Tom. Thanks for the pictures. Brings back fond memories.

The pictures of the Sacramento theaters reminded me of the time, I cut school and went to see a movie in downtown Sacramento. I can't remember who i cut school with. I got caught and had to spend a few days in detention!!

Tom Stewart, loved your photos of the old theaters, etc., especially the Alhambra.  That was a majestic old place, and I was sad when they were unable to mount enough of a campaign to save it in the 70's.

Tom the Porter theater was in Woodland on College right.

Thanks for posting the pix Tom. Did you take them, or were you able to find them someplace?

Greg Kareofelas (1962)

Hi Anna, Yes, I think the Porter Theatre was on College, about a half block north of Main. I think it was owned by Bobby Garette's dad, who also owned the Sunset Drive-in

Loved the pics you posted Tom!!  Going to downtown Sac theatres were a big deal when I was young.  We actually dressed up to go.  I remember the gold ropes and stantions and the young men in jackets that made them all look like Bell Captions.  Recently in Denver and took a pic of an old theatre (The Mayan) that reminded me of the Alhambra, which I always thought was magnificent!!

Thank you Tom Stewart for the memories!  While crusing Main St with friends, at every red light, we'd do a "Chinese Fire Drill", jumping out of the car, running around it, then jumping back in before the light turned green, laughing the whole time...Also, the Alhambra in Sacrcramento, in 1966, a group of friends and I went  to see The Great Race with Tony Curtis, Natalie Wood, Jack Lemmon,  and Peter Falk.  Such a funny slapstick movie. Perfect for goofy teenagers. (and a great movie to watch, even today!)  Oh, also, the Porter Theater, went to see The Blob (with Steve McQueen) and other sci-fi movies there.  Scary stuff! Great memories, Thank you!

Greg, I think the Garrettes owned the Yolo Theater and Sunset.  Porter and State theaters own by same people, the Skellshocks maybe.

Hi Don

Yes, I think that's right about the Yolo Theatre, Thanks!!

Does any one remember driving to the Sunset Drive-in, East street South and going under the "Over-Head RR Crossing" sign tht was red Neon? I wonder what ever happened to that light :-)

Doyle Phillips (1961)

George Mann and Morgan Walsh built the Porter and opened in 1936. They also owned the State.

Greg, I do remember that but it wasn't East Street then it was 99W, I believe.

East St. was 99E.  Co.Road 98 at Browns Corner was 99W.  99W went all the way to Redding. 99E went to Yuba City. Later changed to Hwy. 113.  At least that thats the way it was when I patroled the area in the 70s.

Was there not a fire that destroyed or heavily damaged the Porter?  I do remember going to the movies there in the late 50's/early 60's.

Theresa Eve (1964)

Tom Stewart, love your Woodland History Pictures, and some of Sacramento.  Yes, JoAnn the Porter Theater was on College Street and played, "Gone with the Wind" my favorite movie.  I have a few pictures I have taken over the year.  The pictures in the Post Office, some I love of the country.  Ended with the Hershey Sisters (A picture from the historical society.) .

Great photos, Teresa.  That old home looks so very lovely all cleaned up.  Fun to see a photo of the Hershey Sisters....heard of them for years.

I just signed my husband and I up for the reunion on September 9.  The process was easy and no problems.  Just wanted to share that signing up on-line is an easy process.

Another "Do you have a picture of?" memory time. When we were in school, there were a number of "Classic" Auto Wrecking Yards in Woodland, I can remember Race Track Rd Wrecker & Warford's Yards, I can remember I think two others, but not their names. This was before "U-Pull-its", you went to the counter and asked about a part, the worker would go out to the yard and get it, and charge what he thought you were willing to pay :-)

Anyone have a photo of any of those places?
