The 1953 First Grade Class, teacher is Mrs. Winnop, that is Jack Winnop's mother.  Jack Winnop was in the Woodland High School Class of 1963.  Mrs. Winnop was a single Mother and raised Jack on her own.  Mrs. Winnop's Mother was Mrs. David, who lived in Chico, California.  My Mother, Mrs. Gwendolyn Eve, roomed at Mrs. David's home while attending Chico State to get her teaching creditals.  Mrs. David had a big farm house filled with antiques and a backyard which was like an orchard filled with many fruit frees, quite lovely to visit her home in Chico.  A wonderful memory.  Anne Douglas and the Douglas Family also knew Mrs. David.  Mrs. Douglas went to Chico State College also and sat next to my mother on graduation day, a small world.  Chico State was know as a teachers college in those days.  Anne and I just shared some pictures of our mothers from the Chico year book.

I haven' t  been in the message forum since I posted that primary school picture and was glad so many had memories.  We all have a "story" don't we.  This is what I loved most about the 50th reunion....we all have a "story'.  But we are able to come together and share our today lives and wonder how we all made it!  Good for us.  Thanks to my mother, I also have all these early school photos.  I love to watch my hair dos as it's plain to see when I took over doing my hair myself.  Ha ha.

Wonderful to hear from you, Judy. I am so appreciative of having the Meltons right next door where Viccis mom helped me with trying new dos. Vicci had a swiming pool and we spent many hours swimming and playing Monopoly. My folks showed a great work ethic and all three of us girls are selfemployed at some time in our lives.  Thanks to having great parents, friends and classmates.

As it is Fall and Thanksgiving on its way.  I have had some wild turkeys on my front yard.  They walk around as if they own the place.  I will post a picture of them.  Very interesting, but I had them move along, as they can do damage to the yard and flowers.  They flew over the fence and were on their way.

Speaking of Beamer School in the olden days, who can remember the teacher, Miss Carrie Conger?  Anne Douglas and I knew her since she visited our homes often.  Our parents were teachers so she would come over for visits, not having a family of her own.  She was quite a character telling stories of the children she taught and days of her youth.  I believe her home was North Dakota where she had one brother.   I am sure she made an impression on some of you while going to Beamer School.  Bless her heart.

I was wondering what year did she teach..."Miss Conger at Beamer?....Reason I ask is that I came to Beamer in 59, I think in the Spring of 59....Tlhanks

Thinking about on when Miss Conger taught, I know it was all through the 50s,  maybe earlier, and then on as a subsitute teacher.  She taught for years, and no one really knew her real age, as she kept that a big secret.  She was very much "Old School" in all ways. You had better mind, or she was after you.  She lived at various boarding homes in Woodland; Dad would drive over and pick her up for a Sunday visit.

Miss Conger. What a teacher. I had to ride my bike downtown to the drug store during class to buy her aspergum. She often told us stories about her family trading with buffalo bill. I remember a girl in our class had an accident and she went to the bathroom to clean up,well you know the boys got a giggle out of that. I got blind sided with a sucker slap that knocked me out of my desk. Say what you want about teaching methods and she probably would be suspended today ,but I still remember the midnight ride of Paul Revere because you learned in her class. She would teach more the the 3 rs she would teach life lessons I still remember. One day she passed out and fell out of her chair and scarred us to death. The girs ran down the hall yelling Miss Conger is dead.

Donald, you have her nailed!!  She always had gum in her mouth or something while she talked.  She always was taking cough syrup or something out of a bottle she kept in her purse.  Who knows what it really was.  She she taught about life in many ways!!!  When I looked up her name it said she was born 1888 and passed Oct. 1, 1971.  Not sure that is totally correct.  I am sure she was around with the Indians. What stories you told!!  Made me laugh.

Lanny-another great Pic-I still have this picture also-too bad I didn't put down the names-Tim and Robert have theirs' correct I beleive.  Here's a couple more-Left to right-Top Row #5 Steven Gillette (RIP)  #8 David Watts (he moved away around then-he my next door neighbor and one of the Beamer Park kids.  Middle Row #8-Was a twin-maybe Denise??  Just a guess but maybe Carl Natvig top row next to Marion.  The 3 girls before Marilyn may have been-and this is a total guess-Margret Messinger-then maybe a last name of Mejia-then a first name of Charlote -again those are stabs maybe someone can help on this.  Also Duane-I had Mrs. Conger in 6th grade-would have been 1958 or 1959.  I remember the horror storys about her before i was assigned to her class.  They were totally wrong.  If you behaved and did your work-she really cared about you.  One of the best teachers that I ever had.  Actually all of my Beamer teachers were great!

