John, I remember Miss Toothaker ,she was our music teacher. She would go from class to class and give singing lessons to the whole class. I can still hear her pitch pipe.

David...............Would the name your looking for be Loren Polete?

Second...I think I had a Miss Cargo for my 5th grade year....Don't remember the 6th grade teacher

Kathy Dodds (Brehm) (1965)

David, I had Mrs. Oliver in 6th grade.  I am trying to remember where Mrs. Conger fits in.  I am thinking Mrs. Winnop, Mrs. Morris, Mrs. Conger 3rd, Mrs Cushing 4th, ( or could be Cushing 3rd and Conger 4th)  Mrs. Railing 5th, and Mrs. Oliver 6th.  The reason I remember Mrs. Oliver in 6th is because that is the year my grandmother passed away and I remember Mrs. Oliver telling me I had to leave class and go to my grandparents house.

Lanny, I am almost positive the photo is our class picture from 2nd grade.  I also remember the class room being in the same location as you described.  Can't wait to see the other class photos.

I went to Beamer school in the 6th grade (1962) teachers name was Mr. Bush. Did anyone go to Yolano School? It was behind Tafoya's Market on East St. (Yolano Village, labor camp area.)

Anne Douglass (Loud) (1964)

I got my falling apart held together by a ribbon scrapbook out again.

Robert Cowing:
You said regarding the class picture with Mrs. Morris:
BEAMER SCHOOL:
Teacher: Mrs. Morris
Grade: 2nd 1954 - 1955

My third grade report card said I had Mrs. Sue Dea Morris for the school year 1954-1955, so she could not have been teaching second grade the same year.

Sue Dea Morris was my neighbor in our duplex on Sunset Avenue across from Beamer School. I remember her singing scat (jazz) while working in the kitchen.

Robert, all I know is, the 6th grade was three of the best years of my life. It's where I learned if you tuck one part of your pants leg into your sock, people expect less from you.

Mike Miller (1966)

Mr. Berryman, 7th grade at Lee Elem. Meanest teacher ever. He would make you stand with your nose in a tiny circle on the chalk board with your hands behind your back. Dunce cap in corner. Got physical with some students. B set teacher was Mrs.  Whitmire. Can't remember what grade, maybe 2nd or 3rd.

Tim Tucker (1965)

Mike, are you sure about Mr. Berriman ???  The Mr.( Bill )  Berriman I knew, taught 6th grade at Beamer School and was probably the best teacher I ever had and many of my classmates would agree . I never saw him being mean.... ever. I noticed you spelled it Berryman so maybe you had a different teacher. There was a 7th grade math teacher at Lee, named Mr. Berland, I didn't have him as a teacher but I heard he was a little on the strict side.

Walter J. "Wally" Summ (1967)

To Tim and Joel,

You two definitely missed your callings.  You guys are number one Comedy Central material.

I saw Mr. Ray Berland not too many years back walking through the cemetery.  He told me:  "Wally, I'm walking through the cemetery to keep from ending up in the cemetery!" Then, he smiled.  Unfortunately, he ended up there anyhow about a year after I talked to him.  Yes, he was a little on the strict side...but he also had a "tongue in cheek" sense of humor that he would let escape every now and again.

I remember the Henrietta Toothaker name also.  However, I attended Dingle.  Our music teacher there was Ruth Cochran.  I remember her coffee cup with "Ruth" written  on it.  Above the name on the cup was a lip imprint with a very thick layer of fire engine red lipstick.  Also, she referred to everyone as "Toots".....

I had Mr. Teal as a block teacher in seventh grade at Lee, if my memory serves me correctly. He could get your attention, especially when he came behind you and lifted you out of your chair by your ears... Marian Franke for math, I think.

Duane-it was not Loren-but thanks for the try.  Loren was a friend  of mine all thru school.  He is the 2nd from the right-top row in Lanny's new picture.

Lanny-your new picture is much harder-lots of people I don't remember.

Don Hooker (1965)

Mr. Ray Berland had him for both 7th and 8th grade. He always walked around the classroom with a small piece of chalk in hand. Than when you would act out in class he would shake the living daylights out of you. Sometimes the piece of chalk he would chuck it across the room at you if not paying attention. The good ole days. He was a good teacher for me learned alot from him

About a Month Ago, I bought a pack of Historic Post Cards of Woodland on eBay. From the cars shown, I would guess the postcards date to late 1930's early 1940's. Yesterday I took some "Now" pix, to compare to "Then" pix of the postcards. The first thing that became obvious, is in the old days, there were not too many trees shielding the view of the buildings. I might go back later this year and see how many of the trees have lost their leaves and maybe reshoot some of the "Now" pix. Anyway, this is the Intro to the Post Cards:

Post Card Number 1 "The Elks Club" Then

The "Elks Club" Now

The building looks the same, Trees are planted out front, newer cars, and the flag pole has been moved

Post Card Number 2 The Post Office

The Post Office "Now"

The big difference here is the ramp for wheelchair access and the changed stairway going into the building. The flag pole looks the same. Signs, postboxes and street light are new

I'll work up the next batch of pix and post in a day or so.

