Craig -

Yes. My Slipped Disc showed up clearly on the x-ray. Poked right out. That savvy physical therapist got me doing those stretching exercises that worked it back in. Quite painful but not Herniated.

Today we go back to the 1956 Yolo County Fair with the "Sugar Queen" and attendants (Un-named, anyone know their names?)

I do not know how the Yolo Co Fair calendar plays in this.  But I hope this is a start.  Also could not find names for the "Court".

2024

There is a philosopher named Francis Schaeffer from Switzerland who wrote a book entitled, “How Shall We Then Live”. He makes the proposition that our coinage, music, entertainment, and art reflect the heart and nature of a society. He illustrates this going back to ancient civilizations and demonstrates the decline of nations as these categories devolve.

As I have stated previously, my great-grandmother moved with her parents to Woodland when she was a young girl. They came by covered wagon and farmed land out past the Yolo County Fairgrounds. They came in a covered wagon from Iowa. During her lifetime she traveled by covered wagon and horse, and yet saw men put manned spaceships into orbit. That’s a lot in a lifetime, but what do we see when we compare our lifetimes for approximately 1964-2024? Of course, our lives didn’t actually begin in 1964, we were all 12-22 then, but you get the general point.

The news was reported at that time, not fabricated and created. We had no microwave ovens, bottled drinking water, mobile phones, DVDs/CDs, Video games, Bluetooth, computers, AI, etc. Government had a much smaller role in our lives and we had a greater amount of freedom. We lived in a culture founded on the ‘traditional nuclear family’, and our lifestyle was more like ‘Happy Days’ with cruising, drive-in theaters, dances, skating, regional vacations, home-cooked meals around a dinner table, and so on. You remember, I don’t need to tell you. The point is, look how far we have come? Are we better off? Is the world a better and safer place now with all the changes? That is for each of us to decide.

But similar to my great-grandmother’s life, we are seeing an almost daily change in the world, the laws, the culture, the morals, the ethics and the standards of society. It hits us every day. Some of us don’t really care and just want to enjoy our surroundings to the best of our ability, and others are greatly affected by the rapid change. Either way, we are staring down the barrel of 2024 and none of us can even guess what will happen in the next year. One thing that is certain is that between January and December, there will be monumental changes. Get ready, get set…..Go!

good story Tom. Some of my ancestors traveled the Oregon Trail in a train of covered wagons. Fun family stories.    This morning we watched the Rose Parade.  So, of course remembering marching in it back on Jan 1,1968 plus all the work we did to get us there. So much community support. I have a big photo of the Band marching up Pasadena Blvd.

Here's a fun advert from the back of our 1962 Ilex (some of the ads have great photos like this one :-) ) Here we have Mary Eve trying to sell Bill Carlson (or vice a versa :-) ) a stove at Larry' Appliances!!

On another note, does anyone know where Danya Maier is now, (Class of 1961) She used to live out by Elkhorn I think? My uncle John knew her brother

Greg:  Thank you for the Larry's Appliance Advertisement pictured in the Woodlan High Scool Ilex. Those advertisements have good picturs of our classmates.  I remember the dress Mary was wearing.  It was blue,  too low waisted to be passed down to me.  Sad, as I loved it.  1964 Ilex has a great group of classmates pictured in the Leithold's Drug Store ad.  Didn't Leithold's later remodel the old fountain and remove half the bar area,   .

Now children, don't be ill-willies. Maybe you are a bit bumfuzzled from spouting taradiddles. If you must use billingsgate, please give us a gardyloo so we may pirouette before we go all cattywumpus.

(With a nod to today's Merriam-Websters newsletter.) P.S.: I spelled pirouette correctly on the first try.laugh

Most liberals on the site are gone? Most people here are conservative? Most people here are TRUMPERS?  Where did the liberals go? Did the TRUMPERS eat them? No Craig, most people here want nothing to do with politics when they come to this forum.

You are a dominant voice on this forum (37 of the last 100 comments are yours.) That's fine when you join in the fun and share thoughts on good old Woodland and all that nostalgia. But I'm afraid all the politics and argumentitive talk might drive people off the site.

Okay? Asking as a friend.

And that goes for you too Tom. I appreciate thoughts and comments from you and Craig when they are not political.

