Gail, I was north of you at West and Wisconsin during high school, and on Kentucky west of West St before that.

Darlene Hooker Kirsch...  I also lived on Grafton Street.  My great grandmother moved to Woodland in the late 1800s and she lived on the corner of Fourth and Grafton in that tiny white house.

Gail, you lived just a little passed me.  Living on 6 North McKinely I would also have to walk home, if Mother forgot to pick me up after school at the old Woodland High School, which was lovely.  I totally understand that long walk.  With a ton of books it was a workout for sure!!! Nice to hear where everyone was living.

Theresa Eve, Saw your posting and was wondering if you had or anyone else had a picture of the OLD CLARK FIELD?  In the 50's when they had semi pro games there we would bat boy for the teams and get the broken bats. Just a nail or 2 and a little tape and it was just as good as new for us kids. I have tried to find pictures of the Old CLARK FIELD but no luck.

Dale, yes, your memory is working on all counts.  Our family arrived in Marysville in the late 1800's and Stan did attend school with Kareem at UCLA.  He currently lives in the Bay area and Larry still lives in Marysville.

Doyle Phillips, I do not have any old pictures of the original Clarks Field myself.  But if you go online under, Clarks Field, Woodland, California.  There is an article from the Davis Enterprise, Clarks Field "the old girl is getting a faceleft", there is a picture of the old green stadium.  I could not copy it from the article.   There are a few other articles listed about who played and who visited, like Joe Di Maggio.  (I finally got the picture.)

Doyle, yes, I knew Herbie & all of the other classmates that lived on that side of town.  You might also remember Ericka and Mitchell Petty, Joan Taylor, Charlene, Butch & Gwen  Daigre, Lauradene Keith..   I'm not sure exactly where Butch is living.. Neva (Diggs) Brown probably knows.. they are cousins.

Gail Smith:  Didn't Sue Abbot live in your neighborhood?  I remember one day after school I had gone to her house.  I was so impressed.  Her bedroom closet was full of beautiful clothes and each one was in a plastic bag--like the type you get at the cleaners.  Does anyone know what happened to her?  Haven't seen her since high school.

Gail Smith (Maxwell) (1964)

Aileen  - you may be right about Susan Abbot but I really don't remember.  Now that I am thinking about it though, I do remember visiting someone who lived on the street before West Beamer (have no idea what the street name is).  I don't think she was a close friend or anything because if so, I probably would have remembered who it was!  Then again...the old brain isn't what it used to be!  I have no idea where Susan Abbott is...anyone out there know?

Teresa - my grandparents lived on Cleveland, just a couple blocks off of Main St. and I remember I used to walk there after school sometimes because it was shorter than walking all the way home!  Yes, you are right about the books and the trek...it was exhausting.  I thought Woodland was big then and now it is spread out even farther on all sides.  I remember when I first found out they were building the new high school out where I lived and all I could think was, "Darn, if only it had been there when I was in school!"

Theresa!  Sorry, I spelled your name wrong!

08/10/15 01:08 PM #2258

Theresa Eve (1964)

Gail:  No problem about my name, so many ways to spell it and it does not matter to me.  Some people call me Eve, never knowing if that is my first name or last - all first names!   Just great to hear from you and to read all the memories people have.  Our walk home was a big job, had to rest before I could do anything.  It did not get much better when I moved to Sacramento and worked for the State.  I took the bus into town for my job.  Parking was too expensive.  So more walking to the bus and waiting.  Always thought of those lucky people with a garage and an assigned parking, no worry about the weather or walking a long distance.  So retirement has some good points.  Still like your Mother's story of her hard work at the Hotel Woodland Office.  Very interessting.

Mary Ann Montoya (Newman) (1962)

Doyle Phillips -  just read your messages to some of our class mates.  Are you still living in woodland. I also heard from Donna (Hill) Spencer stating that you wanted Jim Springers phone number.  I have it , but will have to ck with Jim before I can give it out.  I'm on facebook, you can message me there.   High School is nothing to what our grandchildren are going through.  We didn't have much but we sure had fun and enjoyed every bit of it.  We  had no cell phones, no out of state trips for graduation,   no painted hair, in addition no back packs, we had lockers, and  the list goes on....   I'm still waiting for the Golden Years,  while I take one day at a time.  For some excitement.. Kara Danielson and I go  to the casino to use our ATM machine (lol).   Enjoy your day.