Thank you Greg, so for all the pictures.  Wonderful looking back and in the present.  I remember as a little girl those great pictures on the post office walls of all the farm land and the farmers.  They are still just as grand.

Hi Theresa

Thanks for the suggestion! I did not have time to go in the Post Cffice Tuesday, next trip to Woodland, I'll go inside and take pix of the walls.

You may be right Tim. Mr. Borland.  Bad memories of him. Anyone remember Mr. Utley, 8th grade? Was it science?

11/20/14 12:28 PM #1679

Tuni Gravink (House) (1964)

Mr. Utley did teach science in 8th grade. I had him at Lee. Mr. Berriman was there also, for a while. Not long.

I love seeing the old photo's and comparing the newer ones to the same shot.   The print out of Woodland and the Yolo County is something else also.  I remember when they did the Spreckles thing. I of course; was pretty young. I remember going over to the big house next too it. That was the C. Nelson Hackett residence. Very nice man. I remember him, my dad and my daughter (who was quite little) riding the little train at the fair, and us talking. He was a very nice man, and a firend of my dads.

It was fun watching the planes fly over the Flyers Club. It was like they were going to land on you.

I went to Dingle School, then over to Gibson, then Lee, and the WHS. In Kindergarden (ha) we had our class in the basement of the high school, and the coat room, was in front of the girls gym.  I think first grade is when we did the transfer to Dingle.

We used to have two presidents pictures in the high school classrooms, and now they do not do that, and the Constitution and some of the other important documents this country has were also displayed. Now they are not , at least down here. I asked the youth of now, have you learned the preamble , and the blank stare i get. I know we have to move forward and accept changes in life, but those are important, and i wonder what they are learning other than: computers, iphones, and teckie stuff?  In 1994 our exchange student from Finland (senior year) had a test, and he was the only one that named all the capitols of each state, and the students from the US did not get many. That is pretty sad really. Tuni

Tim Tucker (1965)

Tuni, I have to disagree with you about Mr. Berriman teaching at Lee Sr. Elementary School. I had him at Beamer in the 6th grade. I know he wasn't at Lee when I was in the 7th and 8th grade. You were a year ahead of me so he couldn't have been there when you were in the 7th or 8th grade. Maybe he taught there after that, but I'm doubtful. Also, Mr. Utley only taught  7th grade science.

Ron Damsen (1966)

I had Mr. Utley at Lee Sr. Elementary. I remember he had us create a "Nature Walk" from the school through the empty field next to the school and in to the cemetery. We then acted as guides for our parents who came to school and went on the walk.

During class one day, when he was frustrated that we weren't remembering what we were reading, he made a deal that if we could answer one question, he would let us chew gum for one day. I think the question was, how far away is the closest star. After some wrong answers, I remembered the distance, as it was the caption under a picture in the text book. I gave the right answer and the class went crazy. I was a hero for that one day.

Greg and Theresa,

The painting in the Post Office of the farm scene showing a 1936 Caterpillar “Twenty Two” orchard tractor was commissioned as part of Franklin D. Roosevelt’s “Second New Deal”.  The “Second New Deal” consisted of the “Works Progress Administration”, “Social Security Act”, “National Labor Relations Act”, “Revenue Act of 1935”, and the “Housing Act of 1937”.

The Works Progress Administration (WPA) was created to return the unemployed to the work force after the depression.  The Post Office painting was done, I believe, as part of that program.  Around Woodland’s older sections, you will also find sidewalks that were done during that time period.  You will find a WPA stamp in the concrete.  Two examples that still exist (last time I looked) were at the corners of Elm St. and Bartlett Ave. and at McKinley and Bartlett Ave.  I’m sure that there are more examples around town.

Hi Wally

Thanks for the addl info!

That is also my memories of the Post Office Painting. I just haven't been in the Woodland Post Office for a long time. Next time to Woodland I'll try and get the inside pix taken. I did not know about the "sidewalk WPA" stamps, I'll check those out and get pix if I can find them!

Cheers, greg