Correction on the Beamer picture guess of Carl Natvig-he was the one before David Watts-not Jim Marion-sorry about that.

I almost forgot-Robert-that is not Susan Ellis-I don't ever remember her being a northside girl.

I sure can remember faces but names aren't coming. Sorry Dave, but I;ll keep trying.

Kathy Dodds (Brehm) (1965)

Regarding the photo from Mrs. Morris' class, David is correct.  Margaret Messenger is the fifth girl from the left next to Vivian Graeser and I believe the first name of the girl next to Margaret Messenger is Esther but can't remember her last name.  Steve Gillett is the 5th boy from the left top row.  Wow, that photo brings back memories.  Thanks for posting it Lanny.

Cheryl Matter (Fowler) (1963)

I think the teacher in Lanny's photo is Mrs. King.......she was my 6th grade  teacher at Beamer (that was 1956-57)  I have my class photo and it sure looks like the same person.  If Lanny's photo was a 6th grade class it would have been taken two years later.

Joel Childers (1966)

Did anyone else go to the speech teacher at Beamer school, Mrs. Zeckmaster? I talked like a cross between Elmer Fudd, Porky Pig, and Sylvester until about 4th grade. Maybe Mel Blanc was our milkman.  Brian had Conger for a teacher and he said she was really mean. I was scared to death I would get her too. I didn't have her, but I remember Mrs. Railing and Mrs. Cushing for 5th and 6th grade. But it's all rather fuzzy.

Kathy Dodds (Brehm) (1965)

Robert - I am thinking that the Beamer photo is a second grade class as the teacher is Mrs. Morris' and I am pretty sure she was my second grade teacher. Could have been 3rd grade.  I know Mrs. Railing taught 5th. There was a Mrs. Cushing and a Mrs. Oliver but not sure which grades they taught.  I remember the Morris family owned and operated the Sanitary Dairy.

John Michael Somero (1967)

I attended Beamer School for the last part of my 5th grade when my parents moved to Woodland in 1960, and Dingle for the 6th grade.  Between one of those two schools, I remember a teacher (substitute?) by the name of Henrietta Toothaker, but don't remember much more about her other than the unique name. Anyone else have her for a teacher?

Lanny Robertson (1965)

I have no Idea of when the last photo I posted was taken had to be 1954 or 55 I think 54  , I have 2 more photos from Beamer dont know the years, that I will publish soon . That will be the extent of all photos from Woodland unfortunatly after my mothers passing while I was in Europe when I got back to the states and to her house all of the familly phots were looted by some one .

The memorys I have of growing up in Woodand first grade through 10th  are very precious to me .

This forum is also precious as I has brought many memorys back

Thanks all of you

The name of the Teacher could have been Mrs Morris and 2nd grade is what I think . That classroom was the first room on the riight as you came in the main door on the left was addministration and offices , I remember the old desks with the ink well holes and the tall windows with venition blinds and the hanging lights I could be all wrong in my reculections and wont feel bad if some one corrects me

I have to say it is things like these pictures of a lot of us as little guys and gals that make this site fun for me.  It speaks volumes for growing up in a smaller town when you can see that the kids you were in the 2nd grade with were still your classmates as senoirs in High School.  Robert-I totally agree with you-that is not Carl Natvig the more I looked at it-Maybe Loren ???-I just can't come up with his name-but I totally remember him otherwise.  Kathy D.-Esther Mejia maybe?  That is Mrs. Morris in Lany's picture.  Here is a list of my Beamer Teachers and the grade as best as I can recall.

Mrs. Winnop-1st

Mrs. Morris-2nd

Mrs. Cushing-3rd

Mrs. Oliver-4th

Mrs. Railing-5th

Mrs. Conger-6th

I'm not real sure about these-may have confused Mrs. Oliver and Mrs. Conger-Love to have some input here from my old Beamer Classmates.
