Tim,

You probably are correct about Mr. Berriman, but i think he was there later. I had Mr. Utley at Lee, and i hated the snails he was boiling, the room stunk beyound. However, his knowledge on birds was vrey impressive. You were a year behind me i believe. I know it was after Lee, that all of us merged over to WHS.  I can say Mrs. Lopez my moms friend, was teaching there later on after all of us had left Lee, and i may have heard his name mentioned through her, as she was having problems with kids smoking pot on grounds, and some sort of assistance he offered in getting the students to straighten up and fly right.  I can't even remember the lay out of Lee anymore. I remember the gym or assembly area, where cottillion lessons were held, but that is about it. I really did not like that school that much, i had been to Gibson and Dingle and those were fun schools for me. Henritta Toothacher (think that was her name), took over and subbed for Utley one time, I think it was her, and she told me that my mom was and excellent biology student. She told me my mom could really draw the human bodies organs, better than some of the pictures the books had. I told my mom about that and she brought out her old Biology book, and lab book (where the drawings were), and man, they were good! I used them throughout my school years after that for science classes. I even used it in my college class in the Bay Area.  Like i said i think it was Toothacher,  I just really remember the first name of Henrietta.  Lee had us doing things like that lunch box social, and stuff like that , and i really wanted no part of all that, but then i guess they were trying teach us how to grow up more and be ready for the next level of school, meaning high school.  Tuni

Tuni, I always figured if you're right 90% of the time, why quibble about the other 5%

great pix Greg!!! If you go back for more pix in the Post Office, I hope someone there will let you into the other one half of the lobby so you can get a pic of the mural that is now behind the wall.

Tom...   I think the name of the " wee little school" in southeast Woodland was called Springlake School. It was on E. Gibson road - (on the east side of Hwy 113).  It closed several years ago.  Pioneer High School is just a couple of blocks away off E. Gibson Road.

Greg..   Thank you for all the great "old" and "new" photos........I haven't lived in Woodland for over 25 years, and have forgotten about some of these places.  I'm not that far away and  still have family in Woodland, but don't get around town to see some of the places that were a routine part of my life for many years.

51 years ago tonight, I sat on the wing of a fighter jet that was on display at the park that was just around the corner from my house. I was a junior in high school. It was a very foggy night in Woodland. I have not forgotten, nor will I ever forget, the total shock, disbelief, and  strange feeling of emptiness, as I pondered that day's events.

Tim:  I remember that plane, it was next to the Armory on Beamer Street, near Clarks Field.  It did not stay there for very long.  Wonder about why it was there and why it was taken away.  I certainly remember it.  That was just a few minutes from 6 North McKinley, so the younger kids played on that plane.

Tim, it was a terrible afternoon/night that extended into the days to come.  I will never forget walking into Dozier's 4th period U.S. History and seeing him at his desk with his hands over his face.  It was at that moment I knew what I had hoped to be a false rumor was indeed true.

Greg, when you go into the Post Office, ask for MaryAnne Oliver; she's the postmistress, and would probably be willing to let you "in back" (she's married to a WHS grad; tell her where you're going to post it.

I must be getting old.....The Kennedy Killing in 63 never crossed my mind.....Usually the News media has a program on it or talks about it this time of year....................I was in Houston's class  (May have misspelled the name) anyway he taught US History also, man was  dud of a teacher, when it came over the intercom..........I felt sad, but was stunned it happened....I did enjoy getting out of school early, that way I had extra time for my girlfriend................Thinking about it later in life makes one wonder just what would been different in the USof A and maybe the world at large??????????

Hi Guys,

I found the pictures that I'd taken of the Post Office murals and the WPA sidewalk back in 2007.  The sidewalk above is at the corner of Bartlett Ave. and McKinley Ave.

The sidewalk 2007 photos below are at the northwest and southwest corners of Elm St. and Bartlett Ave.

Greg and Walter:  Thank you so much for the Post Office history and the pictures. The murales are so beautiful!  Looks like the Post Office has some of them covered by boxes; I would have them completely visible they are so beautiful and have such meaning.  I am sure all the children remember these big pictures even today.  Great work and so appreciated!!!  We have our own historical society within our Woodland Forum!!!  So fun.  Maybe someone will mention all these findings to the paper as we uncover all the details.

Judy Nusz (Andrade) (1964)

I do remember Mr Utley at Lee School.  Handsome as I remember (as a Lee Student could) and I remember his class was in a Quonset Hut.  WWII building.  I remember it being so hot in there that he would put a pie tin of water under the fan in the ceiling.  Why would I remember that? I believe my uncle bought a Quonset Hut and made it into a cabin......

Second row last little gal is my bestest friend Olga Duran who moved to Los Angeles/Pasadena about the 6th grade.  I moved there after graduation with her.  She now lives in Perris, California.  I try to visit often.  I do remember sometime while going to Freeman School I got sick and had to spend time at the hospital and all the kids from my class sent me homemade get well cards.

Judy, In your picture #2164 you mentioned your bestest friend Olga Duran. My brother had a good friend name Peter Duran who moved to the LA area.  Was that Olga brother?  I believe they lived on Freeman or North Walnut off Woodland Avenue.  That looks like Ernie on top row next to the teacher.   The last time I saw Peter Duran was in 1966 at the Yolo County Fairgrounds at a Pan American Dance or when Ralph Mathis was there.

Larry your brother?

11/24/14 02:34 PM #1704

Judy Nusz (Andrade) (1964)

Doyle, Larry Nusz was my cousin.  He has passed away for some years now; and yes Peter
Duran was Olga's brother a couple of years younger than me  He passed just this year.  He lived in Lake Havasu with his daughter but always lived in Pasadena/Los Angeles area. They lived on Freeman Street. Olga has had a slight stroke but is doing ok.  I always try to get her to come to Woodland.
And top row last fellow is my cousin Merl Nusz who battled weight unit he gradiuated fom Ontario Calif and is 6'3" and trim. Looks alot like Tom Cruz to me, only much taller. Retired from Cal Trans San Diego area.

Sharon Boatman (Little) asked that I post this notice regarding the Trans Siberian Orchestra - Christmas Attic, it will be presented here in Sacramento at the Sleep Train Arean - November 26th at 4:00 p.m and at 8:00 p.m.  Sharon said it is a great performance that is well worth your time and money, for a good holiday adventure.

Hi Janet

Thanks for the info on getting pix inside the post office. Even though, Wally just posted great pix of the murals, I want to get some taken myself. Seeing Wally's pix brought back many memories of seeing them when I was a kid!

cheers, greg

Hi Wally

Thanks for posting the Post Office Murals, just like I remembered them! There was something about them, that always seemed "bigger than life". Thanks also on the pix of WPA sidewalks. I wonder how many of those marks are still around. I always liked finding the WPA marks on rock walls, bridges, water fountains in the mtns, etc etc,  you would "just know" when you saw a WPA project,
