JoAnn Kergel (Wirth) (1965)

And the Zamora crew Marilee.  Up a couple of roads the Marchs, Masts, Hogglands.  I remember that long road to Marilyn & Carolyn's.  First house and then they built closer but on the same road.  Lots of us out there and by the time the school bus got to Yolo we were packed three to a seat.  We had the Zamora crew on our bus and since we attended Casheville I don't remember as many names.

Tom Stewart (1969)

JoAnn Kergel Wirth....I was fairly close friends with David, and I lived a street over from them.  I believe the Marions lived next door and the Townsends across the Street.  David, Francis Marion, Billy Townsend, Danny Logue, and a few others used to play football and baseball at Beamer Park or Beamer School.  The Gordons lived on Fourth and Mike Gordon (1969) often joined in.

Senor Craig - Icarus thought he was a moth, not a myth.

Tom, I remember your name coming up a time or two.  Tommy Wade lived behind Dan & David and the Marions and Townsends lived where you mentioned.  Bill & David were close and I knew him the best of David's friends.  He used to go deer hunting with the family and I tagged along a couple of times.  David & Billy were always "spying" on Dan & I to see if they could catch us kissing!

Janet Long (Levers) (1966)

Robert, I've got to take your bait: I took Latin for three years from Ad Hefner (whom I only learned to appreciate way too late); by the third year, I think there were 6 of us in class: Stan Heard, Ken Zobel, Maedell Fong, myself--feel bad about not remembering the others). Anyhow, that year we had to memorize poetry, so I never will forget:  "Daedalus interea Creten      longumque perosus; clausus erat pelago." IE, the story of Daedalus and Icarus imprisoned on Crete, and trying to get off the island.

Sorry all you folks working on neighborhoods; growing up in way-outer Zamora felt like Crete to a certain degree. But just to toss it back to you, JoAnn, etc. how about the Hatchers, down Rd. 15 from you, and the Richters, to the South? And Darrell and Gloria Gray on Rd. 14?

JoAnn.....I was good friends with Billy also.  We were on the same Babe Ruth team for a couple of years and actually won the championship.  It was at the time of the Babe Ruth World Series in Woodland.  You can see Billy in the front row center.

Janet Lavers – sorry you”took the bait” . . . I only make such stringers for Senor Criag.  I also took Latin from plebian Hefner. I unfortunately did not appreciate him as well but did get to play golf with  “Hef” a couple of months before he died. Nice fellow, and had a good sense of humor.

Senor Craig – Hay, I thought we would have the 60’s Barn dance at your place? What do you think . . . got room/stall?

Tom Stewart – I recognize in your baseball photo:

1. top row left to right :  a. ?       b. ?

2. Next row from top:  a.  Larry Stoven   b.  Bob Hawk   c.  Ken Scarlett  d. Dennis Salisbury   e. Lynn Wunder

3. 3rd row from top:  a. Rick Tucker b. ,?  c. clark Nardinelli d. Tom Steward.

4. Bottom row: a.  Bruce Nardinelli   b. Mark Tauzer   c.  Billy Townsend  d.  e.  ?

Levers-as in knobs, buttons and levers. I don't know where the 'moth' comes from re: the Icarus legend. The myth was that Daedalus used wax to attach bird feathers to his arms, and the wax melted when he got too close to the sun. I think Craig is referring to the Corn Ball in our barn on Rd. 20; a number of us-Bill Hatcher, Debbie Wetzel Bruno, John Gorman (and later Carol), Ron Timothy--put on a barn party for a number of years-- on the full moon of July. Our favorite band was Red Rose Ranch band--lots of Woodland guys. Also, the Class of '66 had their 40th class reunion here; photos were taken in a dead '66 Cadillac. That was the last of the barn parties.

Janet - "Levers" and not "Lavers" as which one may be taken to the cleaners . . . but of course!

Moth comes from "i"-"y" to "o", a little joke for Craig which I always like to do, if I can, when he presents the obvious.  Also, a waxed winged man flying too close to anything hot will have his wax melt . . . and so it goes for the poor "moth" who gets too close to the flame. There is also a Biblical reference too. Look it up if interested. From time to time, Craig often flies a little too high and encounters "severe heat" around here. :0)

"The Corn Ball" . . . hilarious. Jokes again on Craig. . . . sounds like it was a great time had by all. Nice memory.

As to your Latin sentence(s) . . . . you got me, but I will give it a try:

"Daedalus interea Creten         longumque perosusl  clausus erat pelago."

Daedalus of Crete dies or perishes.     (Chalk?) a long time of miserable confinement."

Well, how did I do ?   Not well I'm sure. Hef would surely say I play better at golf than at Latin.