Mary Ann (montoya) Newman

We got this email today. Can anyone answer this?

Let me know and I will pass the information on to her.

Sandra Humphrey (Smith) (1964)

Hi Gail,

I lived at 173 Buckeye Street - almost to Cottonwood.  We built and moved into our house Feb 1958.  Although I was born in Woodland, my family moved to Santa Cruz when I was 2 and later moved back when I was in 6th grade (one year at Beamer). Not sure if you remember, but I used go over to your house - probably in Jr High School.  Susan Abbott lived at the other end of Buckeye Street.  I've often wondered what happened to her.  I don't believe she's attended any reunions and haven't seen any info on her.  I remember her mother was a nurse, and yes, she had a really pretty house and equally pretty clothes!!  I always drive down Buckeye Street when I come to town (my brother still lives in Woodland).  Always stop in front of my old family house for a few minutes just to reflect on good memories.  Mom lived there until her passing in 2008.  Others living on Buckeye St included Cheryl Whitfield, Elmer Krug, and Sherrie Gessler.  Barbara Johnson lived on Antelope St.  I actually got her email a few yrs ago and corresponded with her for a while.  I believe she and her family moved to Oregon when she left Woodland.  Pretty sure she lives in Southern California now.

The walk to high school was a long one. Sometimes would catch the school bus that picked up kids living outside Woodland.  It stopped close to Orrick's Gas Station.  I finally got to drive to school when I got a 1954 Buick as a graduation present from my parents.  My car was B I G and very green!!  Sort of like a tank!

This is the first year in quite a while I haven't flown back to Woodland for a visit.  Hope to next year.  Great seeing so many last year at our 50th reunion.

Sarah Humphrey Smith....my wife also grew up on Buckeye and they were the Martins...Diane, Alfred and Carol.   They lived next door to the Becks and across the street from the Carters.  All of these families had grads in the 60s.

Sandra Humphrey Smith - It does ring some bells that you used to come over to my house!  Wow, Buckeye was a popular street...lots of students living there.  Barbara and I were kiddy corner to each other and rigged up a step on each side of our fences so we could get into each other's yards.  She moved up to Portland, OR when we were 12 or 13.  I rode the Daylight Express up there with her (just the two of us...we thought we were so cool sitting in the club car drinking cokes) when she moved, while her mother drove up.  I lost touch with her but then probably 40 years ago, somehow I found her in Anaheim.  We were down there on vacation or something and looked her up.  We spent a lovely evening with her and her husband playing bridge and catching up.

Ruth Wechsler Willey - I was hoping you would be at the 50th reunion...missed seeing you.  I love to tell stories about you and how you would roll your skirt up at the waist until you would spot Queenie in the hallways and then quickly unroll it so it was the "proper" length.  You were so daring and we all loved it! After seeing Barbara all those years ago, we lost touch again so I have no idea if she is still down there.  I don't remember her last name or anything.  Are you still in Woodland???

Ruth Wechsler, where have you been?? Have looked for you at all the reunions and have yet to see you

I always thought you were the coolest girl in our class. I remember when we were at songleading practice, you took me under the bleachers and showed me how to smoke. Hope all is well with you and your family.

Craig-yes indeed Dale is in the WHS Hall of Fame.  Enjoyed playing baseball and basketball with him.  I brought him up to Chico after he got out of the service.  He was Chico State's head baseball coach for about 10 years and was my best man when I got married.

I need to correct myself on Dale's Hall of Fame.  I beleive it's the Woodland Sports Hall of Fame-not WHS Hall of Fame.

Thank you all from the class of 65 for making the deadline to attend the 50th class reunion on Sept 12 at the Woodland Hotel from 5-10.  We have a great group (so far) to make this a wonderful celebration.  For those that still want to attend, you can do so but it will cost you $50 now.  The absolute deadline for reservations is SEPTERMBER 1.    NO ADMISSION THE NIGHT OF THE REUNION.  So to those that are attending, we will see you soon!
