Vern , Shelly and family members, Eldon and all of you are in my prayers, and i pray for recovery and that he can be home with all of you for Christmas.  I remember sitting next to Shelly for a class photo, at our decades reunion, and hearing Eldon in back of us just happy and laughing, Tuni Gravink-House

Thank you all for your kind words and prayers on behalf of my little brother Eldon. The following is an update taken from an email from his daughter Lindsay.

Hello family and friends,

Dad is sitting up, talking, moving/lifting arms and legs and doing great after having a stroke yesterday morning.

From what I understand my dad got up about 7:30am to use the restroom and his arm felt a little numb. This isn't that uncommon for him since he has been using a sleep apnea mask to help him sleep and has been able to sleep longer periods of time in the same position. About an hour later his alarm went off and he was unable to control his right arm. He wasn't able to get up so my parents called 911. At the hospital he was given a drug called TPA (we think that's what it's called).  This drug is only given to stoke victims within the first four hours of the stroke. So far it has reversed effects of the stroke. He was affected on the right side of his body. Today he was able to eat with his right hand, move his right leg and some of the peripheral vision in his right eye has returned. What a great miracle! He is having a CT scan and MRI today to find out what other damage has occurred.

Scott and Kia are doing everything to help my parents. Scott stayed at the hospital last night so my mom could go home and get some sleep. Kia made delicious Chicken Noodle soup for all to enjoy. They are doing tons more too. We are grateful this occurred at home and not in another random state. We apologize this has taken a little while to get information to you. We will update you as we have information.

Please keep my parents in your prayers. The picture is of my dad this morning.

Lindsay

Eldon:  Great to see you are coming along!  With all those Woodland friends and your great family support, the prayers have certainly moved in the right direction.  May you regain good health and enjoy the Christmas Season.  That homemade chicken soup sounds so good!  All is a blessing.  My best to all.

Dear Eldon and Shelly and family and friends,

Your presence at the Reunion made the evening so enjoyable for me. The years just fell away with your friendly conversation and hard work to make the reunion the success that it was.

I am terribly sorry to hear of your medical drama--but the quick action of EMTs and ER may have been just the miracle that was needed at the right time,

You know my prayers and thoughts are winging their way to you from Ann Arbor!

Fondly,

Harriet (Shamshoian) Giles

Looking good Eldon.  I know you will be good as new in a short time.  However, two trips to the hospital in one year is a little too much for me.  You have to quit doing this.  smiley

This is a great forum.  I was upset at first that my brother posted  about my problems, but I'm thankful he did as I always want to know how others are doing when sick.  I feel bad that so many have added to this forum, but I really feel the love and prayers.  I tried to key this in on Thursday when I came home, but it was very difficult to make the left hand work on small motor skills.  Today I'm able to key the data a lot better, it is really wonderful  for what doctors can do.  Needless to say I'm very thankful for being alive, thankful for friends and family that gather around in time of need, and for all the prayers that I know I probably would not have been here, and believe me I've got a lot more to do on this earth.  I want to give a shout out to my wife who I have put through hell this last six months, I'm sorry and I love you more each day.  And one more to Elliot Hull, who passed away last April, thank you for keeping the back door to heaven open for me, but I'm not ready as yet and I plan to stay away from medical personel for a long time.  Merry Christmas to everyone!!!!!!!

Hi Vern and Eldon,

Just heard yesterday of your heart attack/stroke from my brother, Malcolm.  Very glad you are recovering swiftly, Eldon.  Follow the rehab suggestions.  You have too many good years in you to leave us prematurely.  Vern, Thank you for keeping us posted, The WHS community is a closeknit one, especially with a website as active as this one has been in recent months.  Those of us outside the Woodland area particularly appreciate this link.  Many of us would not have known of Eldon's health without your sharing.  Thanks again.  Don Gray

December 7, 1941 - Pearl Harbor Day, many men and women fought for our country.  Let us not forget those young people who lost their lives most were just teenagers, but some are still alive.  Going to Hawaii and seeing the sight was very, very touching, like it happened yesterday.  Blessings to all and thank you.

Craig,

Yes, flying a supersonic jet fighter is quite the job after college. I flew in the “Cold War” in Europe saving the world for capitalism for four years. Basic pilot training was one year ( flying a Cessna C-172, then a Cessna T-37 – the one on the stand at the Fliers Club - and then to the supersonic T-38 – which was a very fast plane ) followed by survival school and then on to the F-100 school for four months ( this is the same plane the Thunderbirds were flying at the time). You learn to be VERY smooth on the controls as both lead and wingman. WE flew close fingertip formation, low level routes, gunnery range, aerial re-fueling, shooting the Dart. We had nuclear alert in England, Italy and Turkey once a quarter along with gunnery ranges in England, Italy, Libya ( before Col Gaddafi ) and Spain. Twice a year we had semi-annual check rides and had to know every part of the “Dash One” 2” thick manual which covered every part of the F-100 – I still have the book. A good day of flying would be a low level flight in Scotland and then into Wales and finish up near Lands End in southern England or a low level flight into Northern France into Belgium and then hitting a tanker for aerial refueling and then a low level into Germany and the Netherlands before returning to Lakenheath. I usually just tell people about the 100 school teachers on base and the 20 nurses and trips to London, Wales and Scotland – much more fun. I have a lot of "War Stories" if you want to hear them.

Craig,

Yes, it is a great feeling knowing very few people will ever be able to do it. But, like everything else, you get used to it as an everyday occurance.

I did buy a Cessna 172 and commuted with it to Concord and San Jose for four years – 15 minute flights beat the 1-1/2 hour drives in good conditions. I never have had white knuckles.

Old car?? I still have the 1969 Jaguar XK-E I bought in England while stationed there. I had it up to 128 mph on the German Autobahn when a BIG Mercedes flashed his lights and passed me at about 150+ - makes you humble. I still follow Formula One races and went to Monaco four times for the Formula One races and went to the Jim Russell racing drivers school to drive Formula Ford and then bought one – a Lotus 51C - and raced for three years in England. Retirement is much slower now.

Eldon, so glad to hear that you are on the mend. Don't mess with heart attacks! When my cardiologiest saw me, I had about 90 minutes left. Since then (September 16, 2010), I have religiously done my rehab and my cardiologies now says that my heart has pretty much totally repaired itself.

About MSW, Bill Baldock was the leader along with Jerry Strubble, Ted Rossi, Craig Ehlers, and Dan Beeghley. The garage at Bill's house on Pendergast was the headquarters. It was a real old garage with a grease pit that at one point became a pool, lined with black plastic sheeting. Dian Dooley, Jane Elzy, Sue Osborn, Adele James and I were on the fringes. Jane used to pick up the radio broadcasts at her home.