Senor Craig . . . . “Et Tu? . . . Senor Bruto?" . . .

No, it goes like this, senor Craig . . . .  Brutus asks Ceasar . . .

“How many eggs did you have for breakfast?,   . . . Et Tu Bruti”

No such luck on the Report Card, never received an A+ for anything.

Senor Craig,  . . . yousa flying around lookin for a Barn that would fit the Bull?

Yep . . . bad golf, which is why I did not play in the Reunion Golf Tournament.

Oh, Janet Levers . . . . I meant to say, like levers as pulling your leg.

Omnia Gaulia en tres partes divisierunt. Veni, vidi, vici. (All misspelled, I'm sure.) I took two years of Latin and then made the mistake of changing to French in my Senior year. (Worst subject ever!) Was the teacher named Hefner? All I remember is that he had a very strong accent and was a very animated fellow.

Bill Means (1961)

Daedalus was the father of Icarus who used wax and feathers to fly and escape Crete where Daedalus was imprisoned by King Minos for some offense.

Well we know Icarus flew too close to the sun and the wax melted - you know the rest of the story.

You can't tell children to not do something and have them obey.

Who taught the Greek Literature class at WHS?

Military pilots have a society "Order of Daedalians" and a branch in Sacramento.

Hey Joeli -

I think your Latin quote is fron Julius Caesar, translated as best i can . . . .

"All Gual (France) look at these 3  differnet (?)   I come. I see, I conquer."  Are you trying to tell us something?

Senor Craig - Nice painting . . . a little racy? I don't remember that in WHS Latin class!

Willian Means - very interesting military history. Thanks for sharing.

There will also be a silent auction for a hand made WHS "one of a kind" double sided fleece blanket.  Tried to post it here but could not do it.  If you want to see it, email me (gmadee4@att.net) and I will be able to do it as an attachment.

If any questions or problems, email as above or phone:  530 662 2320.

Bill Means--hard for me to believe (remember) that there was a Greek Literature class, even in the classic days' of WHS in the '60's. But blessed Mr. (Ad) Hefner offered up a lot of opportunities in Latin classics. In my freshman year ('62-'63) we all took a bus to SF to the Orpheum Theatre to see (the highly risque vis a vis Liz Taylor/Richard Burton) Cleopatra. Anybody else out there go on that trip?

Marilyn Nicks (Hays) (1964)

Greetings WHS Classmates, I am amember of 1964 and have been reading some of the responses of late. It's actually been quite a while since I've been on.. But anyway, just want to add a few names to the Northside crew, mine beine one of them, and then there are the Diggs, Leonard, Kenny, Donelle, Harold, Pat, and Neva John Andrews (Butch), Barbara Jean Gibspn,, Emile Palmer, Lee Artchie,  Larry, Robert, Stanly and Marilyn Hicks, Brenda Earl (Jones-Smith)  I have to admit that a few f them were not from the 60's, but we were definitely at WHS!

Darlene Hooker (Kirch-Brown) (1965)

Another one block street in the north area and just south of Beamer, but filled with kids from WHS was Victory Way. Those who lived there were Darlene, David & LeRoy Hooker, Claude and Priscills Malcolm, Thompson family (can't remember names of the 3 kids), Linda Solomon & her brother, Ileen, Jeanine and Erin Means, Carol & John James, David, Gloria and Doug Matlock, and the Heanon family who owned Woodland Furniture.  I don't know if some of you remember the loud speaking system at the end of the football field during football games, but Larry Means was the one who provided that system for the games in the early days.  Also at the end of Victory Way on Grafton Street lived Bill and Paula Andersen.  I remember a bunch of us taking our teather ball to the street corner and hanging it on the street signs to play.  Also, going to Beamer Park at night and playing tennis under the lights.  Fun times.

David Stotts (1965)

Marilyn-Nice post on Beamer kids.  I was just up out of Susanville spending time with my buddy-Dale Metcalf and during our reminicing your brothers came up.  Stanley went to UCLA and became good buds with Kareem Abdul Jabbar-Is that correct?  I may be wrong on this but Dale's ties go back to Marysville-it seems like he tied the Nicks Family to Marysville during our conversation.  Is that correct or are my brain cells asleep?

Gail Smith (Maxwell) (1964)

I lived out on West Beamer, past where the new high school is today.  The houses were brand new when we moved in...now they are pretty old!  I remember having a long walk home from school since the high school was all the way on the other side of town.  Couldn't wait to get my license so I could drive to school.  I had a good friend, Barbara Johnson, who lived kiddy corner behind me but she left before high school and I don't remember if anyone else lived out there.
