I would also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved in putting together our 50th reunion!!  Great job and what a wonderful evening!!  The venue was perfect.  I think I had the opportunity to visit with more classmates than at any other reunion...Again, thank you so much committee!!

JoAnn Kergel (Wirth) (1965)

Our thanks to all that put together a great reunion Sat.  Glad I got to visit with more of you.  Dan enjoyed his time and chats with several.  The evening flew by as it did last year.  See some of you at the '65 reunion next Sept.  Can you believe three reunions in a row?  Again a big thank you to all!

Norm Hoffmann (1964)

Yes thanks to all who put the reunion together. I thought it was great, good food and a great time. For me it was a mind bending experience to see everyone and renew old friendships. I did not get around to talk to everyone as I wanted to, but I hope to keep up with all of you through the forum or through email. Thanks Smoky and the team. The memory board was great. Keep up the great work and best to you all.

I, too, wanted to add my thanks and appreciation to Smokey and his committee members.  It was a wonderful evening and so much fun visiting with everyone.  It seems impossible that 50 years has gone by, but it has.  My Dad really enjoyed himself and loved visiting with all of you.   Hope to see you at the next gathering.  Susan

Susan,

Thank you for bringing your Dad to our 50th reunion.  I enjoyed speaking with him after dinner.  I told him I've always remembered my sophomore year as my best football playing season, all because Coach Meyer and his assistant, Coach Stone, got us into such great shape that every game was a blast, right up to the final moments of the 4th quarter.  We were so well conditioned by our coaches that we couldn't help but have great games.

Yes, a personal thank you to all the teachers from Woodland High School who so graciously attended our 50 Class Reunion for the Class of 1964.  It was an honor to have you there to join in on the celebration.  Loved speaking with you and remembering the times shared.  You were our support in so many ways.  Thank you kindly for coming.

Eldon Larson (1964)

Just a few comments on the 1964 50th class reunion.  Thanks to Smokey for running a tight ship and controlling his committee:  Jack & Judy Nusz Andrade, Sharon Redmond, Teresa Eve, Art Fortis, Dan Kindelt, Eldon & Shelly Hawk Larson, Mahala O’Brien, Anita Tafoya, Smokey Rico, and Joyce Wunder Tauzer.  We had a great time planning the event and even more fun after the meeting.  We took care of business and then just enjoyed visiting with each other.

As mentioned at the reunion, we would like to keep in touch by having a picnic or some type of event each summer.  We can plan the next big reunion for 2019.  I for one had a great time talking with everyone and look forward to smaller events in the summers that will be easier to setup.  Some of us are getting old.

In order to have better communication between classmates if everyone could update their profile on the 60s website:  www.whs60s.org    You could also send me updated address, phone numbers or email address and I will see that it gets updated.  My email:   eldon-larson@juno.com

Thanks to all of you who attended the reunion.  Thanks to those that wanted to but other commitments or illness prevented them from attending.     Go Wolves,   Class of 64 Forever

Nice to hear from Eldon on all the great words for our 50th Class Reunion.  It was a lovely time. And I do hope that the future classes have as much fun.  Marilee is on the road for a great time and I do know it takes a lot of work.  Do hope everyone is enjoying this Fall, as it is upon us.  Just because we had a Reunion, we can still keep the Forum going with good input.  Let's hear how everyone is doing upon their return home.  I just did a bike ride today, lovely weather.  Went to Apple Hill and it was lovely.  The firemen were putting away all the equipment, as we watched. Good job they saved so many homes.  The Christmas Tree farms were all ready for this December, glad they did not burn.  Go up and have some wine and get a Christmas tree early, or some apples.  I am ready for apple pie!  Have my apples and I have pumpkins out on my steps!!!  Fall is Here!!!  Did you get your heaters checked for this winter.  Now is the time.   Enjoy!

