits for the servers.  They may have changed later, to just black and white.  .

Thanks Joan, I do recall one girl on skates that was so good. Could have been in competition skating she was that good.
Here in Michigan they use to have roller derby. Not sure if we had that in CA. I do miss A&W drive throughs.

Oh Craig thanks for the reminder. I would watch them on TV and really not think those talents were right there in Hayward. They were so entertainingly fast.
I was more watching the 49ers in person than all the other sports.
What great times I went to Redwood City field practice and shook the hand of Mr. Young. They were good to the fans.

I remember cruising between A&W and Foster's Freeze on Friday and Saturday nights during our senior year. Definitely remember the car hops.

I didn't have a car before my senior year so I had to ride my bike before then

Cruising was a great past time and Woodland was compact enough to make it easy to travel.
Growing up, alot of us rode our bikes. I remember in elementary having safety day with our bikes.
At one point roller skating was big. We walked miles to and from school and thought it easy to do.
Now driving across country is the way we move around. In the winter people travel to Florida, Texas, or Arizona with little thought of distance.

Cruising Main Street in woodland was fun. And with 2 lanes in both directions it was a lot better than social media. But if you didn't go to Sac and cruise K Street and participate in a Chinese fire drill,  you missed out of a lot of excitement. If we could only go back for just one night.

Thanks all for the memories, but, did anyone ever take a photo of any part of the A&W or the "Cruise" in general. I guess we did not have cameras? I know I got my first camera when I was overseas in Feb 1968, so the only pix I have of anything that happened before that are copies of pix my dad took of birthday parties, fishing or hunting trips.

Cruising never seemed to get old on a warm summer night.  Everyone would be asking "where's the party?"  There had to be a party somewhere.....Nelson's grove, second beach in the river, Cache creek, someone's house....it was an awesome time.  I bought my first new car in 1968 from the Pontiac garage near the State Theater.  I ordered it the way I wanted and had to wait for it to arrive which seemed like a lifetime.  It was a 1969 Pontiac Firebird with a tach on the hood and walnut trim interior.

Like all good Woodlanders we also cruised Sacramento, up and down J and K.  The theaters in Sacramento were fantastic.  The Fox, the Esquire, the Alhambra, the Tower, the Crest.....ornate formal entry halls and very stylish.  There were drive in theaters all over Sacramento, one in Woodland (Sunset), and one in Davis.  Good times.