HAPPY NEW YEAR. GO FORTY-NINERS.

Keep posting Craig, you're the only reason I stop by here. Talking about a wannabe dictator isn't being political, it's Patriotic. If you're on other sites I'd like to follow.

The expat from Ireland needs to listen to what his neighbors the Scots think about tfg.

The Irish constitution also gives rights to the citizens but with one major difference. There is a clause that allows the government to set aside those rights, or negate those rights under certain circumstances, which of course are determined by the government. We saw this during the Covid years. We were locked down for two years. We weren't allowed to go more than 5 kilometers (3 miles) from our homes, have visitors to our homes, attend funerals or weddings, attend church, etc. The Garda had checkpoints at many of the key roundabouts and asked where you were going, where you lived, and why you were going there. I lived about three miles from town and I was stopped at a checkpoint almost every time I went to town which was several times a week. ALL entertainment was closed, shoe shops and clothing stores were closed, hairdressers/barbers were closed, restaurants were closed then you had to have a passport to eat inside, masks were mandatory, social distancing was required, doctors' offices were closed except for emergencies (however the vet clinics and pet food stores were open). The Garda were just like the Gestapo, checking documents and enforcing illegal mandates.

We went to South Carolina during part of this time because the schools were all closed and the girls were going crazy. Every state in America had its own personality related to Covid. Washington DC and Northern Virginia were VERY fearful and paranoid, but South Carolina was pretty free and open. Covid revealed the heart of cultures and governments with various reactions and agendas.

I pop in from time to time to see the posts and along with many others I enjoy the nostalgia of people's thoughts and memories. I worked a few seasons at Spreckles Sugar in the sanitation department hosing floors, emptying garbage cans, driving forklift and other duties. I also worked for Kentucky Market and Safeway as a clerk. My first jobs were with the Daily Democrat and the Sacramento Bee. Woodland is a far different town than the one of my memories. The boundaries of the town were basically Gibson Road, East Street, Cottonwood, and Kentucky Avenue. Many of the people in this group graduated in the early 60s and knew a town different from the one I knew. I only see a few people from the late 60s posting. Not sure the reason for that, but it is a fact.

Tom Stewart--just to say--I found your description of life in Ireland during covid time quite interesting.  We in California certainly did not have life at that level.

Craig, your eye probably hurt from all those years of reading case law. I recommend Refresh Optiva Lubricant eyedrops. I use them every day on my 75 year old eyeballs.

Psychedelic Joel. That's Cool. Heavy. Far out. That's why I know "where it's at."

Well, stay groovy.

...and to the rest of the gang....
I apologize for posting things 'religious' in nature. I have served in some type of Christian ministry for over 50 years. That included being a teacher, missionary, youth director, pastor, and other roles. I guess when it is your life and vocation it comes out in most of the things you say and do. I will endeavor to avoid anything in that realm of understanding, and I will likely pull back on posting comments. Since I don't live in Woodland and haven't kept up on things since 1999 when I moved to Sacramento, then later to Texas I am not 'in the know'.

I only know a few people who post in this group and they rarely chime in. It seems most of you know each other from school and share mutual friendships.  Possibly the ten-year time span is too much. When you think about what the world was like in 1969 when I graduated, and in 1960 when others graduated, it is two different worlds.

Most of those who graduated in the early to mid-60s were never part of the drug culture of the late 60s and early 70s. I was a drug-using (not addicted) hippie during my early college days and ALL of my friends and associates at the time were the same. My life took a complete turnaround in 1972. From about 1966-69 I was a 'happy days' high school student focused on cruising, movies, concerts, dances, dating, and parties. One strange thing is that I NEVER could drink beer. It wasn't just that I didn't like beer, I couldn't swallow it, so I often drank wine or an occasional mixed drink. Those years were the years of 'keggers' and beer bashes at the river, Cache Creek, or the grove.

In the early days of drugs if someone brought marijuana to a beer party he or she would likely be run off. It wasn't a cool thing to do, but eventually it became normal and accepted. I remember one day when my son was a very young I was cutting a baby aspirin in half very carefully and I thought back about all the pills and drugs I used to take with no thought for safety. Times change and people change.

Hope all of you are doing well as we move into the next adventure of life.