Judy Nusz (Andrade) (1964)

Jack and I also enjoyed our 50th reunion so very much.  We all had  story.  Nice to feel connected again.  Wanted to mention that the 2/ Woody black n white stencils were made by my granddaughter, Selina.  They were made out of old LP's.  If you are interested in buying one, you could pay $40 reunion rate. Took her 8 hrs to make.  Let me know.  530 666 1009.

Check out the swentowsky photography site for the 1964 reunion pictures that will be in the memory book.  You'll see the stencils on the check in table. (oh yeah, by the way, she  brought the LP stencils to me in an Ike and Tina jacket, ouch!)

i wonder if anyone can explain woodland high school's current athletic department.

why are the teams so lackluster?  i was a member of the high school varsity basketball team.

we did reasonably well playing inter-city sacramento and regional schools.

i'd appreciate your thoughts.  thank you.

10/10/14 07:46 PM #1526

Don Murdoch (1962)

Dan,   The explanation is easy.  There are three high schools in Woodland.    WHS, Pioneer HS and Woodland Christian. All the athletes are split between those 3 schools.  How else can you explain Woodland HS losing in football to Dixon and Winters?   Losing to Esparto is probably next.  Woodland sports is very sad now. However, they still stay somewhat competitive is baseball.

10/11/14 09:30 AM #1527

Tim Tucker (1965)

Don, the population of Woodland is now nearing 60,000,  I believe the population was around 20,000 back when we were in high school. (early to mid 60's ) Therefore the talent pool should be optimum. 3 high schools 3 X as many people. So I'm thinking there's got to be a different reason. Does anyone else have an idea ?

Elaine Shoup (Blankenship) (1969)

DON AND DAN I HAVE NEVER ANSWERED ANYTHING ON THIS SITE BUT WHEN I READ YOU IDEAS ABOUT WOODLAND;S HIGH SPORTS I HAD TO TELL YOU WHAT HAPPEN TO ME.

MY GRANDDAUGHTER HAD PLAYED VOLLEYBALL IN THE 6 7 8 9TH GRADES SO THE FIRST WEEK OF HER 10TH GRADE LAST YEAR WE WHEREN'T TO CONCERNED ABOUT IT. SHE CALLED ME CRYING TO COME PICK HER UP. I PULLED UP IN FRONT OF PIONEER HIGH. SHE IS SITTING ON THE CRUB CRYING.SHE TOLD ME SHE DID NOT GET CHOOSEN. BECAUSE HER WEIGHT HAD ALWAYS BEEN A CONCERN I WENT IN TO ASK THE COUCH IF THERE WAS ANOTHER SPORT SHE SHOULD TRY OUT FOR. OF COURSE SHE DIDN'T WANT ME TO GO IN .BUT THINKING THIS WAS GOING TO BE A ADULT MCONFRSATION WHAT COULD GO WRONG RIGHT. I WALKED IN AND WENT TO THE ONLY MAN IN THE GYM I TOLD HIM WHO I WAS AND ASKED ABOUT IDEAS AS TO WHAT WE COULD DO. HE CALLED OVER A WOMAN WHO TOLD ME MY GRANDDAUGHTER WAS NOT GOOD ENOUGH.I SAID I GOT THAT WHAT OTHER SPORT TO YOU THINK WE CAN ENCOURAGE.IT ENDED UP WITH ME WALKING OUT WHILE IN FRONT OF ABOUT 30-40 HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS SHE WAS SCREAMING GET THE F---K OUT YOU B---H I TURNED AROUND TO GO BACK AND I SAW ALL THE GIRLS STOPPED AND WAS WATCHING THE COUCH. SO I WENT ON OUT WITH HER SCREAMING THE SAME FOUL WORDS AT ME. MY DAUGHTER EMAIL THE PRINCLPE TOLD HIM WHAT HAPPEN HE FORWARD HER EMAIL TO THE MAN IN CHARGE OF SPORTS. AS OF NOW ONE AND A HALF YEAR LATER SHE IS STILL THERE. I HOPE THIS GIVES YOU A IDEA OF WHAT OUR GRANDKIDS ARE UP AGAINST AT PIONEER HIGH                   ELAINE CLASS OF 69

Don Murdoch (1962)

Elaine,

I am very sorry for what happened to your grand-daughter.  That should never have happened. I played sports in high school and college and have never witnessed such a display by a coach so I don't know how to respond.  I had very professional coaches in high school such as Warren Meyer, Earle Lowart, Palmer Muhl and Elmer Pfaffenberger, just to name a few.  Coaches such as the one you described, do not belong coaching high school sports, or any sport for that matter. They shouldn't even be teaching, period.  I am assuming from your post that your grand-daughter is still in high school.  The correct action to take, and it's not too late, is to contact an attorney and file a written complaint to the Yolo County Superintendant of Schools. Some attorneys may take your case pro-bono, i.e., no cost to you. They MUST conduct an investigation into this matter. You read in the paper all the time about hazing in high school sports and the mistreatment of high school athletes, male or female, by the coaches and other student athletes. There were apparently numerous witnesses to this incident, right. If this incident, and similar incidents, are invesigated, I'm sure that appropriate disciplinary action will be taken against the teacher/coach.  After my law enforcement career, I was a private investigator and in that capacity I investigated numerous allegations against teachers, mostly in Sacramento.  Some were valid and some were not.  It usually hinged on the number of and the believeability of the witnesses.  If there are any attorneys reading this, please respond.  I wish you the best in clearing this matter and feel free to contact me.  Good luck.

Could not help but read the comments about the young girl and her situation with sports. I also can see where mom was a bit agitated and probably should be.I would be a bit upset, and would try to find out what can my daughter participate in to allow her to still do sports. I can say honestly when i came to WHS and was in gym the first week , one of the teachers (who should have been retired already , she really had zero patience with young students, and i think personally she was tired of teaching) , came up to me saw my name and said : "If you are anything like your aunt , i will flunk you." I was totally shocked, and thought wow who let this drill sargent loose on us. My aunt had been very sick, and could not do alot of the gym things period. I also had surgery after surgeries, and was up against the same thing. A couple of them were darned serious too!  She was hard on me, and everytime i came back from surgery with a doctors excuse, to not do strenous things, she got even madder at me. My freshman and sophmore year i hated  gym. When i was well i was active in G.A.A. for Volley ball, and i loved it, i played tennis, i swam, i did all kinds of sports, in school (when i could) and when out of school also. One week i finally just went home, and said i cannot take her rudeness anymore. My dad was not happy about it, but he understood. He addressed the issue, and it was sort of stiffled a bit,  and i got grounded (of course) for leaving campus. But the point was : that teacher should no have referred to me as being like my aunt, and if i was , it was not her place to talk like that in front of everyone else and embarass me in front of them. I mean going from 8th grade to the big school; i thinks scared many of us. It was something new, and very different. I agree the mother should probably file a complaint, and hope to follow it through, and maybe a lawyer will assist pro-bono. Weight should not come into play when the student loves sports and wants to participate. She wanted to be part of a team, and her mom  knew that  and went about seeing if there was something else sport wise the  young girl could do , The mom was  trying make her daughter not just feel better, but be a part of a team of a sport of some kind. I read the above discussion with a lot of interest.  I lived in San Francisco for many years and had a god-daughter who played school volleyball for many years.  During her 8th grade year, her team won the San Francisco Catholic League Championship.  My god-daughter was the leading server/scorer for her team and voted MVP of her team.  When she went to the 9th grade, she tried out for the high school volleyball team and could not make it.  Friends of her that had played on her championship team made the team and girls that had never played volleyball made the team.  Why didn't my god-daughter make the team?  My god-daughter approached her coach and asked her why she didn't make the team.  The coaches' reply, "Your older sister (10 years older) and I never liked each other.  It's just my way of getting revenge on your sister.  It doesn't matter what you do, you'll never make the team."  My god-daughter was devastated.  Of course, my god-daughter's older sister was ready to see the coach and punch her out.  My god-daughter never played another sport again in high school.  This happened in the early 80's and there wasn't alot that she could do.

These post just make me sick. Do coaches know what they are doing to these young people? Some will be scared forever. I'm sure that you are not thinking of law suit as you haven't done anything for a year and a half but I do think you should make an appointment with the principal, if only to make sure they are watching to make sure that this isn't still happening. I think I heard there is a new principal at Pioneer. If they talk to an adult that way, what are they saying to these young girls.  Keep us posted and know that there are people out there that don't agree with talking like that to ANYONE!

In 7th grade at Harriet Lee Senior Elementary, the gym teacher was Ray Guiterez. On the first day of class, he had us all lined up at attention like marines. He asked one kid, "What's your name?!" The kid answered, "Roy Rogers!" Everybody burst out laughing, so Mr. Guiterez kicked him out of school on the spot. I can't say how it was resolved, but needless to say, the kid, whose name really was Roy Rogers, was back in school the next day. I don't recall Roy going on to Woodland High School with us, but I'll never forget him.

Fellow classmates...........Having read the thread on the sports at Wodland  (Different) High Schools, I too am shocked at what happened..............I remember some of the coach's (Did I do that right?) of our time frame, some of them good, some not worth spit, but back to subject at hand.............That lady who was talked down too by use of profanity, should go to the City Schools Superintendent/Local School Board members and file a complaint against the teacher/coach who said what has been stated by the damaged party............Too many teachers live for only tenure and nothing else........You can make a difference, but it takes time..................As a local school board member here in Modesto, I listen and follow up on teachers like that one...............If all esle fails, by all means get a Lawyer and go after that person....All things are local, so use it locally.............

THANKS FOR ALL THE SUPPORT ABOUT MY GRANDDAUGHTER. I HAD FORGOTTEN A COUPLE COMMENTS THE COACH SAID.HER MOTHER REMINDED.THE COACH HAS SAID THE YEAR BEFORE SHE WOULDN'T MAKE IT BECAUSE SHE DID NOT LIKE MY GRANDDAUGHTER. WHEN I TOLD HER I WANTED TO KEEP MY GRANDDAUGHTER IN SPORTS TO HELP KEEP HER WEIGHT DOWN THW COACH SAID SHE WAS NOT RESPONAILITY TO MAKE SURE THE KIDS ARE ACTIVE AND FIT.TUNI GRAVINK HOUSE THE SAME THING HAPPEN TO MY GRANDDAUGHTER [YES THE SAME ONE] A PE TEACHER [ NOT THE SAME ONE] AFTER MY GRANDDAUGHTER TOLD HER PE TEACHER WHO HER AUNT WAS [ MY YOUNGEST DAUGHTER] THE TEACHER SAID SHE DIDN'T LIKE HER AUNT AND IF SHE WAS ANUTHING LIKE HER SHE WASN'T GOING TO LIKE HER EITHER, AND SHE DIDN'T WE HAD TO TAKE HER OUT OF THAT PE CLASS. BURKE FONG I GOT REALLY SAD READING ABOUR YOUR GOD DAUGHTER. I THINKJOAN RICHTER LUCCHESI SAYS DO COACHES KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING TO OUR KIDS. IT'S A SAME WE HAVE SO MANY WONDERFUL TEACHERS OUT THERE BUT THESE FEW ARE THE ROTTEN APPLES IN THE BUNCH [ MY NEICE BEING ONE OF THE GOOD ONES] I ALWAYS THOUGHT THE SCHOOLS AND ALL THEIR EMPLOYEES WOULD LOOK OUT FOR OUR KIDS WHILE THEY WHERE THERE. I FOUND OUT THE ONLY ONE WATCHING YOUR KIDS HAD BETTER BE YOU. THE GOOD TEACHERS ARE VERY GOOD BUT THE BAD ONES NEED TO GO. I FOR ONE THINK WE NEED TO GET RID OF TENARE [ NOT SURE IF THAT IS SPELLED RIGHT] THERE SHOULD BE NO JOB THAT IS GUARANTEED NO MATTER HOW BAD YOU ARE ELAINE CLASS OF 69
